Computer furniture

Aaargh. Okay this place is totally out of control, I have gear jammed everywhere and this place is just a mess. Does anyone know of a decent line of computer furniture that can handle a more or less industrial sized pile of gear? I'm looking for something modular that makes extremely good use of limited space.

and is rock solid too
the scanners are large and so are the printers
and the turntable would appreciate a solid base too
and did I mention the room is about the size of a walk in closet...

So are you thinking some kind of equipment rack? Multi-tiered desk?

We've used Blackbox and Wrightline for that kind of stuff. I prefer the Wrightline stuff but I'm not paying. :D

First that comes to mind is Anthro (http://www.anthro.com/). They do the "pile of gear" and industrial thing well. I'm too cheap to pay their prices though.

I've used these guys over the years and they do a good job. I've gotten Freedom and Neutral Posture chairs from them and customer service was great. Office Organix (http://www.officeorganix.com/)

If you have a dealer in your area that is reasonable and creative you can save a lot by using multiple vendors. I got an Idea@Work (http://www.idea-at-work.com/) elevating L shaped base and had St. Johns fabricate the counter top and provide bookshelves and back counter. I used Great Openings file and drawer pedestals on wheels, a Humanscale 5G keyboard arm w/ 27" tray (http://www.humanscale.com/products/keyboard_systems.cfm?detail=build&subdetail=mechanism) and a Chief KCB110 articulating monitor arm. Total cost was less than half what I would have spent by going to a single source like Anthro.

I was able to tame my mountain of gear and the sit/stand function and ability to quickly alter keyboard and monitor positions leaves me feeling better after long days.

OC beat me to Ikea. They do build some things that last (and yes, some that don't!). But nobody really gets space management like they do.

My desk at home is a '50's era Steelcase that we bought at a surplus sale for $25. It will be around long after life on this planet as we know it has ceased.

Steelcase is great stuff.
I have a particular weakness for GF and Art Metal. GF was IMHO even higher quality than Steelcase, if that's possible, with some fantastic design. It's what the roaches will be blogging on after the apocalypse.

You should probably check around for some slightly used furniture. There is an increasing amount of empty office space out there and the Steelcase stuff that used to be in it is on the market.

Every university has an outlet where they blow out used stuff when they decide to waste money on new stuff. You might pick up some nice stuff there. If it does'nt fit exactly, pick up a Sawzall on the way home and Gomer it :gomer:

If you are willing to dumpster dive, I've seen some nice stuff out there. Especially around the end of the school year. Not that I am encouraging any violations of local laws. ;)

Seconded. It's grim, but with the number of companies failing these days, there are some steals out there. I just picked through the remnants of one of Circuit City's HQ buildings last week. Ended up with a truck bed full of file cabinets, a couple of nice desk chairs and enough office supplies to keep The Missus' classroom rolling the rest of the year for less than $100.

As an aside, it's particularly startling (and quite depressing) to go through an office building like this where holiday decorations were still up, meeting notes still on whiteboards and some personal effects still on desks...
