This needed it's own thread. It just wasn't right having this discussion in an IRL section.
I went with the Porsche 917 (Le Mans version), but I'll give special consideration to what Matra was producing. One of those sounds where you fear for your vital organs. All of them!

No, that F-1 Matra in the '71 Questor Grand Prix at Ontario, maybe.:)

Ferrari V-12. Pick one. And not the 575M. :D
I'll pick this Ferrari V12

Some others to start with...

I've got some BRM V16 sound clips downloaded and that is the sexiest sound I've ever heard from an engine. The big Ferrari V12s for the Can Am almost rival that. The 3.0l Cossies make the list because they were just this side of being nasty. ;)

I've set the bar pretty high and I'd like to see any of you top it.

Cosworth DFV standing start (http://www.billzilla.org/F1-offstartline.mp3)
Out of all the Cosworths the F1 DFV is the clear standard. :D

I got to see that monster at Goodwood - I was staggering around Friday morning trying to shake off the jet lag, and started watching the guy working on the BRM. As I started to move to the next car, he squinted at me and aimed his screwdriver at me and like some sort of crazed Harry Potter character and insisted, "I wouldn't walk away if I were you! When I start this engine, you shall hear a sound that you will not soon forget!" Then he went back to the engine like I wasn't even there.
Anyway, I hung around. That V-16 did clear out my jet lag, I have to admit!

Hey, it's no coincidence that many of the pre and post war race cars sounded like fighter planes.
I would have to say that BRM sound ranks highest for me on the "involuntary smile" scale.
It just sounds so freaking insane. :D

Ok I admit, that Cosworth DFV did top the Champ Car. Very nice sound.

Paul Page really wasn't bad...oh and I do admit to liking the Hanford races (unlike the IRL you might have gone side by side, but you had the momentum to carry it through).

Before they were banned, I watched 4 of these run nose to tail while trouncing the GT2 (and much of the GT1) field at Sears Point. Great sound but really f'n loud.

I have no idea if this will work - but this is some video I shot with my digital camera. I always liked the audio on it.
It is pit exit at Cleveland. Nice tire chirp as the car pulls out - then look for PT (as I recall) downshifting and lighting up a tire into T1.

Just saw this episode on top gear the other night. That was an amazing lap, looked even faster than it was. A Caterham tops the Bugatti Veyron? Oh my.

This one is in the pits. Sound isn't ideal, but not bad for a 40yr old water pump engine...:D
