so I'm mowing the yard yesterday afternoon, daydreaming, and I'm thinking about Porsche 917 at Le Mans--the longtail version in particular. I'm regretting never had the chance to see one truly raced in anger, and thinking how cool it would be to see one at Road America. I'm thinking to myself that it sure would be neat if they could run a bunch of the old Le Mans cars at the BRIC so it would be almost as much fun as watching the originals.
Then I'm asking myself, what would be really cool is if you could have an actual race using the old rules (updated for safety) with the five liter limitation, tube or monocoque frame, etc... It'd be sort of like 1970 vintage Can Am and Steve McQueen at the same time...
Like I said, just daydreaming...

I contend that's kind of what the Daytona Mafia has done with the crapotypes, except they are fugly. Currently I'm engaged on a discussion of this sort at Smack (where my avie is a Porsche 917 which I enjoy seeing here in Seattle when it comes to our main vintage event).
In my opinion, they sound a lot like old CanAm and F5000 cars, and have the longer braking distances, lower downforce, and more tail-happy power to grip ratio of the late 60's/early 70's prototypes, which leads to more interesting racing.

which would explain all those overwhelmingly popular porn flicks with the incredibly homely-ass women in them.
:D
I used to daydream about the early LMP 675 cars running 6.0L OHV or 4.5L DOHC units based on production blocks and heads. That would have been less constrained than the crapotype rules.

Yep, and without the bad juju that the Daytona dopes bring to the party.

Mine was street bodied cars (with homologation numbers in the hundreds, if not thousands) with a prototype chassis. Kind of a Speed GT skinned car with a GTP chassis/engine. Kind of where DTM was in the mid-90's, but wilder...:\

Yes, they need to do something about the looks to really have something there, but they probably won't.

Now, if they went with a "Daytona Spyder" class designed as a support series--same car with no glasshouse for "sprint" races on Saturday, they might have something...

That's a tool that will never be the same after the "interesting commercial" thread. I almost laughed out loud when I walked past some at Home Depot the other day.

Not for us - one look at that contraption and my wife would give me her best, "Yeah, after you, mate."

Although I drive a spyder, I've never been a fan of them for sports prototypes, with the exception of the Kremer 962.

Really? You mean when the GTP's disappeared and the 333SP's took their place, you didn't feel any loss?
Every time ACO says P1 will be closed top I get excited, and every time they back down, I get bummed.
Spoiled by those darn 917's as a kid!

Spyders are sprinters, closed top are Endurance. Trying to make somebody choose between the Can-Am and Le Mans cars of old is futile. It's as pointless as the eternal debate about whether it's better to be injected or blown.

Well, I can see your point. I appreciate that there are rules that promote diversity of vehicles. I appreciate that there are rules that promote diversity of engines. I whole heartedly disagree with the way in which that is done. You shouldn't force the chassis manufacturers to buy a right to produce a chassis, anybody should be able to build their chassis to the regulations.
Apart from the fact that they're uglier than a rose tattooed on an 89 year old's bosom, they're halfway to setting regulations in the spirit of motorsport traditions. If they'd just publish the rules to allow anybody to make a chassis and change the rules so that they're not so f***ing hideous, NASCAR would actually have a good product :O

Were those great 2:45 GTP races sprint or endurance? Loved seeing the GTP's there. LeMans is certainly endurance, and it has always had Spyders in it.
What is the connection between configuration and race length?
Agreed that each have their fan base. That great GTP/Group C thread (was that here or CW?) certainly indicated a lot of folks missed the closed tops.
I like seeing them both in the same race, so I can root for the closed tops against the open tops! :D

It was on CW. I also like seeing both race against each other. Competing solutions to the same problem is what it's all about.
