The setting for the .1RL's long awaited season opener has finally been revealed and never before have I seen so many 90 degree corners on a circuit outside of the old Houston circuit. And seriously, how many tracks have a pitlane that isn't even remotely close to the start/finish line?

"There are some good 90-degree turns at the end of the straights, and on one occasion a little tighter than that."
This is from the actual press release. I love how they have to try and justify the abundance of 90 degree corners.
The hairpin following a 9/10s mile straight should do wonders for attrition
It should be a spectacular sight for the fans at Turn 11 watching the cars braking from about 185 mph to 50 mph as they enter the Sambodromo.
Or not.
No way they make it to Day 2 without a chicane being installed.

All the yawns of the Phoenix F1 circuit but without the exotic cars. Hope they have a quarter mile or so runoff for that hairpin, a real big airbag, or a giant catchers mitt. :gomer:

I wonder if they installed a jump over railroad tracks to make it that much better.

Wow. We were all right back in 1996 when the IRL started when we said that in 15 years, there would be only one series, Tony George would not be in charge, the first race of the season will be a temp-street circuit in Brasil, and most of the drivers would not be Americans.

I went through a corn maze last fall with more interesting corners than that track.

shows a chicane
Shows a lot more than that, it also shows what looks to be terrible pavement, a run down area of town, and some incredibly narrow on and off ramps as part of the course. That chicane on the main strait seems to be pulling in and out of the same driveway. Looks like it might make the long beach U-turn seem open. I wonder if they tested if the crapwagons can turn that tight. Or are we going to see 3 point turns are part of the race?

Who is going to cough up the cash to make that place race ready? Terrible pavement is a polite understatement. It barely looks drivable, let along race-worthy. :saywhat:
I saw nothing - Nothing - that would make me want to see a race there. It will look like an race being held on "The Day After".

Just a few highlights of this exotic locale. Its really amazing how hard the suspension on that SUV has to work to get out of that parking lot.

Buzz on the street

Action items are added and checked off Tony Cotman's clipboard almost hourly as construction of the 2.6-mile, 11-turn São Paulo temporary street course in Brazil's largest city is a 24/7 operation.
The inaugural São Paulo Indy 300 - the opening race of the IZOD IndyCar Series season -- is six weeks off so there's plenty to accomplish. Ongoing is the milling and paving of streets, replacing curbing, relocating trees, erecting grandstand suites, manufacturing equipment such as pit lane fuel storage tanks and much more daily - all in the Anhembi (north-central) section of the bustling city with 7 million vehicles on its arteries.
Cotman, who designed the course and is overseeing its construction through his new company, NZR Consulting, said the venue "never looks the same any two days in a row. The site work continues at a torrid pace," he added. "The city has been incredible and is putting in a huge effort in contributing to a successful event. There are not too many other places in the world that are willing to provide this much manpower, or can make changes or improvements at such an incredible pace."
Promotion of the first IZOD IndyCar Series race in South America also is well under way with multimedia ad placements through Bandeirantes (TV, radio, newspapers) and signage in more than 1,500 Ipiranga Petroleum service stations among other places in the state and throughout the country. A show car has been on display at the Anhembi Convention Center since December. Last week, more than 100,000 people attended the 1,500-exhibitor Couromoda International Trade Fair (trends in the sporting goods, leather and shoe industries) at the convention center. More than 12,000 travel agents from across Brazil will attend the CVC Travel Trade Show on Feb. 4. Tickets for the São Paulo Indy 300 go on sale Feb. 1 at www.saopauloindy300.com.br or www.livepass.com.br
Wonder if they can outdraw the trade fair? Looks like seating for about 750,000! And a 30 car field!
