vhs to dvd and/or computer

need some hardware to get this process completed. don't care if it burns dvds or not, would prefer it on my comp. have tons of old race videos and personal vids i'd like to convert before they implode like a mission impossible tape.

anyone have anything they can suggest? also i have a mac, any free/shareware apps? thanks.

I have an older version Convetx by Plextor that worked fne, athough I have no idea if it will work now that I've upgraded to Win 7/64 bit. Here's their newer version (http://www.plextoramericas.com/index.php/digital-video-converter).

I tried the Dazzle thing and it worked ok. Since then we've gotten a VHS to DVD recorder and I like the results a lot better. You can rip the DVD to your computer once you've copied it from VHS. Lots of options for <$200.

The Boss nailed it. I have a Panny VCR-DVD and it works fine. The only advice I can give is to make sure you 'finalise' the disk so you can play it on a PC or another DVD player. Guess who didn't do it on the first DVD copied? :o

If you have a Macintosh take a look at the EyeTV.
Excellent hardware encoding and good editing software to go with it.

Here is what I did:

Bought a DVD recorder, hooked the VCR to it and transferred the video from VHS to DVD.

As mentioned before, make sure you finalize the disk before use in another equipment.

Now I use the dvd recorder to record directly from cable fee.

I've been seeing that the VCR/DVD combos work well with home-recordedVHS tapes, but they won't copy your purchased movies onto DVD.

That sound like BS, so it must be true.

I was looking at a crap Magnavox one, just to get old kid's tapes onto disc.

I use a Sony DVD/VCR combo to dupe stuff back and forth. I also have a Sony standalone DVD recorder to copy HI 8 tapes to DVD. Using DVD-R blanks and finalizing them they seem to play in anything. Nero Recode works great for quick format translation and editing of videos. BTW, SPEED is copy protected and you can't record off the air with a standalone DVD recorder unless you use something like this

SPEED and channel next to it are the only ones blocked on my cable system. Everything else records fine.
