Slightly related to the topic: reading The Guardian's live commentary feed from ENG-GER tipped me off to a book entitled "Send Them Victorious: England's Path to Glory 2006-2010." Picked up a copy on Amazon last night and will read it straightaway when it arrives. Will post reviews/excerpts for LOLs.
A little preview, from a match report written for a prior England-Germany tilt:
It is no exaggeration, but rather an imaginative simile, to compare this game to World War II -- World War II, that is, minus the participation of Churchill, Field Marshall Montgomery, Adolf Hitler, Herman Goering, and Douglas Bader, who like our own Frank Lampard, suffered from the handicap of not being able to use his legs in any effective way.

..and in other news OBL released a statement saying "The Infidel English soccer team's display this weekend was pathetic and weak"...British Intelligence Services dismissed the authenticity of the message commenting that it could have been written at any time during the last 44 years...
British Intelligence Services
Isn't that an oxymoron? :gomer: :p ;)

The FA announced today that they were launching simultaneous investigations into how an irate fan made it into the England locker room, and how Aaron Lenon made it out of the England locker room..
We are, however, still kicking the brown stuff out of the Aussies at cricket which takes some of the sting out of this weekend's shenanigans..
Not just the cricket...

Looks like Gerrard is about to be exposed as "worse than John Terry"

and we will forever have an excuse for England's WC2010.

the routing of Terry was the first attempt at finding an excuse why England didnt win the world cup.
the sunday tabloids will be choc-a-bloc of news no doubt

Come on -- Terry is trash, apparently Gerrard is too. Surely they can come up with 23 non-dirtbags for Euro 2012 qualifying so the country can just watch the games instead of the tabloids.

Holland!
P.S. It would have been 5-1 if The Netherlands had any idea what to do with the ball on a breakaway. They were alone in front of goal so many times.

Upon further review the FA has determined that the irate England fan did not in fact break into the locker room, he was let in by Rob Green..

Except at least Gerrard was trying, Terry looked as if he just simply couldn't be bothered..

Final thoughts: The Ghanaians are gutted, predictably. Gyan, who missed that penalty in extra-time, is distrought. I quite wanted Uruguay to win, to be honest, but in these circumstances? They have cheated their way to victory. Within the rules of the game we all love, but cheating all the same.
Even more final thought: Boooooooooooooo!
Absolutely final thought: But, at the same time, grudging respect to the cheating little sods. It takes a real streak of evil to win like this.
dirty pool.
Uruguay was the one non-diving conmebol team this cup I had loads of respect for

Germany played phenomenally well today, but Spain will provide a much more disciplined challenge..All Euro final anyone?

Maybe they should spend less time practicing diving and more on practicing soccer. :)

I really though a South American team was going to win the WC. I know Uruguay is still alive, I didn't think it would be them. Maybe it's less about hemisphere and more about time zones.

How do they determine who is the home side for the final? If Spain wins and is home, as gorgeous as their kits are, we will be robbed of the Oranje in the final...
A 1-0 rout. The German counter attack was just shut down. Here's hoping the Tang's have a shot and can make it a good match.

So today I go down to the Port of Cleveland to look at the tall ships which are in port this weekend and one of the ships is from the Netherlands. I just happen to get on board right when some American they have on board is finishing setting up a tv on the deck and setting it to the proper local American channel so they could watch the consolation game. I am so tempted to by a ticket to the event tomorrow and go on board their ship and watch with them.
would be a great atmosphere to watch

This is probably a good thing or he'd wind up fried, on someone's plate. TravelGuy says Paul is getting requests to predict the outcome of elections. In the Middle East.
I'm glad Spain won but jeeeez, what a mess.
Now that the tomfoolery is over, let the truth be spoken.
Hank Hill: Bobby, I didn't think I'd ever need to tell you this, but I would be a bad parent if I didn't. Soccer was invented by European ladies to keep them busy while their husbands did the cooking.
Bobby Hill: Why do you hate what you don't understand?
Hank Hill: I don't hate you Bobby!
Bobby Hill: I was talking about soccer.
Hank Hill: Oh yeah, I hate soccer.
