Sorry if this is a duplicate thread but it seems to me like we need something similar to the You Tube thread for books. I just finished "Lotus-The Indianapolis Years" and it was excellent. I'm glad I never worked for Colin Chapman...

Graham Hill's autobiography is a good read. I would recommend that as a great way to get in touch with racing in the 60's.

Likewise, Niki Lauda put out a book, "A New Formula One, The Turbo Age." Some rather sobering comments about the magical era when full on turbo power met ground effects. Scary stuff.

The Limit
Michael Cannell

Covers the story of road racing during the 1940s & 1950s.
Starring American and Californian Phil Hill.

Got a good write up in the Wall Street Journal, although, I don't agree with the reviewer's conclusion.

Not sure if I'd have wanted to drive for him either. Innovative cars but questionable integrity.

Many funny anecdotes from Grand Prix mechanics.

The Toolbox book looks interesting. This is the first I've heard of it. Behind the scenes stuff is usually interesting.

One of the greatest books I ever read, Perry McCarthy could have been a stand up comic had he not been a race car driver. The Andrea Moda team is outright comedy as well. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Anything by Chris Nixon is highly cool.
Even though they're heavy on the photos and light on the text, these two are spectacular:
