I'm sure it is with the economy sinking fast. Costco's penetration is still not as broad. We have ~4 Sam's in central oHIo and one Costco. For me to go to Costco would involve driving ~10 miles to a megaplex that is constantly congested. :thumdown:

I'd love to see a similar visualization of buildings abandoned by Wal-Mart when they build new stores a mile or two away from existing stores. I can think of at least 4 around here.

3 BJs Wholesale Clubs a couple of Sam's, but no Costco. There is one in St. Catharines, ON; but I am not driving to Canuckistan to buy my toilet paper.

Salt Lake City has 3rd West a street that used to be small industrial companies of all manner. Then it got a Home Depot. That was it for a while. The the box explosion occurred. Most of the small industrial is gone and in the space of 10 blocks there are:
RC Willeys
Best Buy
Office Depot
Sam's Club
Costco
Lowes
Super Walmart
Super Target
Ashley Furniture
Pets Mart
Five mini malls full of the usual suspects

And an assortment of surviving local companies.
MacBeath Hardwoods
Industrial Supply
The Tool Shop
Utah State Wine Store
Utah Beers brewery
Granato's Import Company & Deli

And they are building more all the time. Essentially without any city planning:rolleyes: or support:saywhat: every major retailer has decided to focus on one section of one road. It'd be nice if the city/county ponied up and paved it:shakehead

In all the years I've followed city + county government, I don't ever recall an incident where a private party wanted to pave a public street and the gubmint stood in their way, except when that private party wanted someone else (that would be you, the taxpayer) to foot the bill.
