View Full Version : The Earl

Something regarding the earl that someone shared with me.

Has anyone ever noticed the lack of conformity in the way the IRL assigns
distance numbers to the title of its events?

Tonights Bombardier 500 at TEXAS is only 300 miles. Why would you measure it
in kilometers in a country that doesn't use the metric system, and when for
other races in the contnental US you do measure properly in miles?

Nazareth Indy 225 is only 200 miles. The IRL lists Nazareth as 1.0 miles,
even though I know CART used to measure it as under a mile. So I can't
imagine the IRL finding it to be over a mile, but who knows, maybe they have
a "special" ruler.

The Chevy 500 is only 300 miles.

Also interesting to note the only race they don't even assign a number to is
the Richmond event, because SunTrust Indy Challenge 187.5 doesn't sound
good.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Firestone Indy 200 at Nashville is
actually 266 miles. They don't give themselves credit there.

In all my years of watching racing, I've always understood the reason you
list a race in kilometers is out of respect to the host nation, since we're
the only country in the world not on the metric system. Yet, Motegi, the
IRL's only overseas event, is recorded in miles!!! The Indy Japan 300 is
indeed a 300 miler. Disrespect to the host nation!

To be fair and balanced, I looked at how CART assigns its numbers. Although
the trend has been to not use them anymore, where they do, it is in the host
nations measurement system and it is accurate.

Surfers Paradise gets the respect of kilometers.

Even CART's German 500, is 2.023 miles X 154 laps = 311.542 miles = 501.378
KILOMETERS

How dumb does the IRL think racefans are, or do they think Texas is a
foreign country?

I think we've soundly established that point! ;)

What is even more misleading about the title is the assumption that any Chevy would complete 300 miles.

Straying off topic...

Actually, many Texans believe that they are an Independent Republic, because Texas never was constitutionally recognized and accepted as a State of the Union. You can look it up.

Number one

Lizzerd is dead on, I've been down here (Texas) for two days and have seen it first hand. But on the other hand, the weather is great and the beer is cheap.

Number two

Does anybody really sit around and ponder race distances against promotional broucher numbers?

What about when CART throws down the timed race rule or decides to run the whole event under the caution?

"many texans?" Lets clear that up and say that about 15 ppl, who by the way are now under federal arrest, in addition to you and Railbird actually buy that :)

as for "consitutionally recognized," whateever that means... the beef of those freaky militia guys was that the texas constitution never allowed annexation, not the US constitution, ;)

now if it wasn't for texas teams, the rest of the US wouldn't have a championship competition half the time :D

Damn Bif...... You are a really tempting proposition and all with you being the smartest man in these here parts and all, but after spending the night with TINY George and all, I think I will have to decline and rub elbows with the racing genious himself. He is open wheel racing's saviour and all........ Proof, LOL (http://www.offcamber.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1558)

I never (ever!) thought that I'd say this, but if Texas wasn't part of the Union about three years ago, I feel that the world would now be a better place. Well, at least my father and I have found a politcal point that we can agree on... and just in time for Father's Day. :)

Tony George would never have another race at 500 miles.

That would besmirch the IRL 500.

It's all about Indy....

On the other hand, he would whore the numbers just to make a pathetic link to a once fabled event.

Awww Railbird. You silly feller. I know the race names (from Toronto and weaned from mother on the Molson Indy), but in my old age ;) I don't get the joke/statement. I admit it.:shakehead
