Seriously folks. The topic is the oil leak in the gulf. If there's nothing else to say about it we can close the thread.

No need to close it. We're just havin' some fun. At least I am. ;)

Scratch that off my possible vacation destinations for the year.

More seriously the last few years I have thought of going to New England in the fall and I really wanted to do it this year, but now am wondering, by fall would it be up there?

So sad. My cousin lives in Pensacola, and on Monday she posted photos on FB of entire schools of stingrays swimming along the shore in knee deep water.

Doubtful. The Gulf Stream doesn't go that far north (towards the US NE coast). Besides, you wouldn't want to be swimming in sub-70 water in the NE fall.

The models I've seen put it as a near zero possibility it will reach the Jersey Shore this summer. NC maybe. Should blow out to sea and next make landfall in, you guessed it, Britain.

Ouch. US District Judge Martin Feldman just hammered the Interior Department's ban on all off shore drilling at depths greater than 500 feet. He wrote a rather scathing decision:

Correct. The Gulf Stream heads NE toward GB beyond the outer banks. Hence why the water temps are usually ~70 when we are in OCNJ in July/August. Headed there early there this year (7/10-7/24), so I'm sure it'll be a bit brisk in the water. :saywhat:

you have thousands of wells in the gulf, and you unilaterally shut them all down for one incident where the signs point to lack of adherence to procedure, not technological infeasibility.

not to mention moaning and groaning of loss of jobs from spill, but then go ahead and shut down the rest of the economic activity that remains as well.

liked Salazar alot in Colorado, but the ban reeks of political jockeying, and not his forte which is bridging the gap between industry & conservation instead of letting it get tangled in courts for years on end

By the way, just to show how BP operates, the order stopping off shore drilling has stopped everyone in the Artic (my understanding is that despite the order other oil companies are going to wait until it is finally resolved) but not BP.

They simply dumped a pile of gravel into the ocean 3 miles off shore and have claimed that the resulting artificial island is on shore (which the gov. is allowing), even though it is just as dangerous to operate from as a floating rig. I actually agree with the Judge. Shutting down an entire segment of the energy economy because of BP's stupidity is not a viable response. Like the Judge said, "The Court recognizes that the compliance of the thirty-three affected rigs with current government regulations may be irrelevant if the regulations are insufficient or if MMS, the government’s own agent, itself is suspected of being corrupt or incompetent. Nonetheless, the Secretary’s determination that a six-month moratorium on issuance of new permits and on drilling by the thirty-three rigs is necessary does not seem to be fact-specific and refuses to take into measure the safety records of those others in the Gulf."

Speaking of pollution (nice segue right?) how is it that BP gets to hire a private army and local police officials to ban video and photography of the dead animals and the soiled beaches?

BP has come under heavy fire from Congress and environmental groups for its lack of readiness to handle a worst-case spill. But that criticism has overlooked a key fact: BP was required by federal regulators to base its preparations on Interior Department models that were last updated in 2004.

Eddy Franklin. Gotta love the name. From 6/24 agent briefing. Does anyone know more about how they managed to pinch the Loop Current?

NOAA Suspends Oil Forecasts
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has suspended daily production of offshore Transocean/BP oil spill trajectory maps because a change in ocean currents has minimized impact risks to the Florida Keys and most of the Florida peninsula.

The northern end of the Loop Current has been pinched off into a large clockwise eddy called Eddy Franklin. This means there is no clear path for spilled oil to enter the Loop Current from the spill source in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf Loop Current is a clockwise current that normally carries water from the Yucatan Channel north into the Gulf of Mexico, then back down south off Florida's west coast, past the Dry Tortugas and into the Gulf Stream. NOAA will resume plans to resume production of offshore spill trajectory maps if needed.

You're not just sayin' that although the monster is the oil that SANK. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to figure out how devastating a layer of goo across the ocean floor could be. This is not going to be "over" for a long, long time.

From what last week's Frontline documented BP was trying to cut costs by 15-20% since acquiring Amoco and that infiltrated every operational decision leading to the Texas City refinery explosion (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/the-spill/bp-troubled-past/#2), arctic pipeline burst (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/the-spill/bp-troubled-past/#3), Thunder Horse capsize (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/the-spill/bp-troubled-past/#4) and their latest little cockup (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/the-spill/bp-troubled-past/#5).
