Open wheel racing continues to over promise and under deliver.
Remind me again why we give a ****?
Because on the increasingly rare occasions when they don't totally **** things up it can be oh so very good.

Motorsports for me is currently like an abusive boyfriend. I keep thinking of all the nice things that happened 10+ years ago, but if I'm honest with myself I'm just tired of being knocked down, lied to, ignored, and taken for granted.
Some day I'll break out of this cycle.:\
But then again, maybe it could change, and go back to what it was before...
I reckon Texas was gone the moment Jersey was announced. If Jersey gets canned, it will be back on again.

If Jersey gets canned it will be too late for Austin.
from may 2010, good call
except in this case it wasn't the Bernie fee, it was the original promotor wanting to get bought out and peace out. his leverage was brought to nil when the state comptroller issued the letter stating that the $25M could go to the the original promotor, Tavo, or the circuit, whomever.

Overnight British newspapers reported there will be no Austin Formula 1 race in 2012. According to The Independent, F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone cited a lack of progress on track construction as the reason for that cancellation. The Independent reports Ecclestone has offered a new 10 year contract for Formula 1 racing in Austin, to begin in 2013.
"The [new] contract we proposed to them is 10 years from 2013," Ecclestone is quoted as saying. "We said we would wait for them."
It's unclear who the contract was offered to, Tavo Hellmund and his promotion company Full Throttle Productions, or the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) racetrack. As detailed earlier, a rift between these two F1 partners appears to have killed the 2012 race.
Ecclestone's suggestion that the track will not be ready flies in the face of statements from COTA President Steve Sexton and co-founder Bobby Epstein just two days ago. They insist the money is in place and construction is on schedule. At least for now. Construction was halted on Tuesday because of the uncertainty of an F1 contract.
So next move is cancelling the contract w/ Tavo yesterday and now offering new bid w/ new year for Epstein's capital group.
No way Bernie comes back down to $25M. So depends what the new negotiated fee is, and how that annual excess above $25M works into their financial model I guess.
The Austin GP website's URL now points to the offical F1 site.

guess it's back on. for now...
The international Formula One racing calendar is set, and the inaugural United States Grand Prix is scheduled to be run in Austin on Nov. 18, 2012.
In an email to the American-Statesman, F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone confirmed a deal had been reached with Circuit of the Americas investors.
“Yes there will be a race there,” he said. “We hope it will be for 10 years.”
Circuit officials said they reached an agreement with Ecclestone just hours before the World Motor Sports Council, meeting today in New Delhi, ratified the final 2012 F1 racing calendar.
Ecclestone had said this meeting in India would be the firm deadline for striking a deal with the track to host the Grand Prix next year.
“Mr. Ecclestone received his check today for the USGP. We want to thank the fans supporting us, the local officials and businesses that have encouraged us, the state of Texas, Circuit of The Americas’ staff and Bernie himself,” Red McCombs, chairman of McCombs Enterprises and a founding partner in the circuit, said in a statement. “I want to thank and commend Bobby Epstein for getting us across the finish line. Bobby’s perseverance and leadership kept the project on track despite unfair and unfounded criticism.”
Click here to read the full statement
Circuit of the Americas officials declined to reveal financial terms of the deal.
“Mr. Ecclestone is a masterful negotiator. He fights hard for his company’s best interests,” Epstein said. “I’m glad that, in time for 2012, we were able to reach a mutually acceptable deal.”
Three weeks ago uncertainty about the status of Austin’s Grand Prix caused work to be halted on the $300 million circuit being built in southeast Travis County.
A spokesman for the track said construction on the 3.4-mile circuit and buildings would resume immediately and that it would be fully up to speed in 10 days with between 300 and 400 workers on site.

and, ya, they're definitely aiming for latin american market w/ the location. D.F.'s a few hours' flight and Monterrey's just a short puddle jumper away, and Houston's a major latin american business hub as well so I imagine there'll be plenty of corporate buys from there.
I remember some of the early marketing surveys, and the proposed price for the lowest level grandstands were well above and beyond what Montreal gold grand stands were in 05 across from the pits. Want to say 650-750 maybe.

Hotels bumped from $100 to $700 per night I heard. Minimal camping - which means probably just as expensive as hotels. Ticket for the weekend I am guessing $300-$400 per.
Also I am guessing no coolers will be allowed in - like Indy.
So that being the case:
Transport (Gas/Air) $200-$300
Lodging $400-$1200
Booze/Food (In Track) $400
Other food $300
That's a huge waste of money to gove a bunch of doosh bags.
I'd rather go to Snowbird.

Americans are used to paying $75-150 for sports, football, hoops,etc.......no way $500-700 is gonnna fly.
It will be interesting to see how widely they advertise for the race. The weak US dollar may encourage a large international fanbase to visit. Anyone who goes to the Canadian GP would also consider going to the Texas GP.

between PSLs at pro stadiums and donation levels at major college programs, americans spend a crapton more than a mere 150/game.
coolers will supposedly be allowed, there's supposed to be a good amount of berms for people to spread out on in addition to the grandstands. but now that Tavo's out, who knows if they'll stick to that.

imo, the name they gave the circuit gives away their focus on latin america. between the uber affluent ex pat community in SA to all the subsidiaries & latin conglomerates in Houston to proximity of Monterrey & D.F., 100% focus on leveraging all that $$$

Thanks for the back of the envelope calculation Mr. Peabody :p, but I'm talking about single event tickets, not season tickets.
when the inventory for a crap franchise like the Texans is 90% sold as season tickets, single event tickets aren't as indicative imo.
add in the PSL costs, the preseason games, and it's absolutely ridiculous. NHL and NBA are completely out of line in cost vs. inventory w/ an 82 game season, add in the PSLs for all those new stadia as well.

You clearly have never been to Mexico, New Mexico, Texas or anywhere else the locals know what to do with chili peppers. Mexican food is as interesting, complex and delicious as any other cuisine on the planet. That is one exciting aspect of the GP for me, I love the stuff and I would rather eat there than down burgers, fries and french stuff in Montreal. Yeah several times. It's quite good although there are quite a few other restaurants around that are its equal/better. People love to dump on Utah for its idiotic liquor laws but for some strange reason Salt Lake/Deer Valley/Park City are just loaded with excellent restaurants. If you ever get up to Deer Valley Glitretind, Goldner Hirsch & Mariposa are excellent, The Farm at The Canyons is worth the drive as are Grappa, Silver & Chez Betty in Park City (but P.C. can be stupidly expensive). The Tree Room is excellent if you're at Sundance. Fresco, Log Haven, Forage, Takashi, Bambara, Pago, Martine, Lugano, Mazza, Copper Onion, Cafe Madrid, New Yorker, Em's and Franck's in the Valley are all worth a trip.
And I saw the Golden Corral chocolate fountain commercial on TV tonight:eek::yuck:

rich people start to fume when they don't have great dining next to the 3rd winter home, similar phenomenon in Boulder in the late 90's/early 00's (French Laundry's chef de cuisine & sommelier opening Frasca there probably the biggest example). so that works out great for all the real locals :D

But I share Anks love of the ordinary and suspicion of the pretentious.
My favorite place is a tiny dumpy BYO Thai place in Lambertville, NJ that I've been going to for 30 years. I took my wife there on our first date. Another is a cinder-block Lunch-only Caribbean/soul food place downstate that will make any day a good one.
And there is a NYT 5 star french place here in town I've been to exactly once in 30 years. I much prefer the Mexican place across the street that my friends started about 10 years ago.

Sandy has this thing called the I-15 that will take you north to Salt Lake City and some real food. Sandy is a black hole that is best avoided - it has no redeeming values of any kind. There is no justification for its existence other than upper-middle class Mormons need a place to live in 8000 sq ft vinyl-clad tract houses. Went to a company Christmas party there once, the living room had these huge bookcases loaded with all manner of old books. Got curious and wandered over, turns out they were not books, they were props. An entire wall of books in bookcases and not one single one was real. Turns out there were not any real books except one Book of Mormon and a couple Gospel Principles books in the entire house. That is Sandy in a nut shell.

If you want some very good authentic Mexican in Salt Lake you go to the two carts in the south east corner of the Sears parking lot on State Street. Tacos El Toro is probably the best one. The food is better than 99% of the Mexican restaurants you will ever find.

Sandy has this thing called the I-15 that will take you north to Salt Lake City and some real food. Sandy is a black hole that is best avoided - it has no redeeming values of any kind. Yep. Most of the time my colleagues and I stay downtown, but Sandy is closer to the mine and sometimes I don't have the luxury of the travel time into downtown. I will definitely look for the taco carts though.
Thanks for confirming my impression of Sandy and those homes. It has a plastic Stepford Wives quality similar to Mitt Romney's hair. I was riding in a taxi over to the mine once and the driver was talking about "Those Mormon homes over there..." I asked how he knew they were Mormon and he said all the developments have sections of bigger 8000 sq ft homes for the Mormons to fit their big families. By my eye he seems to be right, now that I know what to look for. :\

personally, I love salumi, but there is no more boring, overrated a cuisine to me than italian,:D
Damm, everybody has their tastes and dislikes, always thought Italian food is among the best. I doubt you are like a former band mate of mine- he's the worst food person I know- if he ever gets to France and Italy he will eat at Mcdonald's. Like beer, I can only eat pasta on the weekends or when I don't work the next day- as it totally destroys my sleep.

Pasta and beer destroys your sleep? WTF? That just means you are not eating and drinking enough. Step up your game. :D

If you said that in public where I grew up that would be a one way ticket to the bottom of a lake.
If you said that in my parents living room, you'd earn the same ticket!

I was lust looking at tickets for the AMA Supercross series and you have to go to places like stubhub to get them. They want >$100 for decent seats:saywhat: These are in football stadiums seating 60K+.
Somehow I don't see it being too much to expect that they couldn't sell F1 tickets for more.
I'm not sure I can justify spending several hundred dollars to take my son to a Supercross race.:irked::shakehead

Has anyone else heard anything recent on when ticket prices are going to be announced and what prices maybe, lodging prices and availability, etc., etc.? This is pretty much the time of year I start to decide on vacations and in August I am almost certainly going to the east coast so the question is do I take a spring vacation or save time for Austin?

It doesn't mean they are in demand at all. It sounds like Austin is trying to give the impression of exclusivity, and this sounds more and more like they are going to do seating licenses. I should have added another 0 to my $500 guess.

All the hotels in town are showing "Sold out" which means they are either booked for teams or held on spec. Motel 6 is $300 a night. Nice. One of my buds has some rooms held out near the airport for a similar astronomical price.

I have no idea where this Applebees business came from (more urban myths about yours truly I suspect) but no, I never go to Applebees, well I havent been to one more than maybe a handful of times. So not sure why you all wanna peg this affinity to crap food at Applebees on me. but whatever, its all about the hate anyway.
Yeah, sit in the back and pour me a martini. Or something. I'm done with the IPA for a while, that **** kicks my ass:thumbup::thumdown:

I ended up reserving a room in NE San Antonio, at least for now. It was at a normal-enough rate. Will be a drive each way, but I'm going to keep looking for closer-in hotels as they may come available. Of course, everything depends on how much we have to pay for race weekend tickets. Oy.

San Marcos is 30 miles out of Austin and they have reasonable prices. Motel 6 on the cheap for $44 a night.
I can't imagine driving back and forth from San Antonio each day. Especially since I like drinking alcoholic beverages to excess.

44 bucks? They probably usually rent that room by the hour and only change the sheets when they begin to crack.
