I will wait for a week or two to let all the apps catch up and for the early adopters to discover all the glitches, bugs and stupidity. Then I'll decide what I'm going to do. Beyond the current decision to do nothing that costs more than $0.00.

Blackberry cutting 40% of their workforce.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/21/technology/blackberry-plans-to-cut-4500-jobs.html?_r=0

Blackberry is doomed because they believed that business customers would always drive their market. When they had a great hardware and carrier support they should have bought Palm who had a great consumer oriented OS but poor hardware and carrier support.

Meanwhile in other news, Gabe Newell of Valve software says that PC makers are in dire straits and Linux is the future of gaming...

Valve Software (makers of Steam, Half Life, Left4Dead, Counterstrike, etc, etc) have announced SteamOS and a SteamMachine game console to be available early next year. The hardware will be produced by partner(s) to be announced and the whole thing is supposed to be open to hacking. Build your own box and put their SteamOS on it if you want.

http://store.steampowered.com/livingroom/SteamOS/
http://store.steampowered.com/livingroom/SteamMachines/
http://store.steampowered.com/livingroom/SteamController/

With PC sales sagging, Microsoft walling off their garden, and other devices heavily controlled by hardware manufacturers Valve wants to make sure they don't end up without an open channel for game development and distribution. So they've been pushing their games to Linux and they hope that their Linux based SteamOS and SteamMachine will be able to bring the full PC gaming experience to the living room.

Apple damned-well better release the Haswell based 15" Macbook Pros this week. I really need to buy a new machine as my early 2006 17" Macbook is finally on its last legs. I've used it just about everyday for 7 1/2 years now and it is just plain wearing out. I don't care so much about retina displays as my vision has gone to **** over the last decade and it really doesn't matter that much anymore:saywhat: The ports have just plain worn out and they don't connect well and the display is just getting dim. Switching to a fast SSD did give it an extra year or two but now I have to encrypt things to meet HIPPA standards and the machine is too old to support the newer standards. Apple's been futzing around for the last six months since they released the Haswell Air, the bugs should be out by now.

I think it is safe to say that I'll most likely notice the speed difference:D

Apple releases a new Maps app:rolleyes::rofl:

New OS system increases video viewing battery life in a Macbook Air by 1.5 hours over OS 8.
New icons for their apps (you know it's the important stuff...)
Improvements to Mail & Calendar (lord knows they really need improving...)

New OS Mavericks is free upgrade from Snow Leopard, Lion or Mountain Lion.

Yeah I get a new computer....
Thunderbolt 2 & 802.11ac
Intel "Crystalwell" chip: quad-core. Iris Pro Graphics.
GeForce GT 750M.
PCIe-based Flash

Lower pricing across the line...

And now for the new Mac Pro (about damn time)
Xeon E5. Quad, 6, 8, or 12-cores. Up to 30MB L3 cache. 1866MHz DDR3 ECC memory
1TB PCI-e Flash storage wonder what that will cost... Disk drives are obsolete...
Can drive three 4K displays at the same time.
$2999 for a config with 3.7GHz quad-core Xeon, 12GB of RAM, Dual FirePro D300s, 2GB of VRAM each, and 256GB SSD.
Almost silent operation 12 dBA

Software. Updating their entire line.

Document sharing via iCloud that might actually be workable...

iLife and iWorks are now free with the purchase of any mac, ipad or iphone.

New iPads... Apple has sold 170,000,000 iPads. seems kind of high maybe a typo in the blog.

OOOh the iPad Air....
7.5 mm thick. 9.7 inch retina display. 1 lb.
A7 chip. M7 coprocessor. Doubles speeds
MIMO for WiFi, 5MP camera, dual microphone. Not available in gold...

Many of the changes link back to improving battery life on portables. One major change for the worse, Apple Mail and Gmail no longer play well together, not even a little bit. There's plenty of blame to go around as Google just made up their own rules for their imap implementation but Apple made things worse with this version.:shakehead:

Last year, the training manual for Apple’s employees was leaked to the media. One of their HR policies is called ‘Fearless Feedback’. It ‘empowers’ any employee to offer feedback to any other employee, whether to a co-worker or a manager. The feedback can be positive or negative, but if it’s negative you must first get permission from the person you’re about to criticize. Sounds like a winning plan. Have you heard of this?

“Hello, do I have your permission to provide you with some fearless feedback?”
“No. Drop dead.”
“Ok. Good talk.”

Apple stresses in its IT customer service training manual that both managers and IT specialists should be at liberty to offer “fearless feedback” to one another. Apple looks for those personalities who are not passive—they want managers to provide honest, deliberate feedback to the IT customer service reps—and, likewise, they want the employees to feel empowered to express their opinions to management. Apple is not seeking out an environment of orders and protocol based on a script. The company encourages its management and IT support staff to have dialogue and constantly find ways to improve the customer experience through open feedback.

Nasty virus out there for Windows machines:

Meet Cryptolocker

So you’re happily working on your Windows computer, getting stuff done. Little do you know, your personal files are rapidly being encrypted so that you can’t access them. Suddenly, an alert appears on the screen—you have 96 hours (or four days) to pay $300 or lose all your encrypted personal files forever. A countdown is already ticking on your screen.

I spent 119 billable hours recovering a law firm from Cryptolocker in September. Happy to answer any questions about it, but two notes:

1. Have a backup of your stuff. Please. Thinking you'll "get around to backup" sometime later is like leaving your jewelry on your front porch and thinking you'll get around to bringing it inside later. Risky living.
2. If you use a cloud backup provider that does continuous backup, you very well could still be hosed by this virus. The backup will copy the encrypted files on top of the good, and the vast majority of cloud backup providers do not have a method to revert back to a point in time for the entire backup set, they only allow you to go to previous versions file-by-file. So imagine 340,000+ files, right-clicking on each one and choosing "restore previous"... (I'm going to lie down for a minute...)

We had a couple of folks hit with it in in October with probably similar time involved. Not that anyone in the MSFT support keeps count of how much time they spend dealing with virus and malware - whether it's the endless patch cycle or constant care and feeding of the security systems it's just part of life for them. For five years we ran Blue Coat web filters, Barracuda spam filters and Zimbra email with no virus outbreaks. In the six months since we switched to Outlook in the cloud and dropped the Barracuda we've had three.

For those looking into backup options I recommend looking into CrashPlan (http://www.crashplan.com/). Their cloud backup is reasonable and they do handle point in time and previous version restore. They even have a free version that you can use to backup to another desktop in your home or even a friend's computer remotely. You and a friend can serve as a destination for one another's backups so that your data is safe in another location. All for free and it works with Windows, Mac, and Linux.

For us, back in October it did not. The installer looks innocuous to most security software since it downloads its payload at runtime. It usually delivers the installer through a ZIP file containing an EXE file disguised as a PDF.

While touting green technology, and lobbying the federal government on environmental policy, Sergey Brin, Larry Page, and Eric Schmidt have put 3.4 million miles on their private jets in recent years, polluting the atmosphere with 100 million pounds of carbon dioxide. Their trips, according to flight log data I analyzed, included single-day jaunts and brief corporate meetings, but also what appear to be hundreds of exotic vacation destinations.

Perhaps someone should introduce them to Google Hangouts?

Few Americans would care that a successful tech company with substantial travel demands and nearly $60 billion in revenue over the past year maintains a fleet of private jets that guzzle fuel by the millions of gallons. But Google uses campaign contributions to strong-arm federal lawmakers into hamstringing everyone else with restrictive environmental regulations, while Google execs cavalierly jet off to exotic vacation spots around the globe on the taxpayers’ dime.

I need the bare minimum. A couple of years ago I bought a laptop to keep at TravelMom's. I make 5-10 transcon trips a year to see her and I got tired of lugging a regulation size laptop and all the hassle that entails. I have multiple computers, at home. I also have the aforementioned "clunker" that I thought would be useful for travel but it's too heavy to be convenient and the battery life is for shucks.

I just want something to while away the hours spent in airports or in the plane. Not to read books, but to do emails or write up reports. That's why the Surface seemed like a bad idea. No real Office software. I hate that "office compatible" junk. I have an Android Samsung phone but it's useless. Or I am. I just can get used to typing on it. Sometimes it's bad NOT to be all thumbs.

I'm so far behind the curve on this that I'm thinking of starting a "stupid question" thread here at OC. Only those with patience and strong constitutions could read it.

If you have trouble with a touch screen keyboard on your phone then you may not find a tablet much more tolerable. You can hunt and peck but you still can't properly touch type. Tablets are great for reading, browsing, watching video, etc, but for text input they're very limited. Add-on keyboards can help but then you're practically back to an ultrabook in portability.

Home: Fn - left arrow or command-up
End: Fn - right arrow or command-down
Page Up: fn - up arrow
Page Down: fn - down arrow

Those are so natural now that I wasn't entirely sure what you were referring to.

I've always considered tablets great for media consumption not production. But when I travel I don't care about production. I can quite handily answer an email or post here if needed. Plus tablets don't have to be removed from you carry-on at the security checkpoint.

That's just it, c-man... as someone who spends about 60-70% of my time on a PC, dedicated keys - even on every PC laptop I use - are what is second-nature for me. Apple has so much space to put them in, too.... I guess they don't use Excel very much.

Most of the time I travel with a laptop, iPad and an iPhone :tony:

Given the choice of one (excepting the need for a phone) my preferred device would be the iPad, however I often need to access rather complex spreadsheets or lengthy Word documents, hence the laptop. I have ventured out overnight with just the iPhone and iPad, but rarely. Hate any form of keyboarding on the iPhone, the 'keyboard' is just too damned small.

:edit:
Someone needs to manufacture a phabletop, I'd be first in line. Seriously, convergence of these devices has to occur, wouldn't you think?

Yeah well as someone who uses a Mac keyboard 98% of the time picking up a non-Mac notebook computer is positively painful:D.
The extended Apple keyboard of the iMacs and Mac Pros has the keys where you would expect them.

And anyone who would purchases one of those runty Apple wireless keyboards gets what they deserve...

Nowadays my travel is all personal so I don't have a need to update work documents from the road. I have apps to display Word and Excel just fine but I can't imagine trying to manipulate a spreadsheet on an iPad or iPhone.

I tried to help my wife set up a PowerPoint presentation to feed a pico projector from an iPad. Way too much trouble. Fonts were completely different among other issues. We ended up saving the presentation as jpegs and displaying those instead.

If the requirement is 'real' Office software you are left with either a Windows laptop or a Surface Pro. A Macbook Air mentioned above can run a Mac version of Office but I think the price might be above what you are looking for.

That's the type of insight I needed. Also about the lack of touch typing capability. And Office, which is what I'm used to using. Not having used one or even having anyone around here I could ask, I was getting that drift from reading articles (and OC!) but I really wasn't sure. Gracias guys. I think I'll nose around but I won't be in any hurry.

If you're one who doesn't like things changing (here) your biggest challenge may be dealing with Windows 8.

If your mobile data storage needs are modest and you don't need a lot of horsepower then you might consider an ASUS Transformer. It's a 10" windows tablet with a keyboard doc. Beware that they also have some Android and Windows RT devices that use the "Transformer" name.

Change? What's that? Thanks, boss. You've heard of things being above someone's pay grade? This is above my brain grade. But I'll start looking. I find that if I read things I can barely comprehend, then keep reading, eventually it all makes sense.

As for the different operation systems, I really haven't had a lot of problem changing (so far). Hey, I even liked ME. LOL! I did hate 2000 but XP was nice and 7 was a delightful change. The hardest change I've encountered was upgrading from Office 2003 and 2007 to 2010. Word is much slicker but it took quite a while to get the hang of it because there are no instructions anywhere. I can't even think about the newer Excel. That's TravelGuy's domain.

Apple may be preferred, but they lost some business from me yesterday. Went to buy a Macbook Air and I learned that you can't use a gift card if there is a gift card in your cart. Since Apple decided to force those on us instead of discounts, I couldn't use $500 in Apple gift cards I have. Now my 2010 MBP will do fine.

cameraman
11-30-13, 05:26 PM
So since they were giving out gift cards with every purchase they decided that no one could use a gift card to buy anything on the largest retail sales weekend of the year? Never let it be said that Apple does not have a flair for the idiotic.

Actually I just saw that Apple's long time policy is that you can not use a gift card to purchase any "one-time event" item. It seems that this promotion is included in that "one-time event" category. So if someone gives you an Apple gift card the recipient can't use it during any sale events. Wow. That is a crap policy.:shakehead:

I'm confused. If the machine is booting to the recovery partition the you should be able to run disk utility to repair the main partition. Did you actually repair the partition or just verify it?

Try turning the machine on while holding down the option key. That will give you a choice of boot partitions. Choose recovery. Select disk utility and then select the main partition, hit the First Aid tab and run Repair Disk.

I boot, get the utilities screen. Select disk utility, then the drive...I have done both verify and repair under First Aid. When I select repair, I get an error message 'Live file system repair is not supported'. Not a Mac/OSX expert, I just read them on OC. ;) I have two choices on drives...the main HD (Hitachi 250GB). Under that is listed disk02 and Superdrive. Below that is disk1 and OS X base system. Neither of those choices allow the repair option. When I select the main HD, the repair option results in the above mentioned error mentioned. When I select disk02 and repair, a list of missing thread records are displayed, and the result is an error message 'Disk Utility cannot repair this disk. Back up, blah, blah, blah...reformat the disk and restore your backed up files'. I don't see an option to format the disk. I have the Mountain Lion CD. I assume the disk is toast, so do I insert the ML CD and boot from it to format and re-install? If so how?

Sounds like the drive died. If you have a new drive on hand the install is pretty easy:

http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/macbookpro_15_unibody_hd/

That video will explain taking the Macbook apart very clearly.

Once the drive is installed boot the machine to the install DVD and format the new drive.

Note about formatting you need to create a GUID, HFS+ journaled partition. After you highlight the partition in Disk Utilities the option button at the bottom of the map is enabled. Click on it and set the proper specs for the partition.

Then you can do a restore from the Time Machine.

You'd be surprised how easy OWC's tutorials make swapping out a drive in a Mac. When you buy the drive from them you also get all the necessary tools for the job.

Surgery performed, and the patient is currently in recovery. I set two partitions...one for 250GB for OS X and the rest (~500GB) for my crap. Is that about right? I wanted to be generous for the OS. I would not advise that this is easy for a man with Shrek size hands/fingers. Those screws are flipping tiny. :saywhat: Most difficult part was re-seating the keyboard/bezel. You should be able to go straight to Mavericks.

Your Mac also needs:

OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
2 GB or more of memory
8 GB or more of available space

I upgraded yesterday since I got the discounted update to VMware. Had a little excitement with getting Time Machine to work again with my NAS but other than that no problems. I don't really see much interesting in Mavericks. Glad it is free.

How about this:

To reset the administrator password using the Mac OS X installation disc:

Insert the Mac OS X installation disc into your computer’s optical drive (or an optical drive connected to your computer), and then double-click the Install Mac OS X icon.

Note: If you’re using another computer’s optical drive, make sure your computer is set up for remote installation, and then go to step 3. For more information about remote installation, see:
Using Remote Install Mac OS X

In the Installer, click Utilities, and then click Restart.

When the Language Chooser appears, select your language, and then click the Continue button (looks like an arrow).

In the Installer, choose Utilities > Reset Password.

Follow the onscreen instructions to change the password.

Be sure to change the password for your login keychain to match your new account password so your keychain is unlocked when you log in. For more information see:
Changing your keychain password

Netgear ReadyNAS NVX. Bought it back in 2009 as they were the only one's at that time that directly supported being a Time Machine destination. Lots of other brands support that now. This one is a 4 bay running Raid X. Been running nonstop since July 2009 with no problems. Pretty sure this model isn't made anymore but I certainly recommend the brand. I still get software updates to it a couple times a year so support seems to be there.

I'll second the ReadyNAS recommendation. I've had ours for three or four years with no problems. A drive failed a couple of years ago and I took the opportunity to replace it with a larger drive and then roll in another larger drive to expand the unit with no need to migrate data. There are other options in the home NAS market now but most of them don't have the protocol support, features, and add-ons that ReadyNAS offers.

One thing that I thought was really interesting in the Amazon story that I hadn't heard before is that Amazon places products in their fulfilment center not according to a type of merchandise, but according to dimensions in order to optimize density on the shelf. So it all fits together like a puzzle and the software tells the pickers where to find the item.
