Not that I know. Even if I did, why no guest login love? Off to the Genius Bar shortly.
A firmware password prevents the computer from being booted from any source without typing in the EFI password first. You would have had to use a special program called Firmware Password Utility to do it. It isn't something people normally do.
You might try a NVRAM reset. If that is screwed up it can prevent the machine from booting properly.
Turn off the computer
Hit the power button then immediately hold down Command-Option-P-R and keep holding them down for two startup chimes.
See if that does anything.

Anyone looking for a business opportunity? It turns out that there is currently no way to encrypt a Windows 7 or 8.x boot camp partition on a Mac running OS 10.9. Well you can but it breaks the encryption on the OS 10.9 side.

Work gave me a Surface Pro 2 yesterday to evaluate. Interesting for sure. It is definitely far better suited for a corporate environment than the iPad, but it also sucks in many ways. It is only slightly lighter than my daughter, and she's 17 years old. The keyboard is surprisingly good. The wake-up time is bad. Office works very well. It is thick and therefore somewhat unwieldy. It's immediate integration into a windows file sharing network is very nice. It is hard to find things you want to find in the OS. It plays almost any type of media out of the box.
It is hard to find things you want to find in the OS.
That is why many of us can't stand Windows 8. :yuck:
Is your employer considering these as a laptop replacement?
I had the misfortune of dealing with a Windows 8 machine recently. MS really should just gather up all their user interface designers and herd them off a cliff somewhere near Redmond.
I found a couple of utilities that made the thing bearable. Start8 (http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/) takes you directly to the desktop page at startup and presents a Windows 7-like Start menu. ModernMix (http://www.stardock.com/products/modernmix/) puts Modern UI applications into windows (instead of the default full screen). The combination reduces the suck by 50%. You still end up lost in Metro-land from time to time but it may reduce the rage factor enough to prevent you from smashing your new device.

Doing two things: evaluating the OS (8.1) and trying to understand it enough to have a response when someone invariably claims they are needed and will save millions. I'm typing on it right now -- and FYI another positive is the USB drive which makes it far, far more versatile than the iPad -- and I can't yet imagine giving up my laptop for it. I use one of the largest "ultrabooks" out there (HP 9470) and it is lighter than the Surface, not to mention more powerful.
However, I could see some uses for it in the enterprise corporation if they can fix the weight, bulk, and tweak the interface a bit more. Problem is, the iPad is already in the enterprise and there's no putting that thin, light genie back in the bottle. As usual, MS is late to the game.

I have spend the last 3 days trying to beat a Windows 8 system into some semblance of usability for my 80+ year old father in law. The 8.1 upgrade fails, and I've exhausted everything I've found online. Probably going to restore it and take back for a refund.
The Win 8 interface has some nice features, but the jarring and poorly thought out (not at all really) mish-mash of Metro and "classic" make almost every operation jarring and disappointing. Just about what I expect from Microsoft. :irked:

As long as they hang on to backward kernel compatibility, they're (and therefore we're) screwed. I can almost taste the legacy in this OS.
The last time MS truly made a new kernel was NT4. Everything else has been additive and tweaking.
Brand new out of the box, my MS tablet was using 31gb of space out of its 128. Insane.

Wow that is nuts. The system folder on my OS 10.9 Powerbook is 6.31 GB and the Library folder is 7.67 GB and that is with all the additions from Adobe CS6 Production Premium (and Acrobat for an additional $89:irked:), MS Office and a host of others. Hell the entire applications folder is only 20.01 GB. Summed that would be 33.99 GB for the entire OS and all the applications of a full on computer vs 31 GB for the OS for a tablet.
Pretty sure that MS tablet has a full blown Windows 8 install on it.
Edit: Just checked my Windows 8.0 VM and it 19.1 GB. No office or anything else installed. Does the MS tablet come with a bunch of stuff pre-installed?
IMO, there's a layer of crapware hogging the space as well as the bloated OS. Even on my S3, the Sammy and Virgin layers eat space on the 2GB of root RAM. :saywhat:

KLang and dando, yes absolutely. There are a couple of dozen things loaded that shouldn't be there, just like nearly any new Windows computer. My point is that I was thinking Microsoft, when distributing it's OWN hardware, wouldn't have to crap up the tablet like the Dells and HPs of the world do on their consumer Windows devices.

WB, I hear ya. Unfortunaltely tablets are like cell phones (or as I call them phablets). The mfg has a layer, and then the provider has a layer. M$FT is obviously loading apps to promote their 'products' like Bing, MSN, etc. Lord only knows how much space IE eats. They probably also have a few apps to tie into their gaming stuff. The only real solution is to root them and install a modified OS. In the case of Android, cyanogenmod is the best solution. Can't speak to M$FT tablets, tho. I personally wouldn't touch them with a 10' pole (like an iPad).

the Internet of Things is coming to get you.
“Internet of Things –” the theme of last week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and yesterday’s announcement from Google GOOG +0.69% that it would buy its portfolio company Nest, which makes smart thermostats and smoke detectors, for $3.2 billion. The Internet of Things refers to what less hip people may call home automation or automation of the car, controlling devices like security systems through the Internet and wireless networks – things affecting things.

Google got the Motorola patents which is really what they wanted. The interesting thing about this sale is the Lenovo continues to create the kind of broad product line that companies like IBM and HP are abandoning under the notion that you can't make money on hardware.

Ank's got it.
Paid search ads tend to have higher conversions that organic search results. Track that click through the backend analytics data and you can see who buys what where, what ads work, what targeting/tactics work, what pages of your site perform, etc. It's a data mine that you could very easily lose yourself in.

Missed this at the time. Acquiring the patents is more a defensive move than a revenue generator. It's doubtful that it will save them $10 billion in the long run but we'll never really know how many lawsuits were or will be avoided.

SYNC has got to be the worst POS I've ever used. It's a constant fight between the driver and the car just to make a phone call or change the station on the radio. http://www.zdnet.com/five-operating-system-alternatives-to-windows-8-and-xp-7000013765/
from the XP article:
Some had assumed that given the massive Windows XP installed base, Microsoft would budge and extend its support another year or two, but the vendor has stood firm, saying that the OS is simply too old and vulnerable to today’s security threats, for which it wasn’t architected.
Is 'architected' a word?

Also very widely used in ATMs
Windows XP support ends today. But it’s still used by everywhere from governments to ATMs. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-switch/wp/2014/04/08/windows-xp-support-ends-today-but-its-still-used-by-everywhere-from-governments-to-atms/)
Those ATMs by and large are not exposed to the public internet. They either are connected via dedicated data circuits, virtual private networks or dial up. If they could be hacked, I would have thought they would have been by now, support of XP or not.

Does this mean they'll stop embedding their stupid amazon app in Android phones?
The two big gimmicks for the Amazon phone are "dynamic perspective" (basically a 3D interface) and "Firefly". Firefly looks pretty cool - take a picture of something and it will identify the object and search for it or find searchable text, phone numbers, or URLs and link them. It would be better if it were Rufus T. Firefly and it made wisecracks about the item, but anyway it sounds pretty neat.
Aside from those two things it sounds like a Kindle Fire with a phone built in. It's locked into the Amazon store which would make it frustrating and disappointing when it comes to apps. It's also AT&T only which would probably make it frustrating and disappointing as a phone.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EOE0WKQ
I've actually been mostly pleased with AT&T over the years.
I don't see anything compelling enough in the Fire Phone to make me consider changing from Apple. Tough market to try to break into. I suppose their main target audience might be Kindle Fire owners but I don't think Amazon has released actual sales figures so I don't know how big that market might be. I am a happy Kindle e-reader owner but I've not been tempted to acquire their other devices.
I'm glad to see a deep pocket competitor join the market. 3D doesn't excite me so much now, maybe after the technology matures. Firefly does. I suspect we'll soon competitors with similar features. We all win.

Which more than doubles the battery life and also does an admirable job of armoring the phone.

You mean the same way they didn't test antenna attenuation? :D
My son received his new 6 last Friday. It is surprisingly thin, but to me it's too slick. There is no grip on the sides, would be way to easy for it to slide out of your hand. It doesn't resemble previous iPhones, very unApplelike in a sense.

I used to think the thinner the better but even my Razr M gets a little difficult to use one handed. And of course the penchant for making these things out of smooth metal or plastic doesn't help.

And you would be daft to upgrade an iPhone 5/5s to iOS 8 until 8.0.3 comes out....
Apple has now posted procedures to help iPhone 6 owners recover from the bad iOS 8.0.1 update:
Loss of cellular service or ability to use Touch ID after updating to iOS 8.0.1 on iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus
We have a workaround for you if you have an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus and you lost cellular service and Touch ID functionality today after updating to iOS 8.0.1. You can reinstall iOS 8 through iTunes by following the instructions below. We are also preparing iOS 8.0.2 with a fix for the issue, and will release it as soon as it's ready in the next few days.

This is where being so secretive hurts. They have so many fanboys, they could easily take advantage of them for a public beta/test. Yes developers get access early, but they're focused on Apps more than day-to-day usage. And most don't develop on their personal devices. Also, if you do find problems, they can only be discussed in the Apple community where the community is highly protective of Apple.

I just got a Galaxy S4 ($240 on sale from TMobile) and it is dangerous to handle without a case. I think the designs are intentional so they can make large profits on accessories.
Fanbois prove that people will do anything to have the newest thing out there.

Most people put theirs in a case. I rarely see a naked iPhone out in the wild. ;)
Got my 6 today. Nice and thin and light and I do like it but THIS IS BIG ENOUGH. No more.
Any phone you get that has a screen edge-to-edge, Otterbox the sonofagun ASAP.
Had a new S3 for approx 2 days, dropped it the only way possible to spiderweb the screen (translation: it hit the ground ;) ).
Consumer reports weighs in on bendgate. (http://www.macrumors.com/2014/09/26/consumer-reports-iphone6-bend-test/)
A little actual scientific testing instead of youtube crap on the internet.
In other news, Ballmer bans Apple products from the Clippers.

In the same vane, they have let some press in to their labs to see how they test products for durability.

I don't expect an Apple mea culpa on this one.

Microsoft announced the next version of Windows today.
Some key points about the next version of the Windows desktop OS, which for no apparent or explained reason, is not Windows 9, but rather Windows 10.
· It will ship in 2015, probably 2H
· It is the beginning of a campaign for “One Windows”, which includes mobile, desktop, and IoT
· Win10 may also be the next Windows Server, although there’s some uncertainty here
· The start menu is (completely) back
· Touch is somewhat de-emphasized but there will be no “non-touch Windows 10” version as rumored
· You can CTRL-V into a command prompt. This seems to be trivial; but what it is, for sure, is a decade late
· They have an OS X “Spaces” concept, which they are calling multiple desktops, but the press is calling “virtual desktops” – FANTASTIC, that name won’t cause any issues
· Windows Store apps will run inside standard windows instead of full screen (except on Mobile)
· A preview version will be available tomorrow, but MS cautions it is super-duper pre-release quality
No announcements on price. No announcements on licensing. Hopefully, those things come in the near future… and hopefully, they’re positive.

Ctrl-v gets you a command prompt? Not "paste" as in copy and paste in just about every piece of software on the damned planet?
