"Half of the International Space Station's cooling system suddenly shut down during the weekend, forcing the astronauts to power down equipment and face the likelihood of urgent spacewalking repairs."

Next year they should plan ahead and service the AC system before the busy summer rush. And on a weekend to boot. :shakehead

Those weekend repairs cost more too.

Among the equipment powered off for now: the Global Positioning System circuit, several power converters and a set of devices that route commands to various equipment.

Two of the four gyroscopes initially were shut down - part of the space station's pointing and navigating system. But the crew installed a jumper cable to bring up a third gyroscope, leaving the station in a much more stable position.

These look kind of important. :saywhat:

Jumper cable? :saywhat: Do they have a supply of duct tape and zip ties too?

Dude, as long as the Flux Capacitor is operational, it's all good. :D

I buy it by the case. I have a roll in each car, each room of the house, the garage and basement. I feel naked without a roll nearby :D Does that make me a :gomer:

Still broken. They should definately talk to the landlord about a credit on their next rent check.

All fixed and happy. Since US coverage seems a bit scant...

It has an interesting link at the bottom to some NASA PDFs on the ISS that you may not have seen.

MOSCOW -
The Russian space program's Mission Control Center says it will move the International Space Station into a different orbit to avoid possible collision with a fragment of debris.

They do that more often than you'd think!

Have you watched the ISS fly over? It's pretty cool to see!

Lots of resources to see the station are linked to from http://www.isswave.org

You know, I never have seen it go overhead, AFAIK. I've looked for it when I let the dogs out @ night after the local weather geek gives a heads up on it going over Cbus, but I haven't spotted it. I can point out the constellations to the girls, but not the ISS so far. :(

Check the tracker sites - I am seeing a visible pass here in the AM tomorrow. You will know when you see it. Think Venus but moving deliberately and slowly across the sky. And no flashing lights.

Watching when a shuttle was hooked up to the ISS was always cool.

We saw a very cool pass when the shuttle had separated and was on it's way home. Two bright dots passing in formation
