Got a surprise text yesterday afternoon, friend of a friend comped me a couple of tickets and backstage passes to The Who last night. I'd been ambivalent about seeing Townshend et al again for a number of reasons, besides the slight tweak about the appropriateness of touring under the name after Entwistle died.

I'd previously seen The Who four or five times, I've lost count. The first was in '82 (after Keith died, sadly), and it the sort of intense, high-energy show for which they were famous. Absolutely amazing, still one of the best live shows I've ever seen. Caught them again in '89, much sleepier with a bunch of extra musicians on stage, more than a bit disappointing after the fire of '82. Caught them again in '95, some other shows of which I'm fuzzy in the late '90s-early '00s, each of which seemed progressively more tired, with more and more musicians backing them up, leaving Pete almost completely inaudible in the mix.

Every time I'd read a positive review of one of their shows, I'd think to myself, yeah, great show, if you didn't know what they used to be capable of.

I was pretty sure I didn't need to see septuagenarian Pete pretending to be something he wasn't anymore in a big stadium show. I wished he'd settle down and do some nice acoustic shows, ala Neil Young's Bridge School sets- I'd happily pay money for that. Tickets went on sale, thought briefly about taking my teenaged Keith Moon-worshipping daughter, thought better of it at the price.

Wow. Townshend was absolutely on fire through at least the first 6-7 pieces, sounding better than I'd heard him in 25+ years, with a tight, stripped-down band. Roger took it easy with the high notes until 'Love, Reign O'er Me', where he let it rip in hair-curling fashion. 2.5+ hour set with no breaks, few pauses, and high energy start to finish. If Townshend's solos got somewhat less ambitious as the night went on, who could blame him? It'd be enough to exhaust a guy half his age.

At the end of the set, Townshend thanked everyone for coming and for their patience (this was a reschedule from last year), and told the audience that they should tell their friends that didn't come that they missed out, FOR TOMORROW WE DIE! ...with his fist raised, as the crowd roared. Great moment.

Catch this tour if you get a chance.

I think (and I am hardly alone) that the music is really really good. It is a fantastic piece. Also I must have missed the Schoolhouse Rock episode where the central character was born out of wedlock in the Caribbean, orphaned young and emigrated, fought in a war, founded the US Treasury Dept, Coast Guard, NY Post, was involved in the first major US sex scandal and whose son was gunned down in a duel in New Jersey which he himself would meet the same fate in the same field just a few years later at the hands of the sitting US Vice President.

By the way it looks like Lin-Manuel Miranda has posted the entire soundtrack on a song by song basis (46 songs total) on Youtube for those that are interested.

Have you seen the size of the Chernow book that Miranda used as the source material? It takes serious talent to boil that much down and set it to music.

For me, it's RENT, specifically the original Broadway cast recording. Jesse L Martin singing "I'll Cover You" a capella gets me every time.

Funny you should say that. I have been thinking of getting it and yesterday I heard/read that it is something like 700 pages long (that is like Robert Caro type length). The first thing I thought was "and Miranda read it on vacation?!" Even before getting to the talent to boil it down is to be able to see through all the details that there is a story the general public could be interested in as a musical.

My undergraduate degree is in history and some of the stuff I was just unaware of or plain forgot, like the sex scandal and his loss of a son in a duel (not to mention Martha Washington naming a feral tomcat after him). Plus his general back ground and the family he married into give you a lot to work with as well. In a lot of ways he presents and almost soap opera-ish type story to drape a story about the founding of the country over, not to mention he appeared the be pretty good a generating enemies (which likely accounts for the fact he found himself in that sex scandal and the VP found it necessary/desirable to shoot him).

Didn't realize you had a minor in musical theater to go with that JD. ;)

Let me profess my bias right here. I hate musicals. HATE. If there were a stronger word, I'd use it. They actually make me uncomfortable to sit through. Before I was married, the future in laws bought expensive tickets for their daughter and me to go see Phantom of the Opera and Mamma Mia with them. I fell asleep during Phantom. I've never been closer to suicide than during those 4 hours. The Phantom guy who used to sell albums on TV K-Tel style was awful. AWFUL. It's always been my contention that if someone could sing, they'd be a singer and if they could act, they'd be an actor. :gomer:

If there something that the story of Alexander Hamilton needed, it probably wasn't being set to music and adding dancing. Of course I'm lacking in culture and I just don't get it. Fortunately for me, if there's something I could choose not to get, this would be it. :D Dramatic theater or monologue-type things don't have the same effect on me. I think Eric Bogosian and Spalding Gray are (and were, respectively), geniuses.

I'm obviously in the minority on this and if people enjoy it - more power to them. Personally, I'd rather staple my lip to the carpeting than sit through one. That's my opinion, which I am the leading expert on.

From what I have heard of Momma Mia it sounds horrendous. In any event, don't expect me to ever ask you to a musical (truth be told, I am hardly a huge fan and not talking school plays I have been to 2 or 3, but don't quite look at it like you do).

1-3 stand on their own as music only. The Wall has some terrible songs on it, as well as some of the greatest rock songs ever written. I think Rocky Horror sucks. I watched it twice to make sure. I see it as being popular because it's the original counterculture rock musical so people have that attachment to it. It's the Atari 2600 of musicals. :gomer:

I also think that most rock operas (and I hate that term), tend to have a higher degree of sing-songy crap that's unnecessary. It's what John Lennon called "Paul's granny music".

IMHO, Dylan's songwriting is on the short list of 20th century cultural contributions that anyone will remember in 200 years. That said, I've seen him perform maybe half a dozen times, and as a performer he's, umm, a great songwriter.

The Nobel committee's criteria for literature weighs 'idealism', however that's defined, to as great an extent as literary merit. Given the built-in controversy that naturally follows, one might argue that looking to the Nobel to build a reading list is a bit akin to shopping sports cars in Consumer Reports.

“This week Bob Dylan became the first songwriter to win the Nobel Prize for Literature - to general acclamation. But not from me, and I'd feel the same way if they'd given it to Cole Porter or Oscar Hammerstein or W S Gilbert. Ira Gershwin liked to cite the old Encyclopedia Britannica definition:

SONG is the joint art of words and music, two arts under emotional pressure coalescing into a third.

Bob Dylan is a practitioner of that third art: not words, not music, but the transformation that occurs when the former sit upon the latter.”

I am going to nominate the Hoover Dam for next year's Nobel Literature award. It rocks.

I'm stoked because Kasey Chambers will be touring in the States. Better still, she's coming to our little town and performing in what looks like a tiny little place.

I've been listening to rockabilly of late. Found Deke Dickerson and really like him:

Amazing show from Kasey Chambers on Saturday night. One of the best I've seen in a while. Her voice isn't for everyone but she's hugely talented and she packs every note with soul that cuts right through to your heart.

It was quite a treat seeing her in a venue that was only slightly larger than her tour bus.

I like the twang voice and it is clear what music she heard growing up. I made one show here years back, but she was sick and it was cut short.

Following her IG page and other social media, I get the impression that there are few if any pretenses with her. What you see and here is pretty much who she seems to be. Ordered a signed CD years back - and was surprised to be emailing her mom when there was a mailing issue.

She certainly seemed that way. She thanked the crowd for being willing to pay to hear her music after she stole it from us, took it to Australia and then brought it back. She also apologized to those in the crowd who got dragged to the show with someone that can't stand her voice. :) They were all dancing by the end of the night, I suspect.

This is funny as hell and actually very, very good. I present to you a clown singing the lyrics of The Who's Pinball Wizard to the tune of Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues. By the way, check out some of his other clips. He is a great singer and I swear next time he is in town (he does tour) I am going to go see him.

Someone here linked his cover of "Royals" with Postmodern Jukebox a year or two ago. Not sure if it was this thread or the Youtube thread but I can't find it now. (Note - put searchable text in your video links.) Great to see that he's gaining some attention. Dude has done a brilliant job of turning his "not quite right for the pop music market" attributes into something where he can at least (hopefully) make a living.

Heh. Found it. It was me in response to a "Royals" (www.offcamber.net/forums/showthread.php?18633-Royals-shizznit) thread. Not sure how I came across it.

Pro tip: search for the Youtube id for the video.
