It was a great concert. Some of the acts that have been around a while have lost a step or two (or perhaps were never great in concert) so you know you are not seeing them in their prime. Not for a single second last evening did that thought occur to me. They are simply a great concert band.

Roger Waters in Tacoma. Wow. High-energy show, let alone for an old guy. Even played the bulk of Animals, one of my all-time favorite albums.

Puddles was on America's Got Talent, or X Factor, or So You Think You Can Sing, or some stupid show.
He was on America's Got Talent last night. I took it that the show had people on that got bumped in other shows but they felt they were worthy of a second chance, or something like that.

I love this. It's always so illuminating to hear the performers as they really are, as people. Here's an excerpt from a piece by Peter Larsen that appeared in the Daily News (San Fernando Valley's newspaper). Typical Jimmy Webb. So simple and direct but you can tell he's hurting.
"This wonderful bond was created by Glen's singing and my songs, " Webb said at the time [2015]. "With all due respect, I don't think anybody could touch us as a team." They had talked about doing another album together not long before Campbell's Alzheimer's diagnosis, and while he regretted that project was never to be, the long, slow loss of a loved one that Alzheimer's creates was a much more deeply felt one, Webb said. "It has been an absolute tragedy for some other people who are so much more important than I am--Kim and the kids," he says, "I wouldn't place my loss anywhere near that of the family, but must say that in my own personal arena, it's been a tremendous blow. Of the the five friends I have in the world, he's one of them and I miss him. I don't think that I realized what I was losing until it was already happening and tall of a sudden it was 'Oh man, I'm going to miss this, I'm going to miss this a lot.'"
And speaking of Jimmy Webb, I just picked up his memoir published earlier this year "The Cake and The Rain". Have only just started but I already know I'm going to enjoy this. Jimmy was a car guy, Glen gave him 3 Corvettes. Jimmy also purchased Carrol Shelby's personal Cobra 427 Super Snake.

Missy and I took advantage of the opportunity to see Jeff Lynne's ELO up in Detroit on Thursday. ELO was always a favorite of ours from back in the day. Even though I had reservations about the later stuff after Lynne moved on from the classic string arrangements I loved so much, this was a bucket list show for us. It was great. Here's a bit from Wembley.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKElk9zTB04
I'm happy to see the recent resurgence in interest in the old ELO stuff. Lynne's work has been hugely influential and if there's justice he'll eventually be in the R&R Hall solo in addition to the recent induction of ELO.
I still think that an ELO/Metallica Super Bowl half time would be epic.

Still stuck on Samantha Fish. We saw her in embryonic form on the Blues Cruise and she's really developed into a force since then. She's been cranking out new stuff and the last three releases have run the gamut from her original guitar driven blues rock, to vintage rock and soul, to country blues. I'm irritated because she's popped up at a hole in the wall venue here in town a couple of times and every time I get word after it's
after they've sold the thing out.

I dunno, young datachicane was definitely all hopped up at the idea of a new Pink Floyd album back in 1979. A friend of a friend of a friend managed to get his hands on some advanced release vinyl, seems like it was a full week prior to the official release. We had a big party, played all the Pink Floyd albums in order, with the big climax of the evening being the new release. I absolutely loved Animals, still one of my very favorite albums, and imagined a darker, grittier turn down that same road. I'll never forget the look in all of my friends' faces when the moment finally came- we all looked at each other, and it wasn't pretty. By the time we finished side 4, the mood was pretty sour. I know that it's now seen as this great icon, but at the time it felt like a missed opportunity. I still think an aggressive edit down to a single disk would help it immeasurably, and this from a fan of Ummagumma. One of my buddies had the perfect take, describing it as a Pink Floyd album for people who don't like Pink Floyd.
It might be heresy, but I'd rank it below Obscured by Clouds. Young Lust is a fine track, as is Comfortably Numb, but much of it is dull and repetitive. I'd say it was their worst album, but then came Final Cut <shudder>, and some albums that I would have liked much better if the label had just let David Gilmour put his name on them and call it good.

Emmo is now 16YO and aside from discovering girls, his musical tastes are growing. We've had these discussions about albums versus the Spotify way of listening. As an example, I used The Beatles Abbey Road medley. Could you ever just hear Golden Slumbers without Carry That Weight? The idea that stories are told and moods are set across multiple tunes seems to be a lost art.

I needed to take a moment after reading that.
First, let me reiterate that I wasn't talking about "best album" - even though I would argue that it is. Probably. On most days. I was pointing out that it's a musical achievement that may be impossible to replicate in today's music market.
My view, and I'm unanimous in this, is that it's their crowning achievement. Everything before Dark Side is a different thing. It all developed from there. Animals is brilliant and in some ways maybe their best as a band. But it's like a still image of its theme and to me it feels incomplete. I think some bands could still achieve that in today's market.
The Wall is a fully formed narrative. I get that it's a little more Roger Waters than some people can take. He makes sure to let everyone know that. But Bob Ezrin saw that it needed more from the other band members and as a result I think Gilmour and to a lesser degree Mason are woven through Waters' songs more effectively than on any of there other work. Right from the first notes, all the iconic moments in the album are a punctuated with Gilmour or Mason's trademark sounds.
One thing hopefully we can agree on is that The Final Cut was mostly garbage. As brilliant as The Wall was, The Final Cut beats its themes into the ground. It's a truly tedious listen for anyone who is not a member of the Church of Roger Waters.

I heard Simpson on the Joe Rogan podcast so I checked this out. He said that it sat in the can for quite a while until the Anime could be completed. I really want to like it. It's very fresh for a "country" artist. Somehow it's not quite sitting right. I think it's a little hit and miss.

Exactly. Album sales have fallen bellow 200,000 for the first time since 1973. I saw a statistic that current release album sales have now fallen below back catalog album sales. This doesn't account for streaming. I don't know if anyone actually tracks album format streaming but I would guess that it's small as a percentage.

I've done a pretty significant amount of volunteer work at the local high school over the last six years or so, and I'm always shocked at the number of kids wearing gear sporting The Beatles, Zeppelin, The Who, Pink Floyd, etc., etc. (far more than was actually around back in the day, when the only place to pick up a tour shirt was at a show). Granted, these kids are all in the music program, but I suspected it was more of a fashion statement than an indication of any familiarity with the stuff. I was wrong. Kid in Maximum R & B shirt? Favorite Who album is Quadrophenia. Well, of course it is. Kid in Floyd shirt talks to me about Meddle. Go figure.
The weird thing is, that's all 40-50 years old now. I can't imagine any of my friends back in 1978 talking up Paul Whiteman. Sure, there were a few of us that listened to Count Basie and Duke Ellington, but not many.

My 20 Year old daughter's favorite band is The Beatles. My 25 year old son asks me about Yes and King Crimson and listens to a lot of old music, as well as hip hop and other more modern stuff.
And I can't remember the last time I bought an album and I'm 55. I just go on Spotify and add albums to my liked list. And you can like entire albums and play them straight through. So personally, bemoaning the end of albums is kind of like bemoaning the end of 8-Tracks.
Spotify is great. Pretty much any album you want, you get the whole thing. I discovering lots of old music from Albums that I would never have purchased.

As for Pink Floyd, I could go on ad nauseum about this, but I think I'm of the opinion that The Wall is great, but different, and hard to compare it to their other work using the same metrics. Lots of bands have that one "different" album, but most are complete failures. The Wall wasn't. I personally don't care for Dark Side of the Moon. Most would disagree. Most of the solo work of Waters and Gilmour misses the mark with me, but I think it's fairly clear that most of the PF sound that people identify with emanated from Gilmour. A few weeks back I realized that I'd never listened to Radio K.A.O.S. and after doing so, I wished I hadn't. Sweet weeping Jesus. :saywhat:

Caterwaul was one of my favorite bands from the late '80s that failed to take off. Caterwaul just didn't fit with what that was popular at the time. I always thought that if they'd arrived a few years later when grunge and some heavier alternative rock became popular they would have had more success. Through the '90s I collected every cut-out copy of their CDs I could find because I always had people asking for copies.
This was before live shows became a sea of cell phones recording in lieu of people actually watching so I had never actually seen Caterwaul play until I recently came across some videos on YouTube.

I really enjoy his "what makes this song great" series and his commentaries on why popular music today sucks (it's scientifically proven). My one beef with him is that when he complains about labels blocking his videos. Either he doesn't understand the problems that Youtube creates for artists and labels or he's just playing it up as a "little guy against the big labels" story.
I doubt that any of the labels really care about Beato's videos. The problem is that the tools that Google provides to artists and labels to control illegal uploads of their content. You can either sign up for Google's terms so that they identify and monetize your content on their terms (Google pays one of the lowest rates in the industry) or you can tell them block stuff outright. My mom has always been a big Neil Diamond fan. Back when I was a kid, before I had started buying music of my own, those old Neil Diamond albums were a fixture under the record player. Most of them were too mellow for my tastes, but there was one that I always enjoyed: "Hot August Night." A true classic live album. I finally added it to my collection and I still enjoy it.

Very cool! I've always loved a great brass section. I used to play my parent's Blood, Sweat, & Tears Greatest Hits album constantly. When I was 15 we were on vacation in Ocean City, Maryland and BS&T happened to be playing a cocktail bar there. My mom took my friend and I to see them and it made quiet an impression. Blazing horn section, David Clayton Thomas on vocals, and cocktail waitresses in those classic high cut cocktail waitress outfits. :gomer:

As a part-time sound engineer I'm fascinated with the double mic set up behind the pop filter on "Wake Up"... I think they were only using the super old school capsule mic for that song but not positive.
Going to have to listen again to focus on the brass. :)

Samantha Fish has a new album out. She's run that gamut of styles in her recent releases and they've all been great. This one promised a pop/rock/r&b vibe and my guard immediately went up. I heard "pop" and saw the sexed up presentation and feared that she was another artist being co-opted by a producer to crank out tik tok soundtracks with a dozen hooks per minute to a drum machine.
I shouldn't have worried. Fish has become a rare talent, a true triple threat of outstanding song writing, guitar chops, and vocal talent. The variety of influences shows. You can almost feel Prince and RL Burnside jamming with Etta James on vocals.
There is one misstep. Midway through the album everything gets derailed when Louder, a great cut, abruptly jumps into a completely gratuitous rap interlude. Things get back on track quickly, but it's an unfortunate interruption to the flow of the album. As usual her live performances are already as good or better than the album cuts.

With each album Samantha has featured at least one track that shows how she continues to grow into a force among singer-songwriters. On this album it's "All The Words."

Me and the buds are trying to decide between The Rave in Milwaukee and Park West in Chicago for her December show.
I say Park West all the way.
This album is trying to showcase more vocal range. It accomplishes that.
One or two songs (wife took the CD on a road trip) are "pop" songs with hardcore guitar solos mixed in. Very '90's-ish? I don't mean it in a bad way, it's just hard to pin down.
This album has actual Production behind it (missing from her previous albums, IMO, except Kill Or Be Kind was ok). It will be interesting to see her with this band lineup. A background singer?!?

Yes, and yes! I haven't replied to this thread before because my taste runs to classical music mostly. Recently I've been listening to Yuja Wang. If piano picking isn't your specialty, you might like the eye candy. Though not all her outfits are this revealing, she really knows how to dress!

She must practice while wearing those shoes. Working the pedals can’t be easy. Amazing pianist. And nice belt she’s wearing!

 Did you happen to see the guy in front of the stage shielding his son's eyes at the very beginning? No? Me either, not until the third time through. LOL. Her Tchaikovsky piano concertos are especially brilliant. I'm not a total music nerd so I got a big kick out hearing the Monster Mash today. :) :) More inventive than I remembered. I see he's now on the cruise ship circuit. Also a treat to see Dick Clark in his prime. So relaxed; before the days when every word and movement were planned out in advance.

That's what I thought but then I found a link and.... Oh well. Thanks for setting me straight.
And now for something completely different....

Her real name is Patricia Büchler and is from Germany. I would have guessed Ireland for some reason, though. Maybe her hair. She has several videos out but I figured one would be enough for most people. :D

Evidently their lead singer recently gave a fan a golden... opportunity to come on stage and get a unique perspective on her performance.

Yeah, I saw the video of it last week. As advertised in the article. She wasn’t kidding, she really had to go.:rofl:

Pretty much captures the moment. The video is now all over the internet, several versions of it, in fact. For the daring, google "brass against video reddit" and it will appears in the search results. I suspect if anyone was curious, they would have seen it by now. Not for those easily offended.

I've been going all retro and listening to Alan Parsons Project on YT, specifically "I Robot" and "Eve". I'd basically forgotten that I had those in vinyl. Brought back some memories.

Country, I guess - but if you're into storytelling, pain expressed in both lyrics and vocal emotion... hard to beat. "Well daddy, I've been tryin'..."

Gogol Bordello? It kind of gives me that vibe.
And I apoligize for being old, but wtf is a "house show"?

I don't know if this is just a regional thing, but it's common (or at least it was, pre-COVID) for folks here to book a band to play at their home, and sell tickets to friends/neighbors to offset the cost. Being the PNW, the weather's unreliable, so the setup is usually to clear most of the furniture out of your front room and do it there (my neighborhood is all not-giant 80-100yr old houses, so no giant theater rooms, etc.), so on average you're limited to an audience of 30-40 on a good day. Shows invariably sell out. There's usually the expectation that you'll bring wine/beer/food to share, there's always kids, and you'll generally know pretty much everyone there. The bands are usually prominent Portland acts, sometimes with bigger (sometimes much bigger) followings outside the area- within a few blocks of my house, we've seen the Portland Cello Project, Alialujah Choir, Hook & Anchor, etc., etc. We do see some odd touring bands that come through the area and fill in dates between bigger shows, including a rock-ish electric violin act from Siberia, a fantastic Japanese bebop band, etc., etc.
I don't live in some hipster hotbed, either- this is Salem, about 40 miles south of Portland, and it's a sleepy cultural backwater by any standard, not more than a handful of clubs in town. Pre-COVID, we'd average 5-6 house shows a year just in our immediate neighborhood. It's a great way to expose kids to live music, and after the set the band usually hangs around and socializes for another hour or two.
Anyway, some kind of funky folk/bluegrass/blues/pop hybrid is common for the bands we see out of the PNW, with the odd sea shanty or Fleetwood Mac or Metallica cover thrown in. As an old guy who doesn't hit the clubs or follow the music scene like he used to, I can only assume it's a somewhat representative sample.
Definitely not just a PNW thing. It's something independent artists started doing since nobody buys music anymore and clubs don't pay jack for live music that isn't guaranteed to fill the venue with minimal promotion. A band with small dedicated following can make as much as in a small club, sell more merch, and often get room and board in the deal.
