Glad to hear it's not just a regional thing. My daughter's just about to graduate from college now, but it was fantastic to see her and her friends get turned on to decent live music at such an early age, something that would be tough to pull off otherwise. Seeing a group of middle-school girls, all musicians, geek out about funky time signatures after a set of PCP Brubeck covers may be the single coolest thing I've ever been a part of.

A full live band in your front room?!

I've heard of such neighborhood events, but always outside. The sound tech in me is twitching. :)

I'll be in Seattle in February to catch Rick Wakeman and Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets in the same week. I am such a geek.

I'm working a new job in a credit union. We normally have a small boom box in the corner playing the local "indie rock" (aka early MTV playlist) station. For last week we played a soft rock station who was doing 24/7 Christmas songs. That, fortunately, ended Thursday at quittin' time 'cuz we were off on Friday.

Now, you're all probably going to snicker, but the one thing I learned from 16 hours of classic Christmas music is Nat King Cole simply doesn't get anywhere near the recognition for having one of the finest voices in recording history. Holy smokes that guy had pipes.... Dean Martin, despite having a delivery that made him sound drunk, had a voice, too.

I'm checking out a couple of CDs from the library.

Her real name is Patricia Büchler and is from Germany. I would have guessed Ireland for some reason, though. Maybe her hair. She has several videos out but I figured one would be enough for most people. :D

She also is/was in a metal band Storm Seeker.

Samantha Fish has a new album out. She's run that gamut of styles in her recent releases and they've all been great. This one promised a pop/rock/r&b vibe and my guard immediately went up. I heard "pop" and saw the sexed up presentation and feared that she was another artist being co-opted by a producer to crank out tik tok soundtracks with a dozen hooks per minute to a drum machine.

I shouldn't have worried. Fish has become a rare talent, a true triple threat of outstanding song writing, guitar chops, and vocal talent. The variety of influences shows. You can almost feel Prince and RL Burnside jamming with Etta James on vocals.

There is one misstep. Midway through the album everything gets derailed when Louder, a great cut, abruptly jumps into a completely gratuitous rap interlude. Things get back on track quickly, but it's an unfortunate interruption to the flow of the album. As usual her live performances are already as good or better than the album cuts.

With each album Samantha has featured at least one track that shows how she continues to grow into a force among singer-songwriters. On this album it's "All The Words."

[QUOTE=G.;346908]Me and the buds are trying to decide between The Rave in Milwaukee and Park West in Chicago for her December show.

I say Park West all the way.

This album is trying to showcase more vocal range. It accomplishes that.
One or two songs (wife took the CD on a road trip) are "pop" songs with hardcore guitar solos mixed in. Very '90's-ish? I don't mean it in a bad way, it's just hard to pin down.
This album has actual Production behind it (missing from her previous albums, IMO, except Kill Or Be Kind was ok). It will be interesting to see her with this band lineup. A background singer?!?

1123

Make no mistake - her new lineup/tour is a Rock-n-Roll show. And she CAN rock!

My camera work sucked bad that night, sorry.

Took my wife and her sister to this one.
I hate to agree with them, since I am smitten, but Samantha is a hot mess.
She's doing a mixure of everything, while doing nothing. She neeeds to pick a genre, and beat the ever-living **** outta it. And yes, I'll go see her again.

(P.S. - Chicago audiences suck. Call-and Response? "Nah, I'm paying YOU to sing, so YOU be the Bitch on the Run.")

Ok - I am a sucker for a twangy voice... stumbled across Lydia Loveless recently. She is out of Coshocton, Ohio and has an alt country, rock, punk sort of mix.

Pink Floyd are releasing a new single in support of the people of Ukraine entitled Hey Hey Rise Up. The single will be available on all streaming and download platforms from midnight tonight. This is the first new original music that they have recorded together as a band since 1994's The Division Bell.

Promise this is only a slight, temporary derailment.

This is a "what" topic, but may I ask "how"? Anyone here use higher-end in-ear monitors for listening? I have AirPod Pros but am really looking for some significantly improved isolation so I have better reproduction of lows and mids.

SteveH
06-10-22, 09:59 AM
Just read about the below, no experience with them.

Apple AirPod Pro user, only gripe is that I wish the noise cancellation was stronger. But maybe that is too much to expect from an in ear device. I have some over the ear headphones that are much better. Originally JBL which I replaced with a low end Anker. Couldn't really tell much difference. But there was 3-4 years between them so I'm sure the tech had advanced.

Belkin SoundForm Immerse Earbuds pairs battery life with noise cancellation technology (https://appleinsider.com/articles/22/06/07/belkin-soundform-immerse-earbuds-pairs-battery-life-with-noise-cancellation-technology)

No help here. I'm too cheap and go through headphones/earplugs too fast to consider anything high end. I like the sound on the cheap Koss earplugs. They're a great value. Reviews on the bluetooth ones with isolation aren't great, though.

I never considered the Airpods because every hard plastic Apple earplug I've tried was like a torture device in my ears. I see that the Pros at least have pads so maybe they're not so horrible.

Last month I invested in a pair of the Airpod Pros (at the suggestion of my kids). They are a huge improvement in wearability over the old school wired Apple headphones. The audio geeks I know preach the over the head/ear headphones for the best sound - not in the ear.

I use mine almost exclusively for the gym - so that isn't necessary for me. I think the noise cancelling is pretty good (versus none) and I am really eager to see how well they work on my flight to Colorado next week.

Thoughts on Apple's Spatial Audio? I can't decide if it actually sounds better or is just a parlor trick.

SteveH
06-13-22, 11:13 AM
And speaking of earbuds, has anyone had any experience with memory foam tips to replace the standard Apple silicone tips? There is a slight difference is the size of my ear canals and one does slip a little when exercising. Maybe a memory foam tip would fit more securely. There are several available. Supposedly they create a better fit and also block out additional ambient noise. Any experience?

WickerBill
06-13-22, 02:19 PM
Steve, I use Comply foam tips for typical on-stage IEMs for that reason (stay-put) and also better noise isolation. I think they have a model of foam tip specifically for the Pros.

Kate Bush continues to conquer the world with a song from 37 years ago.

https://www.cnn.com/2022/07/01/entertainment/kate-bush-world-record/index.html

But it gets better. Kate Bush owns pretty much all the rights to her music as well as her master recordings. Which means that she's getting by some estimates 80% of the revenue from all this fresh attention. Many artists get stuck with the opposite split, if that.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/music/news/kate-bush-has-now-made-2-3-million-from-her-37-year-old-song-featured-in-stranger-things-according-to-one-industry-estimate/ar-AAZk2YU

Lately I've been filling out my collection with music I loved from back in the day, but couldn't afford to buy.

As a teen it was "Duke" that really turned me on to Genesis. The older Gabriel stuff was too prototypical "prog" for my taste. But I never went backward in their catalog. Recently I went back to "A Trick of the Tail." It's still a little too on the nose prog in places, but still very good.

It's also oddly familiar. I remember "Squonk" like I've heard it a thousand times. Great song. I thought maybe it was on Three Sides Live, but it's not listed. Maybe I got a cassette tape out of the cutout bin back in the day and had it in the car back in the day.

With much of the "The Peripheral" series mentioned in the other thread taking place in Appalachia, they've included a great collection of Americana tracks as the soundtrack. One of the great tracks I discovered from there is from an Icelandic band called Kaleo.

I guess I shouldn't be too surprised since one of my favorite country artists is Australian Kasey Chambers. It's in the soul, not the blood.

In sifting through their videos online I came across this amazing performance recorded at the Fagradalsfjall volcanic eruption in Iceland. This is one of several performances from amazing Icelandic settings.
