Not looking to start a thread about religion but I found the results too amusing to ignore. Pew is a reliable neutral outfit.

If you check out the questions they covered all religions so the results make a little more sense. I do seriously wonder about the 11% of Mormons who did not know who Joseph Smith was:eek:

One could also say the less you believe, the more you know. That is, you feel is sooooo important to be able to justify your position. E.g. many Protestants know a lot about the Catholic church and hold very exalted discussions about why they are not part of it. Or, how people know the details of the Indy League while espousing complete disdain for it. I mean, seriously, that trophy!

Ahh, latter day saints. :) A whole belief structure based on the simple fact that Jesus came to New York to tell Joe Smith to move out west and start a religion. :giggle: ;)

Took a world religions class in high school years ago, plus I like to read....
so 12 out of 15...... all questions I got wrong were old testament/new testament stuff. Not too bad for an atheist by choice, RC by upbringing... ;)

Well, they hold a lot of opinions, whether or not they're well-founded.
It's absolutely important to know something about faiths we don't hold. How often do we see folks of all stripes make assertions about the followers of other religions which are both passionate and demonstrably untrue? How can you make any kind of comparative statement at all without understanding both subjects?
Of course, opinion unsupported by evidence is pretty much the coin of the realm, unfortunately.

The First Great Awakening? Never heard of it or at least I have no recollection of ever having heard of it. I thought it was easy up until that one...
I tend toward the agnostic.

I didn't know the correct answer to "Which of the following best describes the Catholic teaching about the bread and wine used for Communion?" Sadly, only 59% of White Catholics got it right.
I was surprised to know the answers to some of them though. If it wasn't multiple choice, I would not have known the answer and I doubt a guess would be close.

The question is, is that knowledge gleaned from that person actively pursuing knowledge about another religion or repeating what other people have told them?

13 out of 15. I missed the prayer in public schools and nirvana questions.
Maybe I'm looking at this quiz from the POV of having 16 years of Catholic school education, but many of these topics were not just covered in religion class, but also in history. Joseph Smith & Jonathan Edwards are part of US History. Global Studies classes included a review of Eastern Religions in order to better understand the political/social environment of the region being studied. So maybe once you remove the theological questions (transubstantiation, Moses, etc), this might really be considered a review of religion in history.

14, but I missed nirvana (wife was right, who woulda thunk it? Must be a miracle! ;) ) and completely guessed on Great Awakening.
If you asked me details about the religion that I was brought up in (RC), I'm afraid that I would bomb it. Too busy thinking sinful thoughts to pay much attention.
Something that I learned in the last year or so is that the date of Easter Sunday is determined from the moon phase. I thought that only those "primitive" religions used moon phases, not the enlightened Christians... :rolleyes:
(all sarcasm aside, all religions suck, except for FSM of course. :thumbup:)

I think there was a religion based on bacon, beer and hating Tony George. Rick Mears was our Jesus, Road America was our Mecca, some guy named Kevin was our Judas. We are still waiting on the second coming, and it is not looking good for this lifetime.

Funny thing is that I might not have gotten this score when I was going to church on a regular basis.

My long held belief is that knowledge of religions has nothing to do with spirituality.

Not specifically bacon, but I heard the secular humanists have a hedonism merit badge that includes bacon along with a lovely assortment of complementary indulgences and diversions. :laugh:

12/15 I missed the Great Awakening, one of the Supreme Court questions (prayer), and the start of the Jewish Sabbath. I KNEW is started at sundown Friday, but talked myself into clicking Saturday.

Don't feel bad. I only missed one, the Jonathan Edwards one (Great Awakening) because I talked myself into believing it was the senator (John Edwards of "Ooopsie" fame) that I was thinking of and not the actual Jonathan Edwards. Talk about over-thinking. :rolleyes:
