I decided to check out some of the NASCAR forums, and disovered some threads about yesterday's car swap. Mostly positive comments as well. Glad to see it got that level of attention.

I don't know about that.. my brother, a NASCAR fan, gets comp tix to MidOhio every year, with hospitality perks. Even though he's been there a few times and has enjoyed himself, he would rather pay to see a NASCAR race than go to a CART race for free. He can appreciate the Champ Cars, but he still prefers NASCAR. Maybe it's just that he doesn't have to walk around the track to see the WC cars action. When I ask him why he prefers NASCAR, he really can't explain it, except to say that he likes "all the action." The dumbing down of racing, indeed.

I've brought NASCAR fans to all sorts of road races (CART, ALMS, SCCA, etc.), and they all enjoy it. At first they tend to dwell on the differences between NASCAR and whatever we're watching, but usually they start to enjoy it for what it is. The only problem is theres nothing there to keep them following it on a regular basis. If you take someone to a NASCAR race and they like it, they know they can watch every weekend on FOX or NBC. Take someone to a CART, ALMS, or F1 race, and they aren't going to know that it may be the last race for the next 3 weeks, or that 1/4 of them are on CBS and the rest on Speed. Plus, in the case of many races, the local media coverage virtually disappears after the race weekend.
