View Full Version : Katherine Legge to Indycar?
Last week pressdog interviewed Katherine while she was in Indy.
She didn't say she was going to race in the "Most Important Race in History", but it sounds like she wants to. :saywhat:

While I'd like nothing more that to see Kat kick the danicle's arse six ways to Sunday, DON'T DO IT !
The earl is a place for losers to finish a (less than distinguished) career. With the very real possibility that you will not be able to walk away from the experience.
Stay in Europe, race in the DTM, make pretty babies - stay safe and healthy !

Go to the ALMS, or go to Grand Am before the IRL. If you want to be in North America go join Dalziel, Forest, Valiante, Edwards, Fogarty, Gurney, Bomarito & Hand. Just stay the hell out of the IRL.

The article mentioned some "back and forth" like she had the option to stay at Audi but decided to leave to further her career.
That has to be a "lost in translation" effect. In what universe is Indycar a step up from DTM?

In the USA I have simply more chances.
-Katherine Legge
So Audi wouldn't give her a newer car or a better team and wanted her to continue as their "lady racer" whose only real competition was Susie Stoddart.
Ok, I get it. A driver wants to compete. That's understandable.
But in the IRL or any series, she'll be compared to the nearest female equivalent: Danica, Simona, Milka, Allmendinger, Wheldon, etc. It's gonna be the same problem she had in the DTM only in a different language, with worse cars, in the middle of nowhere.
Besides who is hiring?

End of racing for Kat!
My thought exactly. One more nail in the coffin of real racing. As they all fall into the trap of the only series still going, it hurts even more that we, the fans, are left on the outside, wishing there was something to cheer for.

I had a quick conversation with her at LBGP, and got a very thoughtful look when I reminded her that a Dallara isn't near as protective as a Lola, Swift or DP-01... and they fly!!
She said that running in that race is "on her bucket list", and consequently, she may have the opportunity to get a lot out of the PR just by being there.
No question she is nonplussed with the package, but the scorched earth policy that dictated what we have now is all that is left on the AOWR landscape, hence she has no choice if she wants to race in the "fiyhunnert".

Why are so many euro girls obsessed with tempting the grater?
Because there's always a $pot for them in the Acceptance $eries.
Besides, are they running any ovals next year?
This just seems too blatant. They don't even pretend to spin it.
The former Atlantics, Champ Car and DTM series driver has sponsorship for a full-time ride next season with a team to be determined later this week. Her deal with the team, when signed, will be two years with an option for a third.

Good point about the lack of ovals. I guess if you don't draw the short straw at Indy or Texas, you probably won't get hurt driving that pig on a street circuit or road course.
How did she convice a sponsor to put money into the IRL?

That drivers meeting after Wheldon's funeral must have included a brain washing session. The IRL does not care about safety. But why should they when drivers are stepping over bodies to get a ride? :shakehead
Dan Wheldon did not die in an accident. This was not some random combination of unforseen events. The IRL knew the car would fly, but did nothing to fix or replace it. The IRL knew pack racing was dangerous for open wheel cars, but promoted it as "exciting". The IRL knew high banked ovals like Las Vegas would put a car into the grater, but they kept putting them on the schedule. They knew their Safety Team was a joke, but did nothing to improve it. That makes me furious. What saddens me is that Dan Wheldon knew all that too and chose to race anyway. :(
I hope all the IRL drivers stay safe, but I also wish they would wake the **** up.

ot oh danicles might lose a fan
Legge's sponsor might be a company called TrueCar.
http://blogs.indystar.com/racingexpert/2011/12/13/dec-13-on-legge-and-phoenix/
From an Autoweek story:
TrueCar will throw its money behind female racers in premier series and up-and-coming ones in numerous development series.
Five drivers have been confirmed for the 2012 TrueCar Racing Team:
1. Shea Holbrook, Pirelli World Challenge
2. Ashley Freiberg, Star Mazda
3. Shannon McIntosh, USF2000
4. Verena Mei, Rally America
5. Emilee Tominovich, MX-5 Cup
TrueCar is in sponsorship discussions with an IndyCar driver and also will support an all-female Baja 1000 team in 2012.

Does anyone recall what happened to the driver involved in the last IRL fan sweepstake?
as seen over at smackforum:
Legge is out at Dragon Racing, but her sponsor TrueCar is staying without her.
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/legge-threatens-legal-action-against-190636874--spt.html
I'm sure it burns, but I can't think of a better way to exit Indy Cars.
Legge brought truecar. But, the deal only worked because of the association to the Penske dealerships (Dragon's Jay Penske being Roger's son). The same deal would have never worked at Coyne or Conquest. At the end of the day, the tie in with Penske Auto means more to True Car then a decal on an Indycar. Unfortunately, Dragon needed more $$$ for running cost and Saavedra had it. Simple as that. If Legge would have matched the $$$ she'd still be driving. She didn't get screwed, as some people like to think, she just didn't generate enough $$$$.
Does anyone recall what happened to the driver involved in the last IRL fan sweepstake?

Former DTM driver Katherine Legge will test the DeltaWing experimental prototype next week.
The Briton, who raced for Audi in the DTM in 2008-10, has been brought in by the DeltaWing Racing Cars squad for a try-out over two days of testing on Sunday and Wednesday at the team's home track of Road Atlanta.
She will share the car over the two days with former Panoz and Chevrolet American Le Mans Series driver Johnny O'Connell, who has tested the DeltaWing in both its Nissan and latest Elan/Mazda-powered iterations.

After just one test session with the DeltaWing Racing Cars team at Road Atlanta, Katherine Legge will make her first race start at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on May 11. She joins Andy Meyrick for an all-English driver lineup for the DeltaWing’s first start at Monterey in the American Le Mans Series

Katherine Legge will drive the Delta Wing again at Lime Rock in July.
http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/06/13/nissans-deltawing-will-race-at-lime-rock-park/
I liked the correction at the bottom of the article. Adventures in PR. whoops. ;)
Correction: June 13, 2013
An earlier version of this post misstated Nissan's affiliation with the DeltaWing. The company is no long involved with the car. The post also misspelled the surname of the car's designer. It is Ben Bowlby, not Bowler.
Also, according to her twitter account, she was testing the Flying Lizard porsche at Sonoma earlier this week.
Legge has not completely abandoned thoughts of some day returning to open wheel IndyCar racing. In fact she is in talks with at least one team to race before the 2013 season is done.
“This doesn’t mean I don’t want to do IndyCar any more, because I do,” she said. “I am in talks with Sam Schmidt Motorsports to do a couple of races later this year.”
