Also, don't ever ever ever install a new OS or a new SP from Microsoft the first few days it comes out. Wait to see if you hear wailing and gnashing of teeth from early adopters first.
Surface, why on earth are you so eager to get SP1?

and besides, the world is about to come to an end
According to theJournal.ie, an Internet Service Provider, Hurricane Electric, is claiming that the Internet is running out of space or in other words IP address and on February 2nd,2011 at about 4:00 am all the IP addresses will be consumed.
SP1 Doesn't sound very exciting according to ZDNet (http://www.zdnet.com/blog/microsoft/windows-7-service-pack-1-whats-inside/8436).

You mean no more option for 32-bit? 64-bit Windows has been an option for a while (XP Pro).

I don't think any CPU makers are talking 128-bit publicly. I'd think we're ~10 years away from 128-bit computing.

In the server room and HIGH end workstations. We haven't seen true 64bit on the desktop yet. The current AMD and Intel chips are at the 40-48 bit stage. M$ would have to rewrite Windows from the ground upfor true 64bit computing on the desktop.

I think without getting into a long winded discussion, 32-bit or 64-bit refer to the data the processors are manipulating as opposed to bus widths or addressing widths. They usually keep those numbers closer to real world needs for design purposes.

Microsoft confirms Windows 7 SP1 RTM, released to OEMs today
Tom Warren
14th Jan 11 9:36am
In a blog posting on Thursday, Microsoft’s Russian Windows Virtualization team confirmed that the final build of Windows 7 SP1 is 7601.17514.win7sp1_rtm.101119-1850. The Russian site also explains that the Service Pack will be available publicly today. Microsoft generally releases Service Packs on a Tuesday so it’s not clear whether the Russian technet post is referring to a public release to select partners or a full web release. WinRumors understand the software giant will ship the release to its OEM partners today but that a web release is expected at a later date.

psr.exe – Hidden Tutorial Maker in Windows 7
During testing of Windows 7, the engineers working on the Operating System wrote a program to document movements made by mouse in order to debug the Operating System. The program is still in Windows 7 but it is hidden from public. You can access it using command psr.exe. Just click on Start, type psr.exe and hit enter. The following Toolbar will appear.

Press record and go on with whatever work you want to record doing. The program will save it in a .mhtml file that you can later use for presenting, teaching, etc. This tool also allows you to add comments. With this tool, it is very easy to make presentation and show it to people who want step by step procedure to do any work

So should I download this 44 MB thing or not? It's coming up on my screen as "important update" but I have to opt in if I want it. Actually, I have everything set up to opt in but this one is even intially unchecked.

I'd be shocked if it ends up being only 44MB. Probably 10x that.
Most folks probably oughta wait a few days to see how things shake out. Personally, I'm hitting the work laptop and 2 servers with it tomorrow morning. We'll see...

There is a update that has to be on your computer before service pack 1 will load. It is......KB976902 it is a 4.4MB file for Windows 7 32bit; a 10.3MB file for x64. The 64bit update is up to 900MB in size, compressed exe and the 32bit is a 537MB file

Holy C R P!
I must say, even I thought it was odd that it said 44 MB. Maybe I read it wrong. Still a sickie (not sicko, thank you).
Is this puppy crucial or can I continue to successfully ignore it for, say, two or three years?
It's mostly just a roll-up of previous fixes. I doubt most care about the couple of additions.
