View Full Version : Snowmageddon!
Will it be as bad as they're warning?
DFTW airport closed, site if the HooplaBowl. Are the teams there yet?
Lines for gas stations.
Expecting 12-24 inches.
Any advice from you right-coasters?
Are we all going to die, cold and alone?
Snow days are cool.

Not when you work out of your house.
You have bigger problems if your commute is icy. :)
Front edge of the thing blew through here at 6:00 this morning. Even down here they are predicting freezing temps and possible snow by the end of the week.
Snow was a bust last night - barely an inch.
Intermission now - ice fog and light sleet.
Freezing rain begins later this afternoon and into tomorrow. NWS used the term catastrophic ice accumulations - though they are lessening the chance of that.
If not freezing rain, it will be >1" of rain. Even that will cause a mess given the snow pack on the ground now.

In the words of former Buffalo mayor Jimmy Griffin, get a six-pack and stay home. :)

Had some freezing rain last night- enough to coat the roads with ice but nothing major. The drive to work was actually pretty good this morning, no doubt b/c the schools were closed and there was less traffic. Getting up the hill and out of our neighborhood is usually the trickiest part of my commute on a day like this.
teams have been here, I believe we stuck the nancy AFC types in cowtown, the NFC guys are hustling Dallas. I think the media's set up in FW too, ESPN's set smack dab in Sundance Square

We only got a few inches of snow, but minus 15 last night and we are supposed to get down to -20 tonight. Since we a now a nation of wussies, they cancelled all school today, due just to cold. GMAB, I could go on and on about walking through chest high drifts, uphill, without shoes. :gomer:

We got about 0.001" of snow and sent the air pollution on its way towards Denver. It's about 15°F now and should be 0°F tonight. Just normal January crap. Spring can't come soon enough. Every forecast snowmageddon has been a complete bust around here.

nancy. The 147 MPH winds blew most of it to Kansas.
We live in NW Cbus and I drove about a mile NE of our house and the snow/sleet/freezing rain is 2x worse a mile from our homizzle. Awaiting round 2.... :saywhat:

We have about an inch of ice and it's supposed to keep coming down until 1am, then off and on until 7pm tomorrow. Then wind, then powerlines come down.
Hooray for running power in the air vs. burying it like other countries!

There's not a cloud to be seen, 12°F with winds gusting to 45 mph.
The relative humidity is at 22% (watching my skin crack:saywhat:)
Official "Ice Storm Warning" by the NWS now. :irked:
We are very close to the projected rain/ice line - hoping for rain.
Generator at the ready.

Continental was kind enough to cancel this morning my flight from Montreal to Newark tonight and rebook me on a flight in the am. Don't see that flight going either, but I am being paid, I'm in Montreal, the Habs play tomorrow night if I am still here and there is wonderful food.
Was I complaining?

Our snow isn't supposed to start until after 10pm, but we're supposed to end up with over 12-16" when all is said and done. Most schools have already closed for tomorrow.

plows stopped a long time ago.
Cool storm. Lightening for a bit. Gotta throw the g.'s into the drifts tomorrow. Headfirst. Nothing bigger than maybe 4 ft so far.

Apparently I have the leveling wheels on the sliding glass door set too high. I came downstairs a while ago and there was a pile of snow inside the door.
I don't think I've seen wind chill factor stated in a Houston weather forecast before.

I'm just northeast of St. Louis. We got about 3 in of sleet and 3 in of snow. Luckily I'm not supposed to be back at work until Thursday night - hoping everything is cleared by then.
We had a great time though. We live on a steep hill so the kids braved the sleet and were actually sledding down the street.
Our neighbors came over, sent the kids to the basement while the adults went through a couple cases of Schlafly and two fifths of the Capn'. As soon as my head stops pounding I'll go out and help the boys shovel the snow.

19 inches overnight. No plows out and about yet, snowed in, "working" remotely from home today. Amazed that the boss turned into a human being yesterday before our very eyes "your safety is our primary concern"....
Dog totally non-plussed. The Drifts are bigger than she is!!

Just finished shovelling our puny excuse for a driveway. (Mid-Missouri) Took almost 3 hours. It's been 25 years since I've seriously shoveled snow and I've been parked behind a computer for the last 12. I'm knackered. Time for a hot shower and a cold beer.
Iced in here. I just went out for the second day, trying to break through. No luck, even with a sledgehammer. Working from home doesn't suck.

We usually have to shovel out a path and a potty spot for our dogs. They hate rain and snow.
It's snowing here now but there's nothing accumulating on the cars in the parking lot. Rush hour will probably still be a bitch though. :saywhat:

Email making the rounds:
I just got off the phone with a friend in Wisconsin .
He said that since early this morning the snow has been nearly waist high and is still falling.
The temperature is dropping below zero and the north wind is increasing. His wife has done nothing but look through the kitchen window.
He says that if it gets much worse, he may have to let her in.
Get ready for the deep freeze coming up.

It's a good time to have a shovel in the house. And outiside doors that open inward. And a generator.

One thing I learned the hard way a few years ago is if the snow gets too deep, you may want to make sure the air intake/exhaust isn't covered while wondering why the heat isn't working.

4 things I love about that picture: 1) beer cans laying around, 2) picture of Jimmy Hendrix on the wall, 3) apparently they decided to mark the growth of the snow drift with tape on the door, like you do your child, and 4) still have not taken down the Christmas decorations.
PS - So I imagine them sitting around drinking beer and listening to Hendrix as they stared outside as the snow built up instead of being useful and taking down the Christmas decorations.

I will admit I loved sitting in the waiting room of my density working on those picture puzzles that appeared in, what was it called, Highlight magazine or something like that.
By the way, coming from you that is a complement since I seem to recall mentioning a water ski thing a few years ago and you came back with a satellite pic of the exact one I was talking about.
