Summer Reading

Now that I have a little time off from reading textbooks - and a week long, electronics free week at the cabin, I could use some good suggestions for
reading.

I've read all of Vince Flynn's books, quite few Grisham, and a few of David Balducci's. Might be time to branch out into some different areas.

Just finished Parasite Rex (http://www.amazon.com/Parasite-Rex-New-Epilogue-Dangerous/dp/074320011X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1306511498&sr=8-1), interesting book if not for the squeamish. For something entirely different, I started rereading Logue's War Music (http://www.amazon.com/War-Music-Account-Books-Homers/dp/0226491900/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpi_1), sort of a poetic adaptation of the Iliad. Very cool stuff.

I was going to say I never heard of that author then I realized I have this sitting on my book shelf unread:

I read nothing but non-fiction and am working on 3 books right now. David Halberstam’s “The Children” which has been sitting on my shelf for 10-15 years unread. It is about a group of young black civil rights activist from the late 50s/60s who are from or went to school in Nashville. Robert Caro’s 3rd in his series of books on LBJ, the one covering his Senate career (I think it is called Means of Assent) and lastly Hacker/Pierson’s Winner Take All Politics. All of them are pretty good.

Since I am near the end of all of them there is a good chance I start a new book this weekend, especially since I have some time off in the upcoming weeks. Maybe I should read the Zimmer book, or I was thinking of the book Halberstam wrote that came out shortly after he died on the Korean War.

I just picked that one up today. I also have North & South on my shelf.

As for recommendations, anything by Christopher Buckley is a very good read.

Currently finishing the P.K. Dick collection "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" which includes The Adjustment Team. Finally saw that one at the theater. Enjoyed it, but it suffered from the same thing as a lot of Dick short stories - the point was the concept, not the plot.

I'm also reading William T. Sherman's memoir on my phone when a book isn't handy. I've always been an admirer of Sherman and it's fascinating to read about the times from the perspective of someone living them.

Next up will be Paul Brown: The Rise and Fall and Rise Again of Football's Most Innovative Coach.

I didn't realize he had one, and that it is still in print. Ever read Grant's?

Sherman's are available in print (http://www.amazon.com/Memoirs-General-W-T-Sherman/dp/1611044510), but I'm reading the free ebook (http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/4361) from project Gutenburg.

Haven't read Grant's but I may follow up with that. It will be interesting to see what Sherman and Grant have to say about the various scandals in Grant's administration.
