The hockey world has had a rough summer, and it continues with this. The KHL now has to implement the plans all leagues have and hope they never have to use.

KHL Statement

We are only beginning to understand the impact of this tragedy affecting the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl club on the friends we’ve lost and the international hockey community.

First and foremost, our condolences go out to the families of the players, coaches and staff lost in today’s tragedy. We know that there are many in the KHL family who will be grieving with us.

As the investigation of this tragedy progresses we will work closely with investigators, government officials, club executives and the Yaroslavl community. We are working to find an appropriate way to honor this club and begin the healing process from the deep loss so many of us feel today.

We are aware that many of you have questions. This tragedy remains our primary focus. We ask for patience as we find an appropriate way to proceed with the 2011-2012 season. We will continue to communicate our plans as they take shape.


On the first day of the season as well. I suspect every pro league will look at how the KHL reacts and work to update their own emergency plans.

Russian reports now saying that the 2 survivors, player Alex Galimov and the flight engineer have both died in hospital... That could of course change as new info comes in.

Sad news. :( Such a brutal summer for hockey fans. '02 draft pick by the CBJs, Ivan Tkachenko, was also on board. :(

Whew. That was a tough one.

From today's agent briefing:
The YAK-42 aircraft belonging to Yak Service, a regional carrier, crashed shortly after takeoff from Tunoshna Regional Airport. According to reports the plane hit the antenna of a lighthouse, which is located right beside the runway. It is unknown why the plane was not able to climb after takeoff. As a result, the aircraft broke in two parts, one of which fell into the Volga River. There were 43 people onboard the plane and two survived the crash but are in critical condition. Most of the passengers aboard Yak-42 were the players of Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey club who were traveling to Minsk for a game. The Yak-42 was developed and built in Russia. The first flight was in March of 1975. Only 188 of the three engine planes were built and 9 of them have crashed, killing 562 people.

Good to see from the article above from TKG that they are planning to take those aircraft out of service.

But before anyone jumps to a cause, Russian Air Safety is an oxymoron. These planes may just have had the unfortunate luck to be flown in Russia.

And WoW. Really bad summer for hockey, youbetcha donchaknow. The kids that get left behind get me the most.

I did too. Perhaps the family took it as criticism that the children didn't know what they were headed for. In their grief, they are extremely sensitive. I took it as an unknown, outsider grieving with them and railing at the horror and unfairness of it all.

Media reports indicate that the airplane travelled past the end of the runway onto the grass, lifting off about 400 metres past the threshold. It barely climbed, contacted obstacles until it crashed and broke up on the side of the river.
The Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC) reported in a statement that all engines were working until the moment of collision with obstacles and that before takeoff, the stabilizer was set to 8.7 degrees "nose up" and the flaps were selected in the take-off position of 20 degrees.

The Tunoshna airport's runway was three times longer than required for that type of plane, but the plane still failed to accelerate sufficiently before takeoff, Russian deputy transport minister Valery Okulov said.
