Great guy, and someone who tried to do for those who could not.
I nearly broke down when he showed up at Milwaukee for the final time. Paul walked into the pits, alone, wearing his usual all white outfit. I don't think anyone knew he was going to be there and when he climbed over the inside pit wall and began walking along pit lane he was soon recognized. Drivers ready for practice took their helmets off and walked to him. Lots of handshaking. Just brief conversations. They all knew. It would probably be the last time they would see him. I watched through my binocs from about 27 rows up. I knew, too. He didn't stay long, probably not wanting to bother or distract anyone. That had to be pretty tough. I always smiled at his little routine of kneeling in front of Mario's wing on the starting grid and giving the car a couple of little taps followed by a thumbs up to Mario as he stood to clear the grid, usually among the last of the team to go. Same ritual, EVERY year. Every RACE, I suppose! What a guy. A real best friend to American auto racing, among SO many other things! Thanks, PLN. Tap, tap
A man's man and a true gentleman.
I always felt like the race fans knew the "real" PLN more so than the movie fans.
A man's man for sure. I remember his racing Leno on the Tonight Show. Epic. Newman's Own always.

Cleveburg weekend, 2006. Newman in all white [/obvious], strolling through a warm-up heat's pre-race. Paul Rodgers of Bad Company fame on the right in the yellow sleeveless. Man, that guy sucked as a kart driver.

Danny Sullivan (blue short sleeves, and you can't see it but it's the number 29 kart) gets ready to take it to PLN:

PLN starts with a hole shot not unlike the one he pulled on Leno. For a few laps, Sullivan put up a good fight against PLN, and stays close:

PLN pulling oot a healthy lead over Danny Sullivan:

That was a fun weekend.
Maybe not as cool as the first time I saw PLN at a race, which would have been when he rode a scooter past the T2 campground at Road America as we were setting up our tent in 2004, but it was still cool.
(We used to go to races - or rather, we used to have races to go to.) :(

Thanks for those pics, that was a FUN weekend. I remember taking photos of PLN in the timing stand for NH. Someone asked me "who is that?" I shocked him when I told him it was PN. That's the way he liked it, it was all about the racing.
BTW Cleveland Rocked!!!
