Twenty-three years old, has heart attack in the middle of an FA Cup game today in London. Medics get to him quickly, but ten minutes later they rush him off the field still not breathing. Get him breathing in the ambulance. Condition is critical. But.... ten minutes without breathing; isn't he brain dead for sure?

Survivor of the civil war in Zaire, family fled to the UK and were granted asylum when he was eleven.

Sad stuff. My biggest (irrational) fear for my kids playing sports.

:( Your fear is not irrational. It's just that the chances of it happening are very small. I was worried about that too when my girls were in high school. They lettered in track, cross country and basketball and they just killed themselves seven days a week. Two runners died in Wisconsin during the time they were in high school. There should be cardiac screenings in middle school for athletes.

Not if they were doing chest compressions.

They say there is still a lot of oxygen in the blood.

^^ I was thinking the same thing but it all does come down to how long the brain was oxygen deprived. This happened to TravelGuys' nephew last year. I'll spare the details.

Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba was essentially dead after he suffered cardiac arrest during a match last weekend and needed 15 shocks to get his heart beating again.

Bolton team doctor Jonathan Tobin revealed Wednesday that doctors tried unsuccessfully to revive Muamba for 48 minutes before he arrived at London Chest Hospital, after collapsing during an FA Cup game March 17 against Tottenham. It took another 30 minutes before the 23-year-old Muamba's heart started beating again after 15 shocks.

So, now the details alluded to in my first post. Same thing happened in our family. It was almost as if they were giving the living time to come to say goodbye before they admitted that he was essentially gone from the very beginning. Very sad and very hard to deal with.

In this case, such a tragedy because of his life circumstances. :(

The truly amazing thing is that he survived and can walk and talk. Time will tell if there was any lasting damage.

Ya got me. I didn't read the whole thing (obviously). I'm more than amazed, given our experience. to him.

There should be cardiac screenings in middle school for athletes.there are in my state. And money is available for schools to buy equipment for baseline IMPACT concussion testing and any testing when there is reason to suspect a concussion.

BTW the IMPACT system was developed by a guy who went to Northern Michigan and got a psych degree (just before I did) and did a lot of his early development of the system in partnership with CART. I think CART was the first to require baseline testing of drivers and routine testing after any collision.

Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba has paid tribute to the London Chest Hospital staff after being discharged.
The 24-year-old was technically "dead" for 78 minutes after suffering a cardiac arrest and collapsing in a game against Tottenham on 17 March and had been in hospital since then.
