. . . Titanic and Avatar.

This is really fascinating. James Cameron, the director of the above movies, has designed and built a deep sea submersible that is very radical and blows away what anyone else has come up with. (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/20/science/earth/james-camerons-rocket-plunge-to-the-planets-deepest-recess.html?hpw)

He is going to pilot it himself and on a test run he has already broken the record for deepest dive ever, by a mile.

Dood must not have claustrophobia  No way I'd get in that thing for five minutes. ENORMOUS attachments to do that dive.

I sorta wondered about that when I got to "spinning vertically"

broken record? I thought they did a submersible to the bottom of the Marianas Trench back in '64? How much deeper can you go?

Here's quite a bit of information on the sub

http://deepseachallenge.com/the-sub/

If he gets a cramp in his leg he won't be able to move his legs enough to work it out. He will just have to let it cramp:eek:

To steal a line from one of his movies: That's an express elevator to hell; going down!

The vehicle and the engineering solutions are very cool. If he makes it back he'll be rich and famous. :p

Challenger Deep (http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2011/07/racing-to-the-bottom-exploring-the-deepest-point-on-earth/242486/)

At 35,797 feet, Challenger Deep is the deepest known point in the oceans. It is so deep that, if you were able to place Mount Everest inside of the valley, there would still be 6,811 feet of water separating it from the surface.

Lots of deep sea exploration on TV lately.

That is as deep as you can go. Was it a manned submersible?

Well answering my own question it appears there is no record to be broke, just tied, since a manned craft has made the dive before:

Yeah, I was having a Senior Moment and couldn't remember the name of Trieste... Good to know I've still got SOME grey matter working...

I just read an article that says he has begun his dive. Godspeed to him. Too bad it's not being televised if it is even possible.

The AP seems to be on top of this story. Here's an update.

What happens when he has to go potty? I know I would go potty big-time the second that thing dipped underwater

Is the vessel tethered to the surface ship?

Do Big Brass Ones end up the size of BB's at that depth?

cameraman

No it is not tethered.

As long as the pressure hull holds up there should be no changes vis-à-vis brass ball dimensions.
