So as cameras madly clicked, the drivers quickly backed up the three buses in the narrow streets and headed toward the intended destination: a spotlessly clean, brightly-lit, extensively marbled and nearly empty building that preserves digital music recordings and makes DVDs.
The foreign journalists, invited into North Korea as it commemorates the centennial of founder Kim Il Sung's birth, arrived at the Hana Music Information Center, where a guide told them second-generation leader Kim Jong Il made one of his last public appearances there before his December death.
"I hope that the journalists present here report only the absolute truth," said Ri Jinju, her voice trembling, her hair frozen with hairspray. "The truth about how much our people miss our comrade Kim Jong Il, and how strong the unity is between the people and leadership, who are vigorously carrying out the leaders' instructions to build a great, prosperous and powerful nation."

I'm amused as anyone at the North Korean satellite launch failures. However, I must remind those of you too young to remember that our early launch attempts failed 8 out of 11 times.

The Vanguard rocket launched three satellites out of eleven launch attempts:

The issue is not putting a satellite into orbit, but rather using the 'stated' purpose as a guise for the 'perceived real' purpose, which is to test a long-range missile capable of reaching the US. Add that to the fact that they are testing nukes, and we've got a problem...especially with the hair-brained leadership they have.

Not passing judgement of the N Korea deal - but over the past couple years, I've seen an increase in the planning for response to a nuke. The Feds, for one, are taking the possibility of someone popping off a nuke pretty seriously. It was something that seemed ignored for many years.

In the last few weeks, I've received copies of 3 copies of different emergency response plans for response to nuke events. These aren't fear-mongering or defense industry claptrap - but serious contingency planning. The first was a 300 page plan for Ventura County and most recent a plan for a 10kT (see someone is using that metric system ;)) device on the mall in DC.

In 2010, I received the Planning Guidance for Response to a Nuclear Detonation text. The participating agencies included: DHS, DOD, DOE, EPA, NASA, Red Cross, USNRC.

Perhaps not worthy, but could conceivably become a "surprise" adversary.

The point here is that NorK behaves irrationally. China tolerates it because they have to.

Since NK elected Butthead Johnny Un as the new ruler, there is no expectation that they will suddenly become a rational, global player anytime soon.

NK has a history of pulling some real stupid **** when the going gets tough. In the past, we have rewarded those outbursts with food, I believe. This time they popped off a firecracker, and the US pulled it's food aid.

What ever will Johnny Un do next?
