Reading this article on Indy rookies and I see this:


On Thursday, IndyCar said it will increase the turbocharger boost levels for three days next week — the day before qualifying, Pole Day and Bump Day. The increase should result in an additional 40-50 horsepower.

Yeah, I agree w/ most. Just do it for the whole month and leave it. Phillips claims they can't. (http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/article/indycar-series-adds-extra-boost-defines-aero-options-for-indy/) To me, I'm good w/ engines grenading on race day. Adds another element.

Funny thing is if the goal was to get to 220 or higher, well, already done today by Newgarden. Minus the psi increase, I'd guess 222-223 for pole. With it, more like 225-226.

Let's be honest. It's a PR ploy so they can get eyeballs for the race. Helio qualifies as 217. Average viewer says "cool" and doesn't care they turn the boost down and run 205 top on race day.

It's less than that. They can't afford to be standing around with their pants around their ankles having promoted a new car and ending up slower than Scheisswagon 2.0 even with all the new swoopy bodywork.

They look slow, they're not twitchy, the engine sounds NA-ish because of low revs/V6...not quite the grunt of the V8's. Meh...

None of it is appetizing. :thumdown:

I long for the days of true turbo whine echoing through the canyons of speed and the winds of burnt methanol swirling about. That was racing for me, I shall never forget.

The day after experiencing his first serious dose of the tow the new Dallara DW12 chassis creates around Indianapolis, the Frenchman was awe-inspired by the Hanford Device-like effect the car has for those traveling in its wake....

"It sounds great having a big draft behind these cars, but you lose so much downforce on the front of the car. Way more than before."

If the two Dragon cars get on track, the 500 will have its 33 car-and-driver combinations. Because no more competitors are expected, IndyCar officials are devising a plan to spice up Sunday's Bump Day.

Details are still to be finalized, but the concept is to award a $5,000 bonus to the fastest driver at the top of each hour.

This coud prove to be extremely dangerous on race day when all the cars will be on track. IndyCar should play it safe and not start 33 this year. :tony:

Has a single positive thing been said about the the DW12 at IMS?


Barfield said it was "unlikely" that cars at the low end will be denied a chance to start the 500, but they'd better not lag behind after the green flag

Sure let them in, because they will find 20mph between qualifying and the race? Maybe Mario can qualify the two-seater to fill out the field??

Yep. Miller quickly summed it up with a comment that they need 1000hp and described a recent conversation with Will Power where Power agreed they need to get back to lifting/breaking in the turns at Indy (or needed major balls not to)

While lifting/breaking is most likely correct give the probable design crew I'm sure that Power would greatly prefer lifting/braking:p

Regardless by my calculations the new IRL spec has a power to weight ratio of .335

The Vette at 3300# and 638 hp is .19.

OK so that's not as good. But it seats two, has a roof, trunk, HVAC, stereo, head/road lights and mufflers, etc. And a license plate.

I mean, Really!?!

It doesn't even use a turbo. ;)

If the cars had 1000 hp this year how many drivers in the field this year would be able to drive them?

And even some of the better ones are so used to less hp (from the IRL days, esp.) that I think those who SHOULD be able to handle it, might struggle.

That said, I think 1000 hp is a pipedream. For r/s courses, no problem. But for ovals (esp. IMS, Fontana and either Pocono or MIS), the amount of df you'd have to lop off would be significant, likely unrealistic. We hit 241 at Fontana 12 yrs. ago, with Hanford and, I'm sure, far less df than today. Give 'em 700-750 hp, trim SOME df off, and be done w/ it.

On the tow issue, we'll see. Seemed fine in happy hour yesterday.

So, after watching happy hr. yesterday (some of the craziest stuff I've seen), I can say this: The tows are massive, probably +4-5 mph per lap! If stability is an issue, it won't matter b/c a) even at the low hp level, they still have better throttle response than last yr. and b) the draft is so strong that you can make up lost distance in a hurry. In other words, if you liked the Hanford races, well, you'll like the 500 (http://www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com/indy500/news/show/type/news/51710-remembering-the-handford-device/) (BTW: Is Oreo writing for IMS too?).

I think it overstates it a bit; passing won't be THAT easy at IMS. Whether this is good, I dunno.

The Loti will almost have to be start-and-parks. They're 15 mph off the top pace.

This embarassment destroys their credibility and most likely what sponsorships they would have had left...I think they are DONE.

I kind of think they'll stumble through the rest of the season but it would not surprise me if they don't make it that far.

This is pure speculation on my part, but given all the gnashing of teeth that Chevy and Honda have been through picking up the slack after Lotus fell on their collective face, I could envision a scenario where they strike a deal to run one extra car each on Sunday and try to kill Lotus off for good by knocking them entirely out of the field.

Yes it does. Butttttt.... Lotus/Judd is so far behind, it might not matter, they're down to ONE FT car, and none of it solves the Indy problem.

Like Ed, my preference is for Honda and/or Chevy, plus two teams, to put the Lotudds out of their misery. If not, just blackflag them by Lap 10 and be done with it

My point was... the best they could do ... was 227.... in the draft.
