This is what the internet is supposed to be,

http://www.nytimes.com/projects/2012/snow-fall/?smid=fb-share#/?part=tunnel-creek

It is an incredible story put together in a stunning fashion.

I have an ultra-fast internet connection and that was annoying.

If I was on cable or DSL, I would have given up and possibly punched my monitor.

Cool, but...

I noticed that yesterday and am going to read it this weekend, but I don't recall a paper ever doing such a great job of layout and graphics in an on-line piece.

Cool, but...

My connection is mediocre and it worked fine.

What a beautifully produced story. More of this, and they might become more successful with digital subscriptions.

Cool, but...

I have a sub-par DSL connection and it worked just fine.

OK, I had time since my original post to read this more carefully (twice) and it is even better then I originally thought. Some of the video is pretty stunning, like Pankey's head cam when they are at the debris pile and he flips his beacon to search and it it immediately screams and his head jerks up in such a way that you can practically hear him thinking "holy s---, someone is below me". And the audio, pics and graphics are just great.

Well I guess this story ran as a 14 page supplement in the Sunday NY Times.

Note at the end it is available as an e-book and when you click over to it, it appears this is the first project they are doing this with. Assuming the e-book functions like the online article, can you imagine an e-book of something like McPhersons' Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era set up like that?

By the way comments are approaching 1200 on that article and if you go to them and sort as to NY Times recommend and the NY Times responses there is some interesting additional stuff in their, particularly from the author and Elyse Saugstad, the woman who survived after being swept away in the avalanche.

Oh, and Pulitzers are awarded on a calender year basis. I am sure that it is just a coincidence this came out in the last 10 days of the year.

The video tidbits had a few glitches but otherwise it worked fine. It's an excellent melding of video, stills, and print media. I believe THIS is the direction that newspapers will have to take in order to survive.

And what do you know, it wins a Pulitzer for best feature writing. (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/16/business/media/2013-journalism-pulitzer-winners.html?ref=media)

Here is a link to the Pulitzer page announcing the prize.
