View Full Version : Holy (Daytona Accident Merged)
I hope no fan was hurt. I thought the driver was a goner. Half the car is gone.

Car just went into the catch fencing at Daytona in the Nationwide series. The driver is fine, and it looks like no spectators injured, but the still smoking engine is outside of the fence on the sidewalk. Looks like they dodged a bullet on this one.

Bad...
Went bottom of the car first
I'm gonna delete my thread below if I can.
That was scary!

Although they are saying they don't have any word, the talk and post race winners circle is very muted...
Hopefully if anyone was injured it's just minor.

The response by the drivers and ESPN leads me to believe that there are spectators injured, unfortunately.

Just showed a replay from a different angle, it appears that a wheel assembly went into the stands.

I saw that wheel assembly take flight, too.
Jeff Gluck from USA Today is reporting that backboards are getting sent up to the upper deck of Daytona. That's a heck of a long way for debris to fly.
It looks like it (tire) hit the starter stand first. Someone is saying the helicopters are landing on pit road.

This is horrible; I have a sick feeling about this. I truly hope I am wrong.

Surprised by the close-up camera shots of the motor and apparently lack of track personnel working any injured personnel. Lots of PD standing guard though. Hopefully nothing too serious.
Oh - and :flame: 'cause this was long overdue to happen. Hopefully Stewart calls them out on this.

Someone just told me the engine flew into the stands too. I guess we'll find out later tonight.

Usa today: A tire came over the fence, and a lot of debris came up into the stands, where safety crews were working on at least five people, including four who were strapped to backboards. And at least two people were injured in the upper deck.Safety crews and police have closed off the area, escorting fans out of the area.

Finishing a race upside down, backwards, and on fire is a hat trick in Nascar.
Hopefully, no one is permanently damaged. :(
Pretty big hole in the catch fence.

This is so stupid on so many counts: Governing bodies are supposed to protect drivers, crews, fans; not set up scenarios to hurt them.
1) Restrictor plate racing is stupid, we all know that! Why continue making rules that cause accidents, isn't it supposed to be the other way around. Imagine if FIA had a rule to cause more crashes in F1; like they turn sprinklers on in the middle of a few corners during the first few laps.
2) Green-white-checkers or red flagging the race for a 2-lap shoot-out is an accident waiting to happen. I told my son; watch there is going to be a crash. No way that there was not going to be a crash. :shakehead
3) Having Cup drivers in lower Nascar races that treat the races like they're indoor kart track races is another recipe for disaster. Keselowski is a world class fool; he punted Smith out of the way because to him crashing or finishing second is the same thing. No points, nothing to loose, what does he care? Indoor kart track style! Again, imagine if IRL or F1 had drivers racing GP3 or F.Mazda's during the weekend. They wouldn't treat it seriously.....:saywhat:
Nascar is stupid, and I guess that's the way they want it.

The video Mary linked has been pulled down by NASCAR.
I don't understand how can NASCAR claim copyright infringement on a fan video shot on a cell phone from the stands? I can understand blocking those that upload ESPN footage, but not a fan video. Or is that covered in the ticket disclaimer these days?

The ticket disclaimer covers it.

Good to know. I may have to actually read the back of the ticket at the next sports event I attend.

This, my friends, is why you never sit close to the track at a superspeedway.
I remember going to the daytona 24 about 5 years or so ago. they have security patrolling the walkway along the catch fence just to keep people away, in case this sort of thing happens. You couldn't pay me to be one of those security people.

The video Mary linked has been pulled down by NASCAR.It is in the Sfgate link in gnam's post. Pretty awful.
NASCAR is pulling stuff down as fast as they can.
We have been saying for years a car will wind up in the stands and today it came half true. Thankfully no one died but the critical injuries are apparently head injuries (which people dont always fully recover from) and one is a minor. NASCAR may have dodged a bullet today. For the injured fans lets hope so.
Nuck FASCAR. They are cynical bastards who push a phony product on fools. They have nothing but contempt for their customers.

I was concerned about the TV cameraman who was working at the point of impact. He seemed to disappear into the debris.
But thankfully he dived just out of the way and is fine. His camera not so much.

No kidding, three seats. NASCAR will make sure it disappears soon.

No, no, no. NASCAR was worried about violating the privacy of the victims. :shakehead
At least YouTube told NASCAR to take a hike and restored the video.

I was so glad last night to hear that none of the spectators had life-threatening injuries (even the two who were critically injured).
NASCAR, which I have long felt was something like the Teflon Series, dodged a big bullet here. Somebody needs to tell Joie Chitwood III that their protocol didn't exactly work perfectly, IMO. Their emergency response procedures did, but the car went through the fence. Even so, the fence did a good enough job that the engine didn't go further into the stands once it tore through. Moving seats back (some computer simulation can give them a reasonable distance) will help a lot, but it won't do anything about a flying tire, which I have to say I don't recall seeing in stock cars in that situation.
Any open wheel fan must have been a little freaked seeing that tire in the seats in the infamous up, then down, then back up video we're all talking about.
I hope the 500 goes without major incident today.
Mary
As we know from some spectator tragedies in open wheel, you can never move the seats far enough back for guaranteed safety and still offer a good experience for the fans. But I think most speedways are planned to put the most seats in at the least cost rather than for safety. Safety is based around building taller and heavier fences. Hopefully that will change. Seems like a few of the speedways could use a good excuse to take seats out.

Reno's air race insurance went from 500k to 2million after the crash in 2011. I wonder what would happen if this crash had a similar fatal outcome and what the per event insurance would be?

Which is why they will probably gladly pay far more to fight it than they would to settle.
And because they appear to be shameless scum.
