We're all hard wired, so I just change them when they chirp, so they are all over the map on replacements. Bad poopie? I used to change them during the time change, but some units just went south sooner on the batteries. Prolly time to change them out since they are 10 years old, but there are more pressing needs for the house right now. :saywhat: What I need to do is to get the damn things to fit into the brackets instead of dangling from the ceiling. :irked:

My smoke detectors are hard wired with a battery backup. They also have a replace battery beep. Is this advice/rule of thumb intended for purely battery powered smoke detectors?

Any smoke detector with batteries should have them swapped at least annually. They don't recharge in the units and #1 they won't work if the power goes off and #2 (more likely) will give you a low battery chirp at 2AM.

Some newer detectors have 10yr lithium batteries.

AND, more importantly, you should really replace the detector once it is 10 years old. The become wonky and troublesome after 10 years.

Side note - your detector contains Americium 241, a radioactive element. Detectors should not be tossed in the garbage, but actually returned to the mfg. or sent to household hazardous waste colelction.

Or ~3am after a The Who concert, when my ears were bleeding (outdoor show to boot), and I was a bit wobbly...after just moving into the house like 3 weeks before. ;) But yes they always seem to go off after midnight. :saywhat: Stupid fire guys. ;)
