I managed to turn on that interview of that guy on live TV here in Cleveland when I got home from work without any idea of what was going on or why they were interviewing him, although part of the way in it hit me "they must have found Berry or DeJesus!!!!"
Got to give it to the parents of both of them, they never gave up trying to keep the story in the news. I couldn't help but think everytime I saw them that they were just denying reality, and I couldn't be happier being wrong about something.

My initial reaction is “south of downtown, its west of downtown” but in looking at the map I guess technically it is although it is on the West Side and more or less all of downtown is technically on the East Side.
As an initial disclaimer, for someone who grew up in a lily white high income suburb (and continue to live in one, though much more mixed ethnicities then of my youth) I am not anywhere like the typical person of my age and background who seems to have an aversion to anything central city and seem to be stuck thinking its 1993 and there are gun battles on every street corner 24/7 (crime rates have dramatically dropped in the last 20 years).
That area they are talking about is squarely in an older part of town that is very working class and almost certainly ends up near the bottom of reported income per capita in the county, but for the most part not badly kept, all things considered, close to the newest major shopping center in the city (less than 10 YO) and two neighborhoods that have been trendy places to move back to, Tremont and Ohio City. The Euclid corridor has more vacant lots and perhaps some of the housing stock is more run down then this area. It's a typical bustling older neighborhood.
By the way, since I first came to town in 83 the Euclid corridor has really improved with new housing and buildings going in, including the ever expanding Clinic. If you take a long view its an area that turned a corner some years ago.
Can't imagine the joy of the reunited families. The pure evil that preceeded it makes me sick.
The brothers are innocent until proven guilty. They deserve a fair trial followed by a public execution.

Most states have a mechanism for people who didn't get a birth certificate for whatever reason. In this case the required legal background checks will be done by the DA's office for free as part of their prosecution. It will be the easiest thing of the entire mess to fix.

Sadly I am pretty sure there are more that a few girls/women in a similar situation right now. And it is a new thing. Women have been kept as slaves for centuries but since slavery was abolished on the planet this shat has mostly but apparently not completely stopped. I just doubt you could have pulled this crap off 40+ years ago before people retreated to their homes and the anonymity of their multimedia entertainment.

My favorite factoid is that when the police got the girls they got a description, name, description of his car and in pretty short order he drives by some squad car with his one brother riding along and pulls into a McDonalds. Cop goes up to him and one of the brothers says “you sure you are not looking for our other brother” Cop: “where is he” Castro brother: “Mom’s – over on such and such avenue”. (By the way, my impression is that when this happened they had no idea why the cops were looking for one of them).
So they arrest the two brothers and then the third one they ratted out at mom’s for good measure. The two brothers not charged today looked pissed at the arraignment and did not say one word to the one who was charged (they were there on 2 totally unrelated charges from the past).
One thing is this guy’s family have been tripping over each other to get in front of microphones to apologize to the victims and their families. The guy’s mom (in Spanish, so a Telemundo reporter ended up being her translator for the rest of the press), son and daughter (on Good Morn. Am. today) and a bunch of brothers, sisters, cousins and the like. So far he has got zero presumption of innocence from his family.

The defendant’s statement at sentencing is an opportunity to get things into the court record that wouldn’t have otherwise been included.
I don’t think an appeal will be made soon, and I don’t think it will be successful, but I think Castro’s lawyers told him to make the statements about his mental condition and problem with pornography.

That doesn't happen that much anymore. Dahmer got a form of prison justice, but this is rare these days.

Castro, who was scheduled to go on trial Aug. 5, agreed to a plea deal that will put him in prison for life without parole, plus a minimum of 1,000 years, and take away any rights to appeal his conviction or sentence.
"He's never coming out [of prison] except nailed in a box or in an ash can," Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy J. McGinty said after the hearing.
The extra time on top of the life sentence "is largely symbolic" and "an expression of the communty's outrage, said Joe Frolik, spokesman for McGinty.
His piling up of serious crimes against those 3 women over a period of 10+ years added up to 1000 years of punishment. They just rounded the number to something astonishing so the public would better understand the magnitude of his crimes. My guess is he will likely be kept in solitary to prevent what many of us are hoping for but in the meantime we pay for the food, health care, HD TV, clothing, laundering, bedding, reading material...He has his life but I hope he NEVER experiences liberty or happiness again.
The coward was found dead in his cell tonight. They say he hung himself.

I just love how the local news raced people in the dark down to Columbus to stand outside the prision that guy died in, in the dark, to tell us what happened. God I hate the local news. They could have saved gas just by doing their live shots outside a Taco Bell in Parma instead.
Oh, and if I had to live in Columbus I would hang myself as well. ;)

I know what you mean. With property values coming back in Columbus it's tough to find a reasonably priced place with enough space for your captives AND some place to bury the bodies. Still, we aspire to our own "bat *** crazy" thread. :)
