View Full Version : Where were you . . . .
. . . 50 years ago today?
I was in shop class in Garden City Junior High.
How many Off Camber members had been born when JFK was assassinated?
4th grade Ada S. Hawkins Elementary school
The world changed on that day.
We were no longer Ward and June Cleaver.

I was also in elementary school. I remember our teacher being quite upset and I think we got an early recess. Even as young kids we discussed the assassination on the playground.
I was only three but I do have a dim memory of the funeral on the black and white TV.
I had just turned two so I have no memory of it.

I was 2 years old and home with mom who was waiting for the TV repairman to show up since the TV was broke, so she had no idea what had happened. When the TV repairman told her "did you hear the President was killed" she chewed him out for such a tasteless comment (thinking he was not being serious).
Of course I don't remember any of it.
(PS, With The Beatles was released 50 years ago today as well)

I would have been running around playing with blocks or something of the sort. I have no memory of it.
One and a half at the time. Either eating my Gerbers or napping.

My parents were in grade school, so needless to say I have no memory. Although, your mother's reaction to the TV repairman was essentially the same reaction I had to my roommate's sister when she called my dorm room about September 11th (I was still asleep).

Last night was a special on PBS that compared the TV vs print coverage - the competition between reporters, the confusion, etc.

I was in first grade, and clearly remember when the school principal announced the shooting and then the death of President Kennedy over the PA system. Our young teacher slumped over her desk with her head pillowed on her arms, overwhelmed by grief. We went outside for recess, but instead of playing, we sat quietly on the ground next to the pyracantha bushes, speaking in hushed tones about the president and how badly we felt for his young family (Caroline was exactly our age). I remember watching the funeral later on, while my mother explained the symbolism of the riderless horse. It all made quite an impression on my young self. :(

Monday Morning Breslin.
I got to run and don't have time to find it but the last couple of days I have seen a column of his where he talks to and about the guy who worked for Arlington who had to dig the grave (guy made $3.01 an hour). It was pretty good as well.

NPR (http://www.npr.org/blogs/deceptivecadence/2013/11/21/246551876/hear-what-happened-at-bostons-symphony-hall-after-jfks-assassination) posted the recording of the Boston Symphony and crowd reacting to JFK's passing. Very moving.
I saw/heard the Orchestra bite. My first reaction was how clueless Bostonians had to be to get word of the assassination 8 hours after of the fact. Then it dawned on me that it was an afternoon concert.
The gasps from the audience were haunting.

First grade. I remember arriving at school and the teacher told us we were to go home.
I waited for the dust to settle, then I was born on the 25th...happy 50th birthday to me :D

^ I hear you. I was just a few months into gestation, so it didn't seem like that big a deal to me at the time.
