Wow. Discovery had a show (or maybe it was a series) about what would happen to places if people were to disappear. Between arson, theft, and vandalism it looks like things deteriorate about 10 times faster if people don't disappear.

But the real people disappeared first. This absolutely heartbreaking to me. Especially the images with neatly kept homes that disintegrated in a mere 4 years. :shakehead:

Yeah, that's the saddest part. You can see people trying to maintain in the face of all that desolation and eventually fall victim to it. There's one where they obviously put up some new fencing to try and have some security and in the next shot it has been ripped down and then in the next the property has been burned.

Stuck throttle, apparently.
Just my personal rant, but dual throttle return springs are a total no-brainer for any modified car. Maybe that's what he was going to Autozone for.

I don't mean to turn this into the junkyard thread, but here's another wreck. ;)

The photos below come from a friend of a friend at Southwest Airlines. Apparently, 2 of the planes in the river were theirs. The source also claimed there were a total of (8) wrecked planes.

Crews pulling plane fuselages from Montana river after train derailment

Three 737 airplane fuselages that slid down a steep embankment into the Clark Fork River following a train derailment in western Montana could take until Tuesday to remove, railroad officials said Sunday.

Six fuselages were aboard a westbound train when 19 cars derailed Thursday about 10 miles west of Alberton. The three remaining plane sections also fell off but stayed on land. No one was injured in the derailment, which is under investigation.

Wow. We spotted one of these trains during our Yellowstone trip a while back and were surprised to find that the shipped entire fuselages that way. That train had just a couple of planes on it, to put eight on one train and then have it derail... wow.

I wonder if the carrier is on the hook for the loss or if Boeing somehow insures it.

Someone will be on the hook for this, but it's going to take awhile to find out who...

Frost of Montana Rail Link said insurance considerations won't be decided until the investigation is complete. She said the train was traveling well under the 35 mph speed limit for that section of track.

I would have thought they would be more careful with those things.

If they are able to salvage any of the fuselages, and they end up becoming airplanes, will passengers know that the aircraft they’re flying on has been “pre-crashed”?

Montana Crews To Attempt To Recover Boeing Fuselages After Train Wreck
Crews will attempt to remove three fuselages from the steep bank into which they fell after 19 train cars derailed off tracks and into the Clark Fork River in Western Montana. A spokesperson for Montana Rail Link said it's unclear the type of challenge involved because it's the first time the company has faced such a task. No one was injured when 19 cars from a westbound train derailed Thursday about 10 miles west of Alberton. The cause of the derailment is under investigation. The train carried six fuselages. Three others also fell off but stayed on land. Frost says Boeing has had workers at the scene assessing the damage. The fuselages were headed to Renton, Washington, to be assembled into completed airliners.

The auction earned $10.24 million, which will be used to build a museum in Stow, Massachusetts for some of the remaining vehicles.

Well, it's indoors and those balloons (and airships!) have a bunch of mass so they're not exactly bobbing around in there.

The building still stands- it's the Grand Palais on the Champs-Élysées, big one in the center.

Europeans put nice cars in holes.

Even if you don’t have a particularly large driveway, Cardok can literally double the amount of parking space that you have, as well as to ensure that your car is the most secure its ever been. The basic Cardok model is made as a two-vehicle lift. You just have to simply park your car on top of the platform and then press a button on a remote control to raise it, revealing another platform.

Below this platform lies a parking space underground that can fit any sized car. Once you park a car on the additional platform, press the button to lower it again, and your car is then completely hidden, with the first one resting on top.

Price range: $61,000 to $72,000

As for the garages Gnam's posted I can't help thinking that if parking is precious the area is too congested to bother having a car, let alone that nice of car.

Slightly out of line for this thread, but a week or two ago my son was driving to school. Our neighborhood streets are a sheet of ice as is common when they're plowed by individuals instead of the city. Son is going around the outside of a corner, girl comes at him too fast, can't slow down, slides right into him and they both end up in someone's yard. Airbags, totaled car, plenty of damage to the other.

Girl happens to be my son's girlfriend... who had gone to get doughnuts before school to bring them to him.

Fast forward to today, he took lots of the pieces of the cars we gathered out of the yard they ended up in and used them for this:

Yikes.

I was in the area when Mt. St. Helens blew, saw a similar effect. At first we thought it was just a colossal thunderstorm, since we couldn't see the mountain (which no longer existed)...

We used to pass this business on a regular basis (banner in the background). I always wondered how you pronounce that. I've never bothered to check because that would spoil it.

Taken a few blocks from where I live. The pipe is a nice touch.

I like that the guy in the right rear appears to be driving something completely different, like a lawnmower or something.

I am not a serious photographer by any means - but now and then something catches my eye.

Last weekend I was out to teach a class in Lancaster County (Amish country). It's a strange system out there - and not fully sure how it all works with the Amish and the "English". But the Amish are extremely active with the local volunteer fire departments. They are excellent firefighters and extremely dedicated to the community.

I saw this when I first arrived at the firehouse. I think it sums up their dedication.

Took a family trip to Montreal last month. Emmo was insistent on bringing his scooter so he could ride on the F1 track. We forget it, so had to stop at Le Mart de Wall :D and buy him one.

He was thrilled to find evidence of the race still visible on track. Here he is exiting pit lane:

The ISS probably would have caught it, too, if it were in the proper position over China.
