Last weekend I was out to teach a class in Lancaster County (Amish country). It's a strange system out there - and not fully sure how it all works with the Amish and the "English". But the Amish are extremely active with the local volunteer fire departments. They are excellent firefighters and extremely dedicated to the community.

There is a decent number of Amish near me (Ohio has the largest Amish population in the US) with a decent size community not to far to the east of me which I drive through now and then, and an even larger one (perhaps the largest in the US) about an hour and a half south/west and west (much of it not to far south of Mid-Ohio). As an aside, last weekend I biked with a group in that area on a "Rails to Trails" trail that actually has one half dedicated to Amish buggies the other to your typical walk/jog/bike use (including, of course, Amish bikers and the Amish kids who like their foot powered scooters).

Anyway, maybe 10 years ago I was giving blood and two of the workers were engaged in shop talk when one mentioned she had worked a collection in Middlefield, dead center in the Amish community to the east, so I asked "I just know your answer is going to be one extreme or the other, but how good is the Amish participation rate?"

Of course it was very good.

All sorts of interesting people in their family photos, I'd bet. (Not FDR's, though this one sort of disproves that).

I wonder if Elvis Costello has a copy of that one. :tony:

Data,

What is the backstory to that picture?

datachicane
06-22-16, 08:53 AM
Mosley was a bit of a political opportunist in his early days, switching parties on occasion. This was taken in 1926, when he was a Labour MP, having previously lost his seat as a Conservative. FDR invited him on the Florida fishing trip.

In trying to find the background I found other photos from the trip that claim that it's actually Oswald's 1st wife, Cynthia, which would be more plausible than then 12 year old Unity, especially given that Unity was supposedly only introduced to Mosley by her sister (Mosley's eventual 2nd wife) in 1932.

Napoleon
06-22-16, 09:21 AM
Timeline is wrong for that to be Unity. The woman looks somewhat like her, but not exactly.

FDR sure loved his boating.

Speaking of which, I finished a bio of FDR recently which had a picture of him walking (this was pre-polio) out of the Brooklyn Naval Yard after participating in the laying of the keel of the Arizona. About half the battleships at Pearl Harbor 12/7/1941 were FDRs babies built while he was Assistant Sec. of the Navy (FDR was very pro-build up of the Navy and pressed for the ships, unlike others in Wilson's administration). It struck me when I read that that among all the other things that must have gone through his head that day how personal that must have been for him to have the Japanese send his navy to the bottom.

These are not the picture I mention, but both were taken that day at the laying of Arizona's keel.

I didn’t know FDR had been Assistant Sectary of the Navy like his second cousin Teddy.

I had known that (college history major, with an emphasis on modern American history) but for all my post graduate history reading (I don't have a postgraduate history degree) I did not circle back to that era until now. FDR pretty clearly wanted to be President from when he was young, and took Uncle/Cousin Teddy as his template. Anyways, he was actually, for the day, pretty internationally hawkish for an American, and he was way more supportive of an expanded navy then the sec of the navy at that time or Wilson. He was a big navy guy.

By the way, the navy thing connected him with Churchill, who held a similar position with the British government.

The name does not mean to imply an adult nature of the photos, it just means that they are photos. Of history.

I was buzzed by a hungry hummingbird a few weeks ago. I was on the deck at a friends' house and apparently I was between him and the feeder. He passed by me at the distance of about a foot. That was pretty amazing.

Yup. Ike set the stage for the space race, and learned from the Germans when he used the Autobahn during the drive to Berlin. Much like Teddy Roosevelt, he doesn't get the respect he deserved. :\

A close agent friend just came back Sunday from a highfalutin' conference where Hawaii (Island) Visitors Bureau folks were well represented. She asked them how it was. They said, and I quote, "Bad. It's bad. But we can't say much because people think 'Hawaii' means Oahu, and Maui, and Kauai too and we can't ruin the tourism for the whole state." If the TOURIST board people are saying it's bad, it's BAD.

A highly valued coworker with whom I've worked very closely for going on 15 years is from Mariupol. She has family there. I can't imagine the horror.

The irony is, in spite of all of Putin's posturing about the invasion being necessary to ensure the safety of Russian-speaking peoples in Ukraine, she and her family, as well as many of her friends in Mariupol, are those very ethnic Russians he professes to be concerned about as he shells their escape corridors from the city.
