Data, crap like that just makes northern Yankees like me just smack our heads and wonder if that whole civil war thing was worth it. Sorry if I offend but I don't need one more person asking unsolicited and completely out of the blue (when I am in a red state) how my state could have "elected that man", as if I am somehow responsible or that it is polite conversation. Meanwhile their state lags behind the entire developed world in almost every category and they think that is just OK.
I meet stupid everywhere. No region has a monopoly but I swear sometimes I wonder if local water can up the dumb and proud gene.
Sorry bosses that I almost surely crossed the line. I am done now.i will try to find a relevant pic for the thread. And not a selfie. :gomer:

Only problem with that photo is that you are looking at an AP story but headlines are typeset locally. As the photo's provenance is lost to the internet that headline could have come out of the Bangor Daily News for all that any of us know. Just saying'....

Yeah but Mississippi literacy is and has long been about 16%. Maine (and Utah ;) ) is about 6-7%. That is why Mississippi literacy is a news item and Maine is not. And this is not a hard problem to solve if you actually want to solve it. That, not the typo, is what I am really bugged about.
Ok I said I was done and I am.

Here’s a link to a federal government site which shows literacy rates by state and county. The statistics are ten years old. As pointed out in a footnote, the reason some of the people who scored below the minimum standard was a language barrier.

Had a chance to tour the collection. Sad to see they are parting it out. At one point, they were trying to open a museum. Although, I doubt his family had the same level of interest. ;)
I remember a story about the SCUD missile launcher. The tour guide said when it showed up on the Oakland docks, the custom guys freaked out and impounded it. Littlefield tried to explain that the weapon was inert and he was allowed to own it, but they wouldn't listen. He said, "Fine. Call me when you get tired of pushing it around your impound lot, and I'll come get it." A year later they called, "Please remove your rocket." :D
The funny part was the collection was in the heart of Portola Valley, which is where all the titans of Silicon Valley live. But, since he bought his property years before Silicon Valley even existed, the neighbors couldn't complain when he'd run his tanks and make a racket.
The one thing the tour guide kept reinforcing over and over was that being in a tank was a horrible way to spend a war. "You'd die a horrible death in this one. Oh! Being in this one was even worse!"
The family said "Tanks, but no tanks."
