The nose you see is not the nose that will race evidently

“Our nose is a launch spec and later we will have an updated front end of the car, which potentially is quite different.

What is up with the noses, especially the Williams? Looks like his cousin. http://tinyurl.com/kphyugv

Figured Sauber would change the livery this year. While the color looks fantastic (and did last year) under professional lighting, it didn't look nearly as good on the track -- kind of dull and drab.

Okay how is it that the Merc's wing extends out in front of the nose when every other car has the wing behind the nose extensions?

You would think that all that mass on the Caterham's front wing would cause some significant drag. It looks like a pair of box cheese graters bolted onto the wing.

Cars are a good 7 seconds slower than last year at Jerez. And the only car that seems to consistently work is Nico Rosberg's.

7 seconds?

Where will that put them with a GP2 sled?

I won't be so lazy. I checked GP2 for 2013 and saw times at 1:25.059. I see Button for 2014 at 1:24.165.

Well that's it, season's over! Day 1: Kimi fastest, Ferrari on top. The ugly Ferrari works. Only 8 secs. slower than last year! (Newey also worried about the low noses in rear ender wrecks.) And that F14T nose...we HAVE seen that before, right? Not the DROP snout, just the snout. Can't quite place it, was it F-1 or F-5000? Quite awhile ago. BRM? Shadow? An Aussie F-5000...a Matich maybe? Doesen't mean anything, just found it familiar.:)

Let's not be too hasty even if the cars aren't. They will be significantly different animals once they get to Oz and probably be within a second or two of last year's proven platforms.

Speaking of radical things in Australia, OW...and sorry if this is the wrong place for this, but Ford and GM (and Toyota!) are pulling OUT!...of the whole COUNTRY!? How might that affect the V-8 Series, let alone the 50,000 (?) or so people working in the industry there? Have to say, I'm a little stunned by that news. Do Holden (GM) and Ford (Au) remain in production, or what? The result of a "strong currency" ? An interesting story to follow.

Given the current government aren't even 5 months old (and parliament has only just resumed after about a 10 week break) to blame them for anything is completely insane. Ford announced their withdrawal well before the election, Holden almost immediately afterward. Toyota was always about face saving. Toyota sought an injunction through the Fair Work Australia commission to force the unions to renegotiate wages and the unions basically blocked it with the direct result that the company pulled out (http://www.afr.com/p/national/union_conditions_behind_toyota_exit_ZEytth3H2gVKnE SNIooPWI). Aside from excessive wages (a bog standard car assembler was taking home 70k+ overtime, as a flight instructor I take home 45k with no overtime or entitlements), energy costs are exorbitant largely thanks to renewable energy targets and a monumentally useless carbon dioxide tax (which the current government can't repeal until the new senate comes in around July). Add to that the fact that they stopped making cars which Australians were actually interested in, next to no export market and competition from 57 other car manufacturers in a market of just over 1 million cars they were stuffed. When the previous government announced fringe benefits taxes on work car lease programmes (was never legislated) the demand for Australian made cars dropped around 33% over night. Australian car manufacturing is also the most heavily subsidised per vehicle anywhere in the world.

The truth is that car manufacturing in this country started deteriorating in the 1980s when the Button plan was mandated.

Nick Chester (Lotus Tech Director) has said that data is proving their twin tusk nose as the correct solution because while they do get less total air flow, channeling it directly down the middle is creating higher total downforce.

However, Gary Anderson wrote that this almost certainly comes at the expense of control over shifting airflows. That deficiency is what McLaren has determined caused their terrible 2013; a front wing with fewer elements can create more total downforce but when airflow starts shifting through the corners the wing loses efficiency.

This certainly doesn't condemn the Lotus but still an interesting vagary of F1 aero.

Chester also acknowledges that given Lotus' staff departures, most of the top teams had enough time to at least investigate the twin tusk. If Renault doesn't get their act together, it may not matter.

http://racer.com/index.php/f1/item/101397-lotus-twin-tusk-nose-advantage-clear

Can't remember where I read McLaren's assessment of their 2013 car.
