Surprised that this hasn't been put up before. Maybe you're all too young? His music, his integrity (whether or not you agreed with him), and his influence, were boundless. RIP, Pete.

An American music icon and a man who lived (and suffered for) his ideals. Godspeed Pete.

This aired on the CBC a few years back and was rerun last night. Worth a listen (~55m).

I am surprised how much of my view of what America is all about and should be came from Seeger songs I heard as a kid.

I was lucky to see him perform a few years back, surprisingly or not in front of a few hundred people at a county park summer music series thingy.

Bruce Springsteen has been channelling him for years.

At the risk of getting all political this is also a big part of his history and a sad part of USA history. http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2014/01/28/pete_seeger_huac_transcript_full_text_of_anti_comm unist_hearing_courtesy.html?wpisrc=burger_bar

There's a great story about Pete and his take on the Kansas science standards, umm, "controversy" a few years back.
He paid to have a union shop (in Kansas!) print these up, handed them out at his shows, and sent a bunch to pro-science organizations in Kansas who were lobbying against the revised standards.

Some interesting remembrances in this story. Springsteen mentions that both he and Seeger were signed to Columbia by the same guy, John Hammond. For anyone interested in American music history he is one guy who was a giant, but most people have no idea who he is. He brought an amazing array of artist to the publics attention (including Seeger and Springsteen), and interestingly was fabulously wealthy as a member of the Vanderbilt family.
