Happy 100th Birthday TravelMom

Today is a remarkable day. TravelMom is 100 and feeling great. I shared a photo under the Images of Interest thread a couple of days ago when the family parties began. Today is the big bash with 102 guests arriving at 11 AM for lunch at a local restaurant.

She's still bright and funny and setting her hair at 7:30 AM so she looks glamorous by 11. Her memory isn't what it could be but she's good enough to still live in her own apartment with help only two hours every day.

Last, I have to share the funniest birthday card I think I'll ever see. "I would call you OLD, but, if you were a car....
[inside] You'd be a horse." She laughed uproariously. We all did. Happy Birthday, Mom. I love you.

Thank you guys for all your good wishes. I tell Mom about them and she is very appreciative of them.

About the party, it was a lunch on THE DAY, Tuesday. The weather was the best it's been all week. About 78 so no need to decide if you needed a coat. You didn't.

I have to tell you, every comment I've heard has been the exact same words, "Everything was perfect." We had 100 people in one of the most beautiful rooms you'll ever see. A corner with floor to ceiling windows on two sides. 13 tables of 8 so no one was squashed in. Great food (prime rib, grouper, or chicken) with very funny little meal tickets to designate who was having what. Service was fast and efficient. The cake was the piece de resistance. A full sheet with streamer and confetti icing along the sides (strands of blue, red, orange, green and yellow--hmm, it looked a lot better than it sounds) and tiny balloons on the top. The centerpieces were a sort of glittery fountain sprouting colorful 100's. (I highly recommend partycheap.com) Everyone had nametags that were large enough to read sans glasses, which helped the festive atmosphere a lot. :D

Today we opened 68 more birthday cards and about a dozen gifts. She is happily astounded and overwhelmed. It's been a great few days.

AH, I realized I was typing so fast, I blew the line on the card in the first post. "I *wouldn't* call you OLD, but if you were a car, you'd be a horse" makes a lot more sense.

It sounds like the celebration really fit the occasion. How great is it to have lived 100 years and to have so many people mark the day with her. :)

Thanks! I realized I forgot to add one of the best parts. Mom wrote a book called, "A Century of Love" about our family history from 1880 to 1980. The cover is a huge red heart. The first picture is my mother with her family in a 1914 Hupmobile. Many of the people there had bought a copy when it came out in 1985 but we decided, since that was quite a while ago and since she was a century OLD, we would put one on each chair. That was a big hit too :).
