View Full Version : The winter of our discontent...
With apologies to John Steinbeck...this winter is outta hand. I missed last year's 'polar vortex' winter in the hospital and assisted living, but damn this is nuts. We've been fortunate to miss the snow, but not the cold. Warming trend to reach 30 by the weekend, assuming the weather guys can get a forecast right for once. :saywhat: First Buffalo, then the NE, and now the south. Nuts. :irked: Video on the Today Show this AM of a guy using a snow blower on his roof in Beantown to clear the snow from it.

Just come on out to the Wasatch Mountains where it will be 60°F on Thursday...
They took down the first two of the six Ash trees that we're losing just before the arctic blast. I got a great deal on a cheap electric log splitter so I figured I'd try it out on a few pieces to make sure it was working. The thing had gone from the store to our garage but after a few hours in the garage it was already cold enough that the hydraulic fluid was too thick for the electric motor to budge. Bringing it inside for a few hours confirmed that everything works - at least at 70 degrees.

BYUman, I hate you. :p :D :p
Forecast lows the next week...-1, , 4, -1, -4, 9. :irked:
Large group of deer roaming the neighborhood raiding bird feeders looking for food. Had 11 earlier this evening including two 8 point bucks. Just now a few were back looking for more. It's tough on wildlife when it's so damned cold and all food sources are covered with snow. Looks like I need to pick up several more bags of bird seed and more shelled corn.

~3-4 years ago the Robins returned early. Late freeze. They were looking for food. Ground frozen, so they couldn't find worms. They were smacking in to cars left and right. Al Gore was no where to be found. :saywhat:
Saw an interview with a long time Boston resident. She said the blizzard of 1978 was nothing compared to this. She was smiling and didn't even curse out the reporter.
If that amount of snow fell in any city in California, there would be a mass exodus to Mexico.
Everyone would just start walking south. :p

Really? Thundersnowstorms are a big deal in MA? They aren't all that rare out here except this year when snow of any kind is all too rare:snakehead:
While the folks back east get the cold we get the heat. For a place that depends on winter snowpacks for water this is not good:
http://img.deseretnews.com/images/article/graphic/1486664/1486664.jpg
Snow conditions in the mountains are the same as they were on April 1, 2014. Snow density measurements indicate the higher elevation snowpack is on the cusp of melting.
Lower elevation snowpacks are already gone.
Only 10 of 150 U.S. Geological Survey stream gauge stations remain in "ice."
Overall, conditions are six weeks ahead of schedule.
"We are down anywhere from 10 to 40 percent relative to January conditions, and every day that we go on without a storm, we are basically dropping 1 percent a day as we go on through this whole thing,"
It is quite pleasant outside today and I wonder how much of the pleasant outside will burn this summer....
Niagra Falls be freezing...

Those shots are of the "American" falls. The "Canadian" falls are still flowing. (OT: if you're ever in Niagara Falls USA, make some time to visit Niagara Falls State Park and walk around. It's beautiful and you can get fairly close to the water.)
I'm so over this cold and snow. We haven't been above freezing in over a month. My street is now down to one way traffic because of the city's quality efforts at plowing. Snowbanks are three feet away from the curb. Can't park in my own driveway because I can't get out without almost crashing into a parked car. Yes, I'm whiny. Pass me the cheese to go with it. :)

It's going to be "interesting" when all of this snow melts. That's a whole lot of water piled up all over the place.
Monday was -3 in AM. Today was -1. That wasn't counting the windchill factor.
Yesterday, 15F felt like a regular heat wave.
As long as we don't get accumulating ice, I will be happy. Accumulating ice is bad news all around. :saywhat:

Ice damning is going to be a huge issue as the freeze-thaw cycle happens. :saywhat:
Sad that I'm looking forward to 30ish on Saturday. :irked: Not even much fun in the sun all the way down to FL. Stephanie Abrams posted the forecast lows in FL on Twitter this AM...from 25 in Jax to 41 in Miami.

Yeah the crocuses, anemones and early irises are in full bloom. The high was 46°F yesterday, the coolest day so far this month:eek: That's okay it will be in the mid 50s by lunch.

The weather out east sounds like here last winter, except with more snow. I don't know if there have been any -40F wind chills all day yet, so until that happens, the Upper Midwest is not impressed. 6 feet of snow on the ground in Boston, we are impressed, but Houghton, MI, not so much.
Updated forecast for Cbus for tomorrow...'high' of 5, low tomorrow of -12. Wind chill -30. :irked: Schools already closed for tomorrow. Of course, I'll awake tomorrow AM and the 'forecast du hour' will be adjusted to -20 actual. Can't wait for 'Canadian summer' to arrive on Sat with 30. :saywhat:
I guess there is a silver lining to this...Nappy gets to go ice fishing. ;)

I bet people have been ice fishing out near the islands in the western basin of Erie for weeks and weeks now.
It is funny to look out at the lake and all you see is what looks like a frozen desert stretching to the horizon, except for the "5 mile crib" water intake out in the lake and the occasional lost and befuddle coyote.
PS, I bet the next 48 hours takes Erie to 100% frozen.

Those are some cold temps! I would assume many of the natural gas utilities out there will be setting records today and tomorrow. Luckily, the temperatures West of Chicago are cold, but not out of the ordinary (Mini-Tif and I would have been waiting for the pre-school bus this morning at -5F if it weren't conference week), so there is ample supply available. I was shocked to see -8F in Kentucky this morning, which is unreal. I have a bad feeling there will be a lot of plumbers busy in the Southern states over the next couple days.
Dog walk at 6:11 am...-32 w/chill...short walk! Both thawing in our (south facing) living room sunspot!

No sun for three days in Nor Cal. Everyday the weather report calls for sunshine. No sun.
IMO, a drought without sunshine is a drought not worth having.

Not a cloud to be seen and 61°F. We missed the all time record high for the date by 4 degrees.
There are two veeeery distinct sides to this map and for today the left side is the right side to be.

Great Lakes ice cover on pace with 2014's almost-record year (http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-great-lakes-ice-cover-20150219-story.html)
Wednesday, the Great Lakes were 85.4 percent ice-covered, just above the 85.2 percent on Feb. 18 last year, according to the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory. With below-average temperatures predicted for at least the next week, the lakes could approach last year’s levels of 92.5 percent ice cover, the second-highest level since records began in the early 1970s.

Sadly, TWC has central and easter oHIo targeted to 8-12". The local guys are only calling for 2-4", change to mix/rain, and then another couple of inches of snow. Calling for rain in the I-95 corridor, which means the snow pack in the NE is gonna get wet and heavy. Roofs already be collapsing and ice damning, house flooding is already a biggie problem. :saywhat:

Were you aware that the Republicans in the Utardian legislature, the most red of red states, are pushing through a medical marijuana legalization bill? It only covers edibles and oil cuz smoking anything is still a sin ya know but brownies, well, no Mormon has ever turned down a brownie...
