View Full Version : New range time

Our six year old Jenn Air is ready for a sledge hammer. Some time ago the convection fan motor died and damaged the control board and now the main burner has gone wonky. At $700 for repairs I think we'd rather cut our losses and move on. Maytag was the manufacturer for the Jenn Air so we'd like to avoid them this time around.

That appears to leave GE, Whirlpool, and Frigidaire as the likely suspects. I suppose Kenmore if I get out my decoder ring and ensure that it's not a Maytag. The challenge is finding stores that have slide-ins on the floor to look over. Some makers have free standing ranges that are near equivalents but they're rarely a perfect match.

Any recommendations? A glass top and convection oven are the only must-haves, I think.

If you want to avoid Maytag then I'd avoid Whirlpool as well. They're one and the same now. I'd look at Bosch, LG or Electrolux.

[Edit] Never mind. I missed the glass top part.

Jenn Air...do not get me started. :flaming: Oh snap, you did... :gomer: We had a downdraft cook top that couldn't boil water. :irked: Replaced with a Kenmore cooktop that was 1000x times better. :gomer: Hired some unknown Chinese guys to cut out the granite counter to fit it in due to slightly larger size. They did great work and installed the unit. Jenn Air double-wall ovens...the display failed after a couple of years. Otherwise, the ovens worked fine. I presently have a GE in the house I'm renting and it works well. Glass cook top, but conventional oven. It boils water properly. :gomer: Sorry, nrc, but unless you go the EXPENSIVE Viking or Bosch route, the pickings are slim. :\

I've always been happy GE appliances

I bought a Maytag range with the house around it, so far I've replaced the gas valve in the oven and the auto-igniters on the burners require frequent polishing to keep them sparking. As a unit it rates a "Meh"

I just want to say as a tech nerd, induction stove tops seem awesome. Had GE in the last 2 houses, the range (gas) outlasted us in the first (10 years) and this one (electric) is approaching 12. (Holy crap, I've been in KS almost 12 years, I was supposed to be out of here by 2007...)

Viking. Only problem I have ever had was the oven temp needed to be recalibrated....which involved a screwdriver and an infrared thermometer. Stovetop burners still going strong after 12 years.

Thanks. I thought that was the case but the "who makes what" site I didn't show that.

I'm really concerned about going up-market seeking reliability. We thought we were doing that with Jenn Air. I don't recall if I noticed it was built by Maytag at the time.

Getting six years out of a $1600 appliance is like getting nine years out of a $2300 appliance. But how much better are the chances that the $2300 appliance will last nine years?

My first house had a gas range that was built in 1935. Aside from needing a barbecue lighter to turn it on, it worked perfectly. I should have taken it with me when I sold the house except that it weighed a ton being largely cast iron...

Running that sucker on coal would melt a few clean-air advocates' brains:laugh:

Dude, you idiots can't even grow (legal) grass. :gomer: ;)
The reports from the groundskeepers are that the sod is good. However, that was before they covered it with an NHL hockey rink last weekend.

Now that you mention it we have about a cord of wood lying in the front yard waiting to be split since they took down two of our Ash trees. I could even let her use the cheapo log splitter I got on clearance. The problem would be figuring out how to run a chimney from where our stove is.

Is there a window in the kitchen? :gomer:

Mom and Dad had a woodburning stove when I was a teenager and we did occasionally use it to cook. As long as cooking on that thing consists of making soup, s'mores or a pot of beans, I could deal with it. We could always roast hot dogs. :D
