An experiment that was an unmitigated disaster. Oh my oh my oh my.
I was looking for some cheap food to keep in the lab for when I am stuck there and don't feel like spending a fortune at the hospital cafeteria.
I don't normally partake of shelf stable microwave foods but what why not, how bad could it be?
Turns out it could be the worst "food" I have ever had in my entire life.
Hormel Compleats (see what they did there...)
Sausage Breakfast Scramble and the HomeStyle Macaroni & Cheese.
God only knows what they did to make shelf stable eggs but they are hideous. I have not idea what it tastes like other than not eggs. And the Mac & Cheese was actually mac and some sort of yellow viscous material that bore no resemblance to any cheese I have ever experienced.
It is the most wrong thing I have ever experienced. The egg thing really reminded me of cat food but I doubt any cat would touch it.
This stuff isn't just bad, it is several orders of magnitude worse than bad, shooting right past horrific and aiming directly for crimes against humanity.
**** me, I'm going back to the jar of peanut butter...

The only thing Hormel means to me is processed meat and the food thickeners my mother was forced to endure for a while. Both revolting. I feel your pain (but fortunately haven't experienced it). As a peanut butter adherent myself, I can't offer any suggestions but I await the assembled wisdom of the group.
I wouldn't even consider trying a lot of that stuff. Blah. But I must confess that the no-fridge Skyline Chili Spaghetti is better than I would have thought. You have to supply your own cheese for a proper three-way, though. I suppose you could keep a block of chedder and a grater around the lab.

EasyMac is probably the best thing you'll get outside of Ramen, and that's not saying much. Invest in good jerky, peanut butter, and ..... this is starting to sound like a preppers thread.

But Kraft is changing the M&C 'recipe'. Who knows what it will be like post-change. :\ I was joking about Ramen....it was my 'go-to' post tOSU when I was making $7/hour as a CSR @ CServe in the early 90s. Ramen & Tobasco. :) Too much sodium. Yokisoba is a bit more healthy like what chop posted. Otherwise, jerky (sodium alert) and energy bars.
Apparently Skyline is going for wider distribution for their frozen products. My brother said he saw it at a grocery store here in St. Louis. I haven't looked for it yet, since I have a few cans of Gold Star stashed for doomsday.

Instant oatmeal, pop tarts or cans of soup live in my cube. If you have fridge access, a tub of hummus can be handy.

Skyline at the grocery in the plastic shelf pack is about $3.69, I think. Not sure how much it is in the frozen department. Richard also likes frozen entrees from Kahiki, the food company owned by the family who used to own the famous Kahiki tiki restaurant in Columbus. I miss the Kahiki. :(

I get my quick Skyline fix from the nearby UDF frozen for $3.99. :D Luckily I have one not too far away across the river and through the woods... :) Hmmm, I think I know what's for dinner.... ;)

It's all about the correct chili paste. Sambal Oelek does the job for me, it should be one of the major food groups. Everything else is pretty much just a delivery system. There's a reason you can buy it in gigantic jars.

Side note....Sriracha is the newest food fad. It's everywhere (pizza, tacos, etc.). Now Ghost Peppers are appearing at Wendy's. :eek: Used to be that jalapenos were difficult to find, and then Habaneros. Wow.

Meanwhile, my local Fred Meyers no longer stocks hot Chinese mustard (I found this out when I ran out while sitting on 30lbs of Chinese bbq pork, long story) or the king of proper deli mustards, Plochman's. Bufalo Chipotle? Sorry. Extra sharp Tillamook? Nada.
Mark my words, the day is coming soon when that place will stock nothing but Flamin' Hot Cheetos and 2-liters of Mountain Dew.

Back in the day I kept my lunch in the same freezer as the 32P & 33P nucleotides. A few beta particles never hurt anyone's lunch.
I must say I don't keep my lunch in the organ storage freezer cuz that's just gross and even though it is -30°C is still has a funk to it...

These come with the sauce in a little tub inside the container so you heat it up and then mix the sauce in the pasta. Not bad. Of course you can't be particular about having your pasta perfectly cooked.
