View Full Version : Prayers for Justin
Sage Karam spins out all by himself while leading, and debris hits Justin a ways back in the pack. Ambulances are parked to block the scene and a helicopter is on the track. This ain't looking good, folks. :(
Looks like the nose cone hit his head and possibly knocked him out.
Scary situation.

Prayers for Justin.
When this car was first being tested, it came delivered rear heavy. I know they did some gearbox work to lighten that. I think they also moved the front wheels back.
Didn't they also add a bunch of ballast to the nose?

Video of the incident. There's a post-incident glimpse of Justin in the beginning, but nothing after that. Multiple Holmatro trucks were on the scene immediately. The video does not include the slomo of the debris (looks like the nose) hitting Justin, and Justin heading directly into an inside wall.

Little research and I did indeed confirm that 26 lbs of ballast is used in the nose. This article is a few years old, so hopefully that's not accurate anymore.

My thoughts are with Justin. Massa made a miraculous recovery from being in a coma after being hit with debris. I hope Justin can have the same kind of recovery.
Scary accident, but unless they put canopies on the cars, not sure what you can do about that. I know Massa has a super strong helmet he wears now, but a nosecone at 200 mph might be too much for any helmet. Probably time for some sort of partial canopy to protect the drivers from debris, to go along with the wheel bumpers. I know purists may say that is ugly, or ruins the sport, or breaks tradition, or makes these just sports cars. But I suspect some day, people will look at racing without a canopy like looking at old footage of racing without roll bars, just lacks common sense.

Ballast aside for a second, how much does an Indycar nose cone weigh? The closest measurement that I could find is that the entire aero kit has to be 46 pounds, but that figure includes all the pieces parts for the entire car.

With all due respect, I've been running this car for 4 seasons now. Nobody is running any ballast at all in the nose, much less an absurd amount like 26 pounds. It's both unnecessary and illegal.
I'm well aware that at one test, for one outing, the prototype car was run with ballast in the nose to get a read on the magnitude of the change in handling that would come from moving the weight distribution a percent farther forward -- that is the instance that Oreovicz referred to in the aforementioned article, which was published in 2011, months before anyone ever raced this car. After the results of this experiment, new front wishbones and rear wishbone mounts were manufactured that moved the weight distribution closer to 43% front and it's been that way ever since.
Let's please keep the focus on Justin in this thread.

Hey I appreciate you posting here since you actually get to turn some wrenches and are around these things all day.
When I originally found the 26lb thing, it never mentioned Indycar saying it stayed or was removed, which is why I said I was not sure if it held true or not.

Just this so far that I can find:
http://www.indycar.com/News/2015/08/8-24-Driver-Justin-Wilson-dies
IndyCar made the announcement of Wilson's passing at approximately 9 p.m. ET Monday. The sanctioning body did not take any questions about his death and said he died while surrounded by his family. Wilson is survived by his wife Julia and their two children.
"This is a monumentally sad day for INDYCAR and the motorsports community as a whole," IndyCar CEO Mark Miles said in a statement. "Justin's elite ability to drive a race car was matched by his unwavering kindness, character and humility – which is what made him one of the most respected members of the paddock. As we know, the racing industry is one big family, and our efforts moving forward will be focused on rallying around Justin's family to ensure they get the support they need during this unbelievably difficult time."
The sanctioning body said it would answer questions surrounding Wilson's death in the coming days. Much of the conversation will include asking if the series' cars can be prevented from breaking apart so easily and if canopies are a realistic alternative. The open-cockpit design of an IndyCar is a longstanding open-wheel tradition. Wilson was hit in the helmet because his head was exposed.

FIA technical director Charlie Whiting is convinced protected cockpits will one day be introduced into open-wheel racing as motorsport's governing body prepares to conduct further testing.
The death of Justin Wilson after being struck by debris from another car during the Pocono IndyCar race on Sunday has again brought the topic of open cockpits into question.
In the meantime, eliminate the debris. Don't create situations where every accident rains hundreds of pieces of carbon fiber across the track or worse into and over the stands. 12 and a half years we all learned the physics behind a piece of foam and the damage it could do, resulting in the Columbia tragedy. That was foam, a piece of foam with a speed not so dissimilar to that of the leading edge of the shuttle's wing had enough force to damage it. The same physics were at play on Sunday. Take a much heavier nose cone and here we are.
Eliminate the potential of crap flying in every direction whenever there is contact between two or more cars or the wall or the fence. The series already saw in St. Pete what can happen. That piece flew over the grandstands. Until the FIA studies the problem and determines the solution, minimize the potential. Reduce the crap on the front wings which will reduce the need to replace front wings and nose every time there is the slightest of contact. And then the nose can be affixed more securely. Look at some of the accidents this year, the amount of debris created is incredible. It is surprising that there hasn't been more collateral damage. IndyCar shouldn't try to engineer a fix. They should minimize risk, reduce potential until there is a fix. Then when the FIA has a studied solution, implement that. Not some damned gomer inspired gimmick.
