It was supposed to rain all day, and "finish" with some non-sticking flurries late today.

Snow started two hours ago (11am), it's sticking, the ground temp is almost five degrees cooler than they said it would be, and this day may end up in the 2-3" range.

I can complain about the ridiculously poor forecasting, but I'm reveling in the snow. I hope we get buried all season. :)

We got around 8-10" here. Luckily a lot of it melted, or it would be more.

Hardly scientific but when the weather is unseasonably warm for too long, when it's supposed to be winter, the ground is warmer than usual, obviously. Those are the conditions when most of the big quakes have happened. In 1994, it didn't matter that we had no heat or electricity because it was so warm the whole week.

We have an independent meteorological firm in Indy that is usually far more accurate than the TV people. This firm claims we are going to get thumped next week with snow. Everyone else says it is going to be 45 degrees and rainy.

The suspense is killing me - mostly because I have a flight on the 2nd.

Huge wx geek. It all depends on the model the wx forecaster follows. Crap, look at the NHS forecasts this season. I watch them closely because the 'rents live in Hilton Head. The Euro won out when every other model had the storms up the coast. Out to sea. :saywhat: I go back-and-forth with the local wx guys because they change the forecast from 6am to noon to 6pm to 11pm. :irked:

If I heard right on the news, they said SLC, on average, gets 9 inches a year? Really? I bet were I live there is a pretty good chance that in any given year I get at least one storm of 9 or more inches, let alone the average.

Of course I am taking a week long ski vacation early next year and its to Maine, not Utah.

That isn't correct. What the Salt Lake Airport got was record one day snow for a Dec 14th. The airport is also down in the valley right next to the lake and it is the lowest and warmest spot and gets the least snow. The airport got 9 inches while six miles northeast (and 800' higher) the Bountiful benches got 28". The valley snows have a significant lake effect which can be highly local as the winds get funneled by the mountains. You drive 20 miles along the east side of the valley today and snow totals varied between 9 and 30 inches.

Well Alta has a 48" base with 8" of fresh powder this morning with Collins, Wildcat, Sugarloaf and Sunnyside lifts running so ymmv.

I skied there in the real late, very early 90s and at the base it must have been in the 40s with sunny skies, so I left some scarfs and hats and stuff in the car, and by the time we unloaded from the chair lift at the top I swear it was 30 degrees colder and visibility had dropped to 10 feet in front of me.

Last year was a major drought. This one storm was more than we got in all of Nov, Dec, Jan & Feb last winter combined but that was absolutely abnormal.

Historic average snowfalls for downtown/airport Salt Lake City

March 6.5"
April 4.0"

Season Average is 56"

The nice thing about Salt Lake is the ski resort 30 miles from downtown will get 400" of snow while downtown will get 50". That 400" in the middle of the city garbage can stay in Buffalo.

52 degrees on Christmas Eve. This ain't right. I'm enjoying it, but its not right.

I will say that the nice weather has made the drive home from work each night that much more pleasant. There's so many more houses decorated with lights this year.

Prolly ~20 years ago when I put lights up on our first house in these temps. Went to Kroger (Krogers if yer from oHIo), and was amazed at the peeps wearing shorts...and no, I wasn't. ;)

February snows in el nino years are rare, so this was a bonus. We only got about 7 inches at my office in downtown Denver, and a little more than a foot at my house north of town.

It went south of us but central Utah got slapped. A couple towns got up to 28".

Nice thing is that storm dropped 2"-3" of water, much needed in a severe drought area.

I have been down in that area several times in the last few years and have not gotten a chance yet to visit it. Funny thing is that day (9-11-01) when they first start describing where that plane went down on the news the first thing I thought was "its going to be in Somerset" which wasn't far off the mark (I think when they first started using a location other then X miles SE of Pittsburgh they were saying Somerset before they started using Shanksville).

Maybe this summer if I go bike riding near there on the Great Allegany Passage.
