View Full Version : I want to smash the web

I am so sick of this trend in web sites where every single product site has become scrolling through giant images, each with a headline, a few sentences of marketing fluff, and a "buy now" button. Or maybe if it's something really complex a link will take you to another, nearly as useless page with maybe two paragraphs of marketing fluff before they take you to the "buy now" page.

I imagine these damn hipsters agonizing over exactly how tightly to zoom on the baby head photo while they imagine Morgan Freeman doing a voice-over of their useless pap about how life changing their kickstarter is going to be. *RAGE*

The last straw came today on HP's site. I'm researching thin clients. These are computing devices probably most commonly purchased by the pallet by large businesses. Yet HP feels it's appropriate to whisper sweet nothings in dulcet tones like I'm trying to decide on the amazing benefits of a smart thermostat. I want a detailed feature matrix by model in two clicks or YOU ARE WASTING MY TIME. :flaming:

Sigh. I'm sorry that you had to see that. :(

Is there a name for this style? Every plague needs a name. Maybe Web three point Oh I can't find any useful information on your site, maybe I'll try a competitor.

The internet used to be tool. Now, it's a place.

That's it. The Beast has a name and it is "Bootstrap."

It's actually a pretty cool framework. But don't use the default template. Like everybody else.

did a google search for "HP thin client product matrix" and got this:

http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF02d/12454-12454-321959.html?dnr=2&jumpid=in_r2515_us/en/smb/psg/psc404redir-ot-xx-xx-/chev/

One click to flexible, smart zero or zero...

so two clicks it is. :D

I actually did that. That page is out of date. It doesn't include the models I'm after and still doesn't provide the level of detail I'm looking for. I think it's a pre-split artefact.

Part of the problem in this instance is that in the HP split, thin clients ended up on the consumer side. Their entire site is in this information free, supposedly consumer friendly format. The HP Enterprise site is actually pretty good. Find the product type, check compare on some models, and get a decent comparison of features. Thank God. https://www.hpe.com/us/en/servers/rack.html

The point remains - Bootstrap is the bane of webkind. Shun it where-ever you may find it.

I was hoping that it wasn't done yet and they just changed out the stock photos. Happy lady with her groceries looks really safe and happy. Hopefully they'll update the support site to be a bit more useful soon.

At least now they have a short description for the items on the order page. Hit "learn more" for an item and you get a pop-up with the exact same text. They did send me a useful PDF document so I'll cut them some slack until they get their new support site up.

Yeah, that. Just give me an option to compare the specs on the stupid things instead having to navigate around trying to find a specs comparison document.

You forgot, "Like us on Facebook." "Join our newsletter" "Sign up for our deals" "How can I help you?" "Do you want to chat now?" No GD it, I just want to find what I came here to read. :saywhat:

It's going to be interesting very soon. I read a recent tech article about Chrome discontinuing Flash support soon. Android already has on tablets and newer mobile versions of Android. This on top of Chrome passing IE/Edge. Adobe is finished. HTML5 will rule the roost, but UI designers will find a way to get more click-throughs and BS pages. Trust me, I worked with them and the product managers who create this crap. :irked:
