View Full Version : The BaT thread
Not the Batthread or a thread about bats but a thread about cars that appear on Bring a Trailer (http://bringatrailer.com).
Generally I can't stand white cars but this one...

Semi-related, sorta appropriate thread for this.
Posted today on another forum I frequent, car in question is a very nice '66 Mustang convertible, C-code cloned to a GT, pictured here:
http://forums.vintage-mustang.com/images/dto_garage/users/47678/5033.jpg
had someone show up with cash for the mustang this weekend
I've mentioned here before that I have a "for sale" sign in the mustang. It's not listed anyplace, but the sign is there.
So the family and I are out for dinner on Friday night and as we're leaving a nice young man (maybe 19 or 20) asks if that's our mustang in the parking lot. I tell him it is, he says it's beautiful and asks how much.
I tell him I'm asking 25. I get a text on Saturday asking if we're around on Sunday, he'd like to have his father come take a look at the car with him. I tell him yes, but it's suppose to rain, come early, the car hasn't been driven in the rain for 30 years.
8:00 Sunday morning they arrive, look at the car, ask some questions and we go for a quick ride. He asks if he and his father can talk for a minute, I tell them sure, just come in through the garage when they're done I'll be in the kitchen
Father says, I know you're asking 25, he has 23 in cash and loves the car, I talk to the wife (it's actually her car) and she says sell it.
He then hands me $2300......
I ask if he's going to get a loan for the rest, or if he'll be back later in the week and he's confused.
I explain that the car is $25,000 not $2500 and both he and the father are shocked...
How can a 50 year old car be that expensive? They were only like $3000 brand new.
I apologize for the confusion, they apologized for wasting my morning and we talked classic cars for a little while.
Off they went, looking for a $2500 car

The part I love is the fact that they tried to chisel it down from $2500.
For context- my brother bought a very similar car, a 1964.5 convertible with a 260 2v and auto not nearly as nice as this one (jacked up with 12" shackle extenders in the back, interior vinyl faded to at least ten distinctly different shades of fleshtone ala Frankenstein, miles of 1970s vintage white pinstriping tracing every body contour over faded flat orange paint, you get the idea). He got an absolutely amazing deal on it, paid $3500 cash, probably a good third less than similar cars were selling for at the time. That was in 1985.
You can get that for me for Christmas this year!
You're going to need to stop and pick up some Lotto tickets.

Slightly better condition than our '87 but I hated what they did to them in '88. The bi-plane spoiler was everything. Also, the switch to silver trim in the cladding, pin stripes, and a more formal seemed like an attempt to Lincolnize it. Later that year they replaced the blocky wheels (which I loved) with a spoked wheel that looked stolen from a Mustang II and started painting the body cladding.

If your Fusion could fit in a phone booth that's what would come out.

Been years since I've seen a Merkur on the road. Had forgotten about those.

Don't 'dis the Fusion. It's a good ride.
re: the Merk...I wanted one badly, but being a poor college student, I had to go with a used Rabbit. :( Haven't seen one on the road in 20 odd years.

A wanted a Merkur in the worst way back in the day. It's been on my short list more than once during used car searches over the years, but a reasonably straight one never crossed my path. Knew a guy that swapped the turbo 4 for a first gen Yamaha SHO engine, said it was a surprisingly easy job. I would love to build one of those, my favorite late '80s vintage Ford engine and chassis in one place...

Supposedly both real GT350s. Methinks #11 came in a bit too hot.

My other choice was a Jedda (couldn't afford that at $2K)...after I bought a 'slightly' used 260Z. With rotting floor boards. It lasted 6 mos. :\

Ugh. Makes those photos make me queasy.
Here's a more recent bit of Ford racing history.

An Ebay auction for this was linked on BaT and the crowd there wasn't particularly moved by it. "Stick a V8 in there and it would be a good vintage racer." and the like. http://bringatrailer.com/2016/06/25/one-of-two-cosworth-bda-racers-1980-ford-mustangmclaren-m-81
To me this was an important piece of Ford racing and performance history. This was the car that started Ford's journey back to being a respectable racing and performance brand after almost a decade of absence. Fords were rare in U.S. racing back then and almost non-existent in road racing.
They ran it at Daytona and Sebring as a toe in the water to understand what it would take to get back in. It was never expected to be competitive. They ran it on street tires as a Firestone promo and the fact that it didn't conform to GTO or GTU rules meant that it would run in GTX against Porsche 935s and the like. But it was the start of what ultimately lead to SVO, SVT, and the GTO, TransAm and GTP programs of the '80s and '90s.
nrc's new ride....
