View Full Version : Jeep kills Chekov
Anton Yelchin, Chekov in the Star Trek movie reboot, was killed when his Jeep rolled back and pinned him against a stone pillar. Evidently this model has an epically stupid "monostable shifter" that returns to center and makes it hard to tell when you're in Park and not reverse. They've been recalled but it's unknown whether his was included.

And it makes it even harder to tell what gear it's in if you don't know what you're doing or pay attention to the indicator on the gearshift or the big one on the dashboard. I'm sure lawyers are lining up from here to Timbuktu to jump on this now that someone famous is dead enough for the media to call attention to this non-issue.

Pretty tragic and horrifying.
On the Jeep topic they changed the design back to a more traditional gear shift the next model year.

120 accidents, 30 injuries, and now 1 death. Hard to call it a non-issue.
It's an odd design, shoving the shifter forward gives back no feel as to whether or not you're in Park.
Those shifters are nutty. One reason I dislike driving the 'rents Prius. It's difficult to tell what gear/drive mode you are in...not to mention whether the car is even on since there is simply no sound. :saywhat:

I had this as a rental last winter. I do recall the shifting design being terrible. I selected the wrong gear a couple times and I only drove it for two days.

My friend, who leased one of these for a year and had the dash fail two or three times, he would say you need the indicator!

That's a jeep. Where the heck are the low range gears?
BMW has been using something really similar for a while now. One difference though is a dedicated button to put the transmission into park. Took a little getting used to on the first X5 it came on.

Just the emphasis of it on he video like that's the de facto indication of where it is at. It kind of implies the other indicator is not correct. I suspect the same people who keep trying to make our web surfing experience better think they can do the same for everything. Some, and I mean some, things are better the way they are/were.

I recently watched a talk of his about design. It really fits in to this discussion. First for the talk of self-driving cars, and then for his explanation that design is about the arrows between states. (In this case, how do you move between drive and park)

Hubby has one of those. I hate it.
Thats why my GTI has a manual transmission.

Many professional reviewers still hate it. Current version is OK I guess. For a while I had a 135 and a Q5. Going back and forth between the two systems was a pain.

BMW's idrive is horrible. I get to drive a lot different cars, none of the other single know type of multi media control systems is a difficult to use as BMW's
