View Full Version : GPS for My Vehicle
I am looking to purchase a portable GPS unit for my vehicle. I know practically nothing about them. I wouldn't be using it all the time; just once in a while. I'm not looking for state of the art; just something that is reasonably priced and works well.
Any suggestions on brands or specific models to look for?
Thanks in advance.
Ted
I used one of these for years before I gave it to a friend:

Now I just use my Android phone with Google Maps that does traffic as well as nav.
I'm very partial to Garmin. Anything with lifetime maps is probably sufficient for your use. Maybe the Garmin nüvi 55LM.
As partial as I am to Garmin, Google maps is getting pretty good. The gotcha has always cell coverage but now that you can download maps to your phone I will probably try that before investing in another stand alone GPS.

I debated long and hard on Garmin vs. TomTom, but Tom was cheaper. Worked well for several years until I got smartphone. Google Now + Google Maps shows traffic patterns, which is priceless with the construction in NW Cbus. :saywhat: 33 + 23 + Riverside Drive roundabout == :irked:
I was always happy with Garmin. No idea on current models as I buy my vehicles with nav these days. I do still use a Garmin handheld for hiking and it just works.

Many of these have gone away with the advent of smartphones and newer cars.
Garmin Nuvi.

EDIT: My Fusion has GPS, but I rarely use it. I just put the address in Google Calendar, and Google Now/Maps does the heavy lifting via my Android. One benefit of the Tom-Tom was having John Cleese giving directions. :gomer: ;)
I know a few people who use a phone app called Waze, they say it's great.

Yup. I have on my phone as well. It's pretty good, but with Google Now, Google Maps stuff is just seamless. #apppackrat ;)

uses a lot of juice, but otherwise it's pretty good

Just got home from a west coast road trip and Waze served me very well. My son backseat drove with Google Maps and there were some minor disagreements.
Waze is nice as the "social update" side oor whatever they call it. Users enter speed traps, disable cars, work zones, objects on road, etc. More than once, the object on road helped avoid serious debris on the road. And the police trap thing too.

Should have added this too - I wouldn't use it unless I have it plugged into the car.

yep
Sygic is another app I've 'played with', but haven't used it for any roadies yet.
