A couple of funny things on the obits here in the USA.
The Twitter feed of the guy who runs a left leaning news site, Talking Points Memo, somewhere around midnight to 2am, had him complaining that the AP (who they run on some national stories) did not apparently have a canned Obit to send to him (which is flat out journalistic malpractice).
I saw another Tweet from someone at the LA Times who pointed out that of the 4 by-lines for the 3 canned obits from the NYT, WaPo and LAT only one still worked for the paper that ran the Obit and one predeceased Castro.
On a funnier note, saw a tweet from a national defense journalist who pointed out that he had been the last living dictator who had lived through a Knicks championship (the qualification excluded QEII).

Whatever abuses (and there were plenty) that could be laid at Castro's feet, the fact remains that he came to us first, and that the Soviets were his second choice. While the reality is that no U.S. administration would ever condone the redistribution of Cuban land that Castro insisted on (and might even have arguably been necessary), one can't help but wonder what different shape Cuba's history might have taken if we'd said yes.

I thought we did....helping him overthrow Batista. He switched sides. Perhaps we could have fed his addiction with $$$$, but he was power hungry. Period.

That same thing applies to Vietnam

Yes and no. We inherited Vietnam from what the French started. Just carried over the 'Korean Conflict' started by Truman and then Ike. What's interesting is that peeps are so enamored by 'Camelot' that they don't get the policies that were in place at the time for Vietnam and Cuba. Castro was for all intents and purposes a Benedict Arnold. He played the US. Period. Sad, because he could have built a vacation haven that would have benefited the masses instead of just his arse. :\

Where are you getting that the US helped Castro overthrow Batista? It's certainly not in that George Will article. Given how much was nationalized, it seems unlikely to me. As the article did say, he had studied here so he came here after he took power. He was completely rebuffed. Being a megalomaniac, he was pizzed. Being smarter than he looked, he knew he needed money pronto. Where could he leverage money and political support? The other super power.
Just to be clear, he was lower than pond scum to me because he sacrificed his people for his "ideals." I put that in quotes because you didn't see him living in squalor and starving the way the Cuban people did under his dictatorship. It wasn't until my fourth trip to the island that I realized why the Cuban people revered him even though he was responsible for their misery. Raul was always the enforcer. The people could therefore hate him and not the brother who finally and at last gave them a government of Cubans, not outsiders.
An appropriate ending. Soldiers have to push Fidel's broken down funeral vehicle.
